The audience at David Gogo’s show Oct. 13 in Prince George may be in for a treat.

“Oct. 13 may be a little early,” the Cana-dian blues artist says, “but the stores have already got their Christmas stuff up.”

Yes, Gogo is going to release a Christ-mas blues album, probably in about a month, he figures.

“I wasn’t jumping up and down origi-nally when we came up with the idea for a Christmas album. Then I started going back through the blues from the 40s, 50s and 60s, and there was a lot of cool stuff.”

So he took a look at his timetable, which showed Soul Bender, his last album, had been released over a year ago, and his next album won’t be out until next summer, so there was a gap.

So, no promises, but the audience at the Kinsmen Community Complex on Oct. 13 may hear some Yuletide blues by a West-ern Canadian Music Award winner.

Gogo’s Soul Bender won the award for Blues Recording of the Year at the awards, held recently in Regina.

“It’s been a busy month and a half or so,” he says. “I’ve been doing some tour-ing, the awards show, just keeping busy.”

Gogo says the blues have always been where his musical head was at.

“It’s weird, but I always have been a blues fan. My dad had some blues albums that I like to listen to, but then I got into Elvis and other bands in the 1960s.”

Unlike a lot of young listeners, though, Gogo looked at who was writing the music.

“I kept seeing these songwriting cred-its for peoples named Muddy Waters or Howlin’ Wolf, so I started to find out more about them.”

Suddenly he was there. Standing on the CN Centre stage. John Fogerty

with his signature smile and trademark plaid flannel shirt. Larger than life – especially if you’re watching the giant video monitors. His presence made me giddy. I noticed he had the same effect on fans of all ages seated all around me.

Before the night was over, Fogerty and his five-piece band had put on a two-hour show showing off stellar musicianship, lush lighting, sweet video clips and special effects suited to each song.

Here’s a guy in his late 60s whose music appeals not just to people my age who loved him decades ago as lead songwriter, lead guitarist and vocalist with Creedence Clearwater – but who love him now, as recording artist and rocker with a reason to return.

His new material is packaged into Fogerty’s latest album Wrote a Song for Everyone (he did

too, for all of us) and is the driving force behind this tour. Fogerty was fabulous.

How many hits? I lost count ‘cause they just kept on coming.

Just ask the 5,000 audience members – a sold-out crowd – who came out to see him. The songs, many made famous by his former band and other artists, a few kept for himself for his solo career, were duly delivered up like the contents of a treasure chest, one gem at a time.

The crowd went wild – just about to lose their minds – when the band performed what has to be THE longest ever cover of Marvin Gaye’s hit I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Sooooo good. Dramatic red lights. My personal picks: Up Around the Bend (lyrics by Fogerty), CCR’s hit song Long As I Can See the Light – for this one the stage had light cones that grew bigger like the flame of a giant candle.

There was a great rendition of Who’ll Stop the Rain and Run Through the Jungle with Fogerty on harmonica. I Ain’t Never heard it done so well. Solid song set. Forgive me if I can’t rattle

off all the tune titles due to space restraints – besides, I think Fogerty put a spell on me.

But I learned a lot of things about Fogerty from the bio/video that ran before the show – like how he bought his first guitar at age eight and now owns 300 guitars and travels with about 25.

I think we saw him play all 25... And we were introduced to the one thing that brought Fogerty out of the fog after legal battles and long hiatus had taken there toll.

The joy of his life. He asked us, “Have you found love? I have found love... and her name is Julie. She’s sittin’ right over there.”

Luckiest Man Alive? You bet. And we were a lucky audience who got to see this living legend perform - still at the top of his game.

Getting the story behind the song

When April Wine takes the stage at the CN Centre on Oct. 17 for Rocktoberfest, Brian Greenway knows what songs they’ll be playing.

He’s just not sure how long the show is going to last.

“It can be anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours,” says the guitarist for the leg-endary Canadian rockers. “A lot depends on how talkative Myles (Goodwyn) is feeling that night.”

Greenway says Goodwyn, depending on the mood he’s in, has been known to spin some great stories about songs the group is playing.

