An inevitable conflict exists between the church and today’s culture. The symptoms of the conflict are seen in debates over human sexuality, marriage, abortion, and all kinds of contemporary legal and political issues. At the core of the conflict, however, is a world view issue that has to do with how we determine what is right and wrong, what is true, what is moral. Our culture’s primary approach is existential, i.e. one’s personal experience.
For the church, for those who seek to follow Christ, and specifically for those who are United Methodist Christians, God’s Word is the primary source for truth. God’s Word is our first and final authority in matters of faith and practice, in matters of theology and morality.
Our Book of Discipline says the following in Paragraph 104, Section 4:
United Methodists share with other Christians the conviction that Scripture is the primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine. Through Scripture the living Christ meets us in the experience of redeeming grace. We are convinced that Jesus Christ is the living Word of God in our midst whom we trust in life and death. The biblical authors, illumined by the Holy Spirit, bear witness that in Christ the world is reconciled to God. The Bible bears authentic testimony to God’s self-disclosure in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as in God’s work of creation, in the pilgrimage of Israel, and in the Holy Spirit’s ongoing activity in human history…
Our standards affirm the Bible as the source of all that is “necessary” and
“sufficient” unto salvation (Articles of Religion) and “is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice” (Confession of Faith).
Because our church and our culture start from different places, it is almost inevitable that we will reach different conclusions on matters vital to the day-to-day living out of our faith. We can’t force our culture to live according to our values, but we can be a light and godly example that points people to Christ. We can seek to be a godly influence that works for godly purposes in the public arenas of life. Whether our culture believes it or not, we believe that the values found in Scripture will actually work for the good of all humanity. A few such values are the sanctity of life, the love of all persons, the commitment to care for those in need, the belief that all persons need a relationship with God.
So this week, a good friend and prospective member of our church visited with me about what our church believes about Scripture. He and I discussed a document on our umc.org website that talked about the Bible being filled with “legends,” about the Bible being “proven by experience,” about the Bible “becoming” sacred. We were left with the clear impression that the authority of scripture is conditional rather than final.
This nuanced approach toward scripture found in many corners of Methodism nowadays is troubling at best and dangerous at worst. Adam Hamilton, pastor of the largest Methodist Church in the United States, has come up with the “Three Bucket” plan for interpreting scripture. His

three buckets are:
Bucket #1--Scriptures that express God’s heart, character and timeless will for human beings.
Bucket #2--Scriptures that expressed God’s will in a particular time, but are no longer binding.
Bucket #3--Scriptures that never fully expressed the heart, character or will of God.
Guess who gets to decide what goes in these 3 buckets? Adam does! We do! This approach to scripture weds us to the values of our culture where personal experience reigns supreme over Biblical authority. God
help Adam, God help us. For a clear rebuttal of Hamilton’s approach just google an article by Bill Arnold entitled “Adam Hamilton’s Buckets Don’t Hold Water.”
I am so worried that many of us will read this article and say, “Man, that was boring.” or “Kind of interesting, but what does that have to do with me?” How we view God’s Word, how we approach God’s Word, how we seek to apply God’s Word in our own lives will ultimately determine the direction of our lives and the future of our church. May the primacy of scripture stay primary in us!

