Salvage in Oregon

• Current rules do not allowindividuals to salvage big game

• OAR 635-065-0765 prohibits possession of big game animals found or killed for human reasons

• OAR 635-002-0005 directs the disposal of edible wildlife

• ORS 619.095 requires game meat inspection if donated to charitable organization

Permit Application Procedure

• On-line permit application Will be incorporated into the Electronic License System (ELS) Must be completed within 24 hours of possession

• Specifies information required Contact information Location and time of salvage Species and sex of animal Identity of driver if known

• Acknowledgement that the state is not liable

Permit Requirements• Salvage restricted to deer and elk

• Vehicle collision must be accidental

• Salvage of white-tailed deer prohibited in western Oregon except Douglas County Columbian white-tailed deer are federally ESA listed Douglas County population de-listed

• If the animal is crippled by the vehicle collision and then killed, only the driver can salvage the carcass Immediate notification required

• Salvage not authorized on Tribal reservation lands

Permit Conditions

• Entire head must be surrendered within five business days Meets requirement that all antlers be surrendered Supports Chronic Wasting Disease surveillance efforts

• Entire carcass including entrails must be removed from the road and road right of way

• No portion of salvaged animal may be sold

• Transfer of parts to another person requires written record