“It’s never boring,” he says, when asked if he sometimes feels inclined to take a nap while Goodwyn is talking. “It’s not scripted, so there’s always something new.”

The Prince George date is one of the first on the band’s current tour, which starts Oct. 11 in Vancouver.

“We’ll get out there a cou-ple of days earlier,’ Greenway said. “We’re getting older now, and it’s nice to have a day or so to relax and adjust to the time change.”

In the late 1980s, April Wine split up for a few years before reforming in 1992. Goodwyn and Greenway both released solo projects during that time, but don’t expect to hear any of those songs at CN Centre.

“We don’t do any of the solo stuff. It’s all April Wine, from the big albums – First Glance, Harder... Faster, and The Nature of the Beast – and we do some older stuff too.”

For Greenway, like so many growing up in the 1960s, the Beatles turned him on to music – and to guitars.

“I realized guitar was where

it was when the Beatles were around. I remember going to a summer camp in 1965 and one of the instructors had a guitar. I didn’t know how to play it, but I would just sit there and pluck the strings. That’s how I got started.”

Besides the Beatles, Green-way says his own musical tastes were solid musicians.

“I got into Eric Clapton early, when he was still with John Mayall and the Blues-breakers. I loved early Procol Harum, just the orchestral sound of their songs. I was into Ritchie Blackmore and Jimi Hendrix.”

He remembers one concert experience clearly.

“I was sitting centre stage, four rows back for a Hen-drix show. It just sounded so good.”

April Wine plays about 60 s h o w s a year now, but

Greenway cautions you have to “multiply that be about three to account for travel and everything.” Those shows are arena shows (like CN Centre) or outdoor festivals. Playing those venues has some defi-nite advantages, he says.

“We don’t do bars any-more. I still remember one drunk guy who kept asking us to play Brown-Eyed Girl. I don’t think he had the slight-est idea who we were.”

He pauses for a second.“Or maybe he just wanted

to hear what our version would sound like.”

Tickets for the Rockto-berfest show on Oct. 17 at CN Centre, featuring Myles Goodwyn and April Wine, are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations. This is a cabaret concert, limited to those 19 and over.

The Lord moves in mysterious ways. When Canadian blues icon Jim Byrnes called

Vancouver based gospel singer Marcus Mosely on the phone a few years ago to ask if he could round up a few friends to record some back up vocals for a new album, no one could have guessed what would happen next.

From the moment Mosely and his pals, Will Sanders and Ron Small stepped up to the micro-phone and began singing, they realized that they had something very special going on. When Byrnes dubbed the trio The Sojourners the name stuck and – as they say – the rest is history.

You can catch up on that history when the Sojourners perform at the Prince George Play-house on Oct. 14.

Formative years spent singing in the churches of Mosely, Small and Sanders’, hometowns – Ralls, Texas, Chicago, Illinois and Alexandria, Louisiana respectively – give The Sojourners’

sound an authentic edge that only comes with experience. This is real gospel - blessed with a soul that can’t be faked.

While it wouldn’t exactly be right to call The Sojourners a new act – given that each member of the group has been in the music business for around 50 years - the sound, energy and com-mitment they conjure any time they get together would be the envy of singers half their ages.

Hot on the tail of their session with Byrnes, the Sojourners went into the studio with roots music whiz Steve Dawson to record Hold On, their first solo album in 2007. Two years later they returned to record a second CD simply entitled The Sojourners.

No longer the new kids on the block, the trio had definite ideas of how they wanted their follow up record to sound, and one listen through the songs they’ve captured here shows that they’ve suc-ceeded beyond their wildest expectations.

This is not music that strives to be polite. In The Sojourners’ universe, echoes of doo wop, R&B, country and blues weave together to create a unique sound that has all but vanished from today’s world.

This is gospel music that can take a punch and remain standing. Singing praise music with their own special ‘stank’, the Vancouver based Sojourners sound just as at home in a road house bar as they do in a revival tent.

Highlights of the group’s time together include a definitive show with the Dixie Hummingbirds, opening spots with Jim Byrnes at the Vancouver Jazz Festival for both Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama and featured stages at most of the

major Canadian folk and roots festivals.