A note from Pastor MattIn recent political news, Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee stated that President
Obama, “pretends to be” a Christian. He went on to state that he is concerned about anyone’s “authenticity of their faith.” As a Christian, these statements have nothing to do with my political convictions. Certainly, I desire that a qualified Christian lead our country, but more importantly I want Christians to qualify the faith they proclaim.
The definition of qualify is to “become officially recognized as a practitioner.” James 2:14 asks us what good it is to have faith if we do not show our faith through our daily living. In Philippians 2:12-18 the Apostle Paul tells us that we are to live each day in a way that shows we really live as we believe. Our faith is not just reciting a prayer and do nothing else. Our faith is practicing the power and presence that the prayer brought into our lives through a daily journey as Christ draws us closer to himself.
By the way, there are no prerequisites to qualify our faith as followers of Jesus Christ. All you have to do to qualify your faith is to practice your faith. In October we are going to talk about practicing our faith through our Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness. We recite these words each time someone joins the membership of our church, but do we actually practice what we preach?
I am asking that each person begin asking the Lord to reveal which area of your life where you need to grow. Do you need to begin praying in a particular way? How can you be more present in our faith community? In what way do you need to share your gifts? Maybe you have been serving for years, but the Lord wants you to serve in a new way. How about the witness of your life: do people know you’re a Christian by how you live?
Mike Huckabee is correct that we do not need to be pretenders, but rather authentic followers of Jesus Christ. The world will know we follow Jesus by our love towards each other. John 13:35
They will know us by our....
On October 10th, St. Luke’s is partnering with the American Red Cross to install between 600 and 1,000 smoke alarms in the Lubbock community. The American Red Cross has undertaken the goal of reducing fire death and injury across the country in the next two years. We are hoping to make a large impact here in Lubbock quicker than that.
Here are two ways you can be a part of this effort:1. If you know of a family that needs a smoke detector, please send their
contact information to [email protected]. A smoke will be delivered and installed for them by appointment on Oct. 10.
2. If you would like to be a part of a group going door-to-door to offer this service, contact John Cummings at the Red Cross, 765-8534. Please respond by noon on Monday, October 5th.

Music MinistryAs we begin to enjoy the
beautiful fall weather of the South Plains, remember that part of our enjoyment in this life comes from serving God and serving the church, and we do this by getting “plugged into” the church community. The Music Ministry has several music ensembles and service teams that are a great place to serve. Here is a brief description of each:
• Adult Choir- sings weekly during worship/ need to be able to carry a tune/ rehearse Wednesdays
• Orchestra- plays monthly during worship/ need to read music & have instrument/ rehearse Wednesdays
• Bellchoir- plays about 3 times a semester/ need to read music/ rehearse Monday evenings
• Praise Band- plays weekly during 10:45 service/ sing or play an instrument/ rehearse Saturday mornings
• Sound Crew- run the sound board once a month/ we will train you
• Media Crew- run the slides during worship once a month/ we will train you
• Librarian- assist with organizing music and documents in the music ministry/ flexible schedule
An area we especially need people is the Adult Choir.
Our numbers are low right now, and in order to offer a great program for Christmas, we need people to sing in choir. Why not consider being a Seasonal Singer? This is great way to help out and to experience the wonderful music of Christmas. You just need to be able to carry a tune; you don’t have to read music. There are several people in each section that read music and will help you learn your part. And, I’ve carefully selected music that will be a pleasure to sing but won’t be difficult to learn. A Seasonal Singer will just attend the first part of our weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings. Here is what the rehearsals will look like:
-7:00 until 7:45- Christmas Music for Regular Choir and Seasonal Singers
-7:45 until 8:30- Regular Choir rehearsal
You participation as a Seasonal Singer will culminate in the performance of Carols and Candles on Sunday evening, December 6th. You’ll also be invited to offer some of the Christmas anthems on Sunday morning, if you like. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a Seasonal Singer. The choir, the congregation and the visitors who attend Carols and Candles will really appreciate
your participation. Remember, you’ll have help learning the music. And, you won’t have to worry about your voice sticking out- there are enough people for a good choral blend. But, we still need more people to generate a strong choral presence. If you have any questions, please contact me.

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched- this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we
proclaim to you eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with
the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete” 1 John 1:1-4
We had a very exciting summer with missions here at St. Luke’s, with 3 international trips, 2 youth mission trips/projects, and our 2nd annual Missionary Conference. It was so encouraging to see members of our congregation really come alive with the love of God and His purposes for them. In this passage of 1 John, we see this intimate connection between experiencing Christ, proclaiming/testifying about Christ (missions), fellowshipping with each other, fellowshipping with God, and complete joy. I think many of our mission trip participants from this summer will testify how this passage rang true for them as they served the Lord. Even though we go and serve and give in Jesus’ name, it is our own relationship with the LORD that begins to overflow while in service to Him. Paul says to King Agrippa in Acts 26 “I wish before God that… not only you, but all who listen to me today might become as I am.” May we also share in this same heart, that we will seek to freely share with others the abundant blessings God has given us through His Son!
Upcoming Missions Events:
Great Commission Fellowship (GCF)- We have begun our second semester of GCF, a ministry to reach international students with the Gospel. We meet at 5pm at Central Campus on Thursday evenings. If you’re interested in helping, we can always use discipleship leaders, cook teams, and more Christian participants. Contact Robby or Andy Hurst for details.
Juarez Mission Trip- We are planning to return to Juarez, Mexico this December during Winter Break to build a family a house in celebration of Jesus’s birth! If you’re even slightly intrigued, contact Robby (806-787-5941) for more information.
Getting the Word Out- While most of the congregation knew of the summer mission trips, many people have not received the opportunity to hear specifically what the LORD did through those trips. If you or your small group/ Sunday School class would be interested in hearing testimony from Belize, Mexico, Israel, Dallas (high schoolers), or Romania (Frank and Teri Anderson), please contact Robby or someone you know from those trips to get that set up.
God bless you, St. Luke’s!Robby Wiginton, Missions Intern

