Halakhic Corner Q: What is the proper conduct during the

chazzan’s repetition of the Amidah?

A: During the repetition of the Amidah, everyone must remain silent and pay attention to the words of the Shaliach Tzibbur. It is preferable for one to stand in one place, though if not able to, he or she may sit. It is still, however, preferable to stand from the beginning of the repetition through Kedushah. During Kedushah one must stand still, with their feet together, as is done during Amidah. Additionally, when the Shaliach Ttzibbur comes to Modim (the time at which the Tzibbur must bow together with the Chazzan), one who is sitting, should stand (if possible) in order to bow from a standing position. (Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim 65:2 and Mishna Brurah 65:9).

Question For the Week - From Our Semichat Chaver Program

taught by Rabbi Dr. Zev Wiener

For more about our Semichat Chaver Program, view the flyer posted on our website, www.yicc.org

Q Is the obligation of Lechem Mishneh -- reciting Hamotzi on two loaves of

Challah on Shabbat -- a Torah obligation or a Rabbinic obligation? A While everyone agrees that men and women are obligated in Lechem Mishneh

on Shabbos (at least at the Friday night and Shabbat day meals), there is a major dispute as to whether this obligation stems from the Torah or from the Rabbis. The Aruch HaShulchan and the Turei Zahv (Taz) opine that Lechem Mishneh is a Biblical obligation, derived from the Torah's description of the double portion of Manna that fell every Friday in honor of Shabbat. Others, including the Magen Avraham and Pri Megadim, assume that the Torah never obligated us to eat Lechem Mishneh, and that the account of the double portion of Manna that fell on Friday is descriptive, not prescriptive. Rather, the obligation originated later on from the Rabbis, in commemoration of the Manna that fell. A practical difference between these two opinions would be how to handle a case of uncertainty (for example, one cannot recall if he or she washed on one or two loaves). If the Mitzvah is Biblical, one would have to wash and eat again (after Bentching, and waiting to create an interruption before the next blessing). If the Mitzvah is Rabbinic, one would have the right to rule leniently.
