WHAT TO EXPECT AT STM

WelcomingOur parishioners love meeting

new people and sharing their lives with others. You’ll also be greeted by some of the most welcoming

people you’ve ever met at a Church - and we’re not just talking about the

Hospitality Team.

Family-focusedIf you have children, they are

ALWAYS welcome to celebrate Mass with the community! In fact, our Church was purposefully built without a cry room because we want children at Mass. We also have a special family bathroom

with child-sized “facilities.”

Dynamic WorshipThroughout the Mass, you’ll be

encouraged and invigorated by the community’s full, conscious, and active participation in the Liturgy. Our community loves to SING!

The Word of God is proclaimed in a dynamic fashion. The homilies

are geared towards loving people where they are - and challenging them to become better Christians.

A CHURCH UNLIKE ANY OTHERThere’s so much more to talk about! Our Parish is a wonderful, dynamic

community and we welcome you to celebrate liturgy with us

this weekend!

It doesn’t matter if this is your first time, 50th time, or first time in 50

years - know that you always have a place to worship, and a community

to belong to at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

"An earthquake" in the Church's attitude towards gays. (Reuters) - In a dramatic shift in tone, a Vatican document said on Mon-day that homosexuals had “gifts and qualities to offer” and asked if Ca-tholicism could accept gays and recognize positive aspects of same-sex couples. The document, prepared after a week of discussions at an assembly of 200 bishops on the family, said the Church should challenge itself to find “a fraternal space” for homosexuals without compromising Catholic doctrine on family and matrimony. While the text did not signal any change in the Church’s condemnation of homosexual acts or gay marriage, it used less judgmental and more compassionate language than that seen in Vatican statements prior to the 2013 election of Pope Francis. STEWARDSHIP

Saint Luke the Evangelist: A Stewardship Saint, His feast day is October 18

Saint Luke was a physician from the Greek city of Antioch, the great commercial center whose ruins lie near the modern city of Antakya, Turkey.

He is considered the author of both The Gospel According to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which originally formed a single literary work, referred to as Luke-Acts. It is believed to be written in the city of Achaea for a relatively affluent Greek Christian community.

Luke emphasized the love and compassion of Jesus Christ and his concern for the poor. Parables such as the Prodigal Son, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Good Samaritan and the Rich Fool, are unique to Luke’s writings.

Women were featured more prominently in Luke’s portrayal of Jesus’ life than in any other. He dedicated the first two chapters of the Gospel to Mary in the nativity narrative, and other women included Elizabeth, Mary Magdalene, the widow of Nain, the women of Jerusalem and others. He also places great emphasis on the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church and the importance of being a good steward of one’s prayer life.

Luke didn’t limit his writings on stewardship to prayer. He offers a sophisticated theology of stewardship and discipleship in his Gospel as they relate to wealth and sharing one’s possessions. His nterest in stewardship and his treatment of “almsgiving” was radical, with no parallel in the society of the time. Luke urged wealthy Christians in his community to be mindful of their stewardship responsibilities as it pertained to their spiritual lives, their community, and to the poor.

According to tradition, Saint Luke the Evangelist lived until he was 84 years old and died in Beotia, Greece. He is the patron saint of physicians, surgeons, students, artists and butchers. -theCatholicsteward.com

Discipling mini-disciples - #stewardshipinactionBelinda and her daughter Nicole have been assisting our Mini-Disciples program for over a year and this year have stepped up to scheduling and coordinating volunteers and the curriculum.

Our mini-disciples program is a part of our mission to connect people to Jesus through faith, love & ministry.

As a ministry to children, it gives families a chance to allow their children to spend time in an age-appropriate worship environment while they attend Mass.

The ultimate goal is for the whole family to worship together, however we understand that sometimes families aren’t able to be at an entire liturgy together.

Belinda and Nicole started serving simply because they love children, and now they continue to inspire and encourage others to work with our young children too.

Get involved! If you have a heart for spending time with children, and you’re 13 or older, please contact Tom Lelyo at 941-374-6884

Help needed! - Don’t let our Children’s Ministry be cancelled in November! For the past 2 months, our amazing volunteers: Courtney, Belinda, Louise, Nicole, and Jill have led our Children’s Ministry but in November the schedule has a few gaps. We need more adult volunteers to spend time with children during the 11:30AM Mass. If available, contact Tom at 941-374-6884

Are you afraid of THE DARK? - Youth Ministry to host Haunted House Thursday October 30th

A terrible darkness has enveloped the STM campus and unsuspecting guests must help the campus missionary find his lost cross that has the power to turn the darkness into light! The problem is, the campus has already been decorated like a haunted house so guests must travel through the Spirit Center that has been “turned” in order to look for the missing cross.

Join us on Thursday, October 30th for an interactive haunted

house for grades 6 and above from 6:30pm-8pm

Get involved! We are in need of a few supplies to help make this Haunted House more fun and imaginative! If you can assist with a variety of items (paint, cardboard, styrofoam, bed sheets, extra Halloween decorations, etc) please contact Tom Lelyo at 941-374-6884 or [email protected]