Good NewsFor 18 years, children have played on the existing play structurea at St. Luke’s Central.
Bad NewsThe integrity of the existing play structure (installed 1998) has been compromised and
the 10 year old turf has lost its cushioning qualities creating safety concerns.
Good NewsWith the approval of the Preschool/PDO/Afterschool Care Committee,
Preschool and PDO have selected a new play structure (designed for 2-12 year olds)and turf with plans to have them installed this fall.
Bad NewsIt is a very expensive venture.
Good NewsYou can help! Please consider donating towards the new Central Playground that will be
enjoyed by Preschool, PDO and all children who attend St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Contact PDO at 806-797-8353 or Preschool at 806-797-4396.

The Lives of Peter, Barnabas and Paul
This masters group, led by Henry Salley, Is based on the Life of Paul and the spread of early Christianity. God is still using the New Testament to inspire more people in the world than follow the teachings of Mohammad, the Buddha, and Confucius combined.

Dear St. Luke’s Family,
I hope you are enjoying the beginning of fall and all that comes with it. This month at St. Luke’s we are featuring a series entitled, “We Are Family!” This series will be an in depth and experiential study about what it means to be a part of God’s family and specifically what it means to be a part of our “Christ-centered family of grace” here at St. Luke’s.
During the month of October, we are asking you to attend worship all four Sundays, to get connected to a Sunday School class or Grace group, to pray about how God is calling you to make a difference for Him, and to seek God’s guidance as to how you are to give and invest in God’s work at St. Luke’s in 2016.
When folks join St. Luke’s we ask them to make two primary commitments. First, we ask them to profess their faith in Christ. Second, we ask them to become a vital part of the St. Luke’s family by supporting St. Luke’s with their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.
Prayers---these are our personal spiritual disciplines. This commitment is all about us growing in our relationship with Christ and praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Presence---this is our commitment to be physically present with one another in weekly worship of Jesus and in weekly gatherings of authentic Christ-centered community. Influence requires intimacy and intimacy requires presence.
Gifts---this is our commitment to share with His family what God has given us. Our spiritual gifts and our financial gifts come straight from Him, and we give to Jesus through the investments we make in what God is doing in and through St. Luke’s.
Service---this is our commitment to make a difference for Christ in this world. St. Luke’s may have 3 pastors, but we have 1200 ministers. All of us are called to serve and make a difference for Jesus.
Witness---this is our commitment to share our story with others. We are not called to be expert theologians, just honest witnesses of what God has done in our lives. As we share Christ’s love and invite others to be a part of His family, God will use us as agents of His grace in our hurting and broken world.
“We Are Family” was a song by Sister Sledge way back in 1979, but it has been the cry of the church since the Day of Pentecost almost 2000 years ago. Nowadays, there is much pressure from without and within upon the family of Jesus. Our values and beliefs are being ridiculed from the outside. On the inside our relationships with one another are often more conformed to the world than they are to Christ. I pray this October that we will be grow closer to Jesus and to one another.
E. Stanley Jones had it right: “If I belong to Jesus and you belong to Jesus, then we belong to each other!”
May the family of Jesus at St. Luke’s so love Him and so love each other that the world takes note that we truly are a “Christ-centered family of grace!”
Your brothers,
Andy Hurst & Matt Wolfington