The newest addition to the ensemble is the talented young singer Khari McClelland.

The Sojourners are a rock solid unit and proof positive that faith can move moun-tains. But, don’t let that scare you away. Sinner or saved - wherever you are on your own personal journey, you should listen to The Sojourners. You’ll feel better for it.

The Sojourners play the Prince George Playhouse on Oct. 14, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Studio 2880.

Brett Zarowny needed one game to record his first West-ern Hockey League shutout.

The timing couldn’t have been much better as it came in the Prince George Cougars’ regular season opener, help-ing lead the team to a quick 2-0 start. A road doubleheader sweep Sept. 22 and 23 over the Everett Silvertips, 6-0 and 7-6 victories, gives the Cats momentum heading into the Sept. 26 home opener against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

“It’s very exciting, my first start. I was just surprised to get the start and obviously to get a shutout in it is some-thing I never even dreamed of, never even thought it’d be possible,” Zarowny said. “But it was a huge moment and very exciting, and I felt so blessed to be able to get a shutout, just even to get a win in my first game.”

After recording the shut-out, Zarowny got the nod to start again Sunday. Although he allowed more goals, the Cougars left Everett, Wash., with four points after a 7-6 shootout victory.

The 17-year-old rookie is trying to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Cougars, who didn’t have a clear-cut starter when

the season began. The team’s other goalie, 18-year-old sophomore Devon Fordyce, doesn’t carry a ton of WHL experience. He played in only 14 games last season, the back-up to overage starter Drew Owsley.

Although Fordyce didn’t hit the ice a ton in the 2011-12 campaign, his extra season hasn’t gone unnoticed by the rookie.

“It’s pretty competitive right now,” Zarowny said of the battle. “But off the ice, I think we’re really good friends and he’s got a year under him, so I’m not scared to ask him a question or any-thing. He’s wide open with everything, so it’s been really good so far.”

The goaltending partners weren’t strangers before the season started. Both Alberta products, Zarowny hails from Edson while Fordyce is a Cochrane product, they had crossed paths representing their home province.

At a Cougars’ press confer-ence before the home opener, head coach Dean Clark wouldn’t name a starter for the game. Recognizing the value of a healthy battle between their two goalies, he noted that they needed to get Devon Fordyce his first start of the season on the week-end.

“I wouldn’t say that we’re going to name (Zarowny) the starter. I think there’s a battle there,” he said. “I think Devon has played equally as well.”

Fordyce played both of the week-end games against Seattle.

Zarowny hopes to build off a posi-tive opening week-end. Playing in the WHL is a big step up from midget rep hockey. Last season, he suited up for the Leduc Oil Kings squad that finished fourth as hosts of the Telus Cup national midget hockey cham-pionship.

Before the starter was named for the home opener, Zarowny was excited about the possibility of skating between the pipes.

“There’s nothing like playing at home and playing in front of your hometown crowd with a lot of fans in the home opener of the year,” he said. “I think that’ll be huge for us, get the crowd on our side early, and I think this crowd

has a lot of potential for fans. I’ve heard about the past and all the fans they’ve had so I think if we start winning some games we’ll start that again.”

“It’s always an exciting time, every time you’re start-ing the season,” Clark said.

“Everybody has got opti-mism and everything else. We’re no different.”

Michelle Wright can’t wait to hit the road again.

“We just got back from Canadian Coun-try Music Week,” she says from her home in Nashville. “The laundry’s done, the dishes are done, and we’re getting ready for the tour.”

That tour, Songs From the Halls, starts Oct. 13 in Campbell River and hits Prince George on Oct. 19 for a show at the Play-house.

“We’ll leave here a couple of days early,” Wright says, “because it’s a long trip by bus. But it will be nice to get on the bus and relax.”

The new tour will require the band to learn some new, old songs, since Wright will be presenting a concert with two themes.

“It’s a whole new concept. I’ll do some of my own hits, about 10 or 12 that the people seem to enjoy, and I’ll do 10 or 12 by other artists. My thinking now is we’ll intersperse them: Do one of my old songs, then a cover tune.”

And where did she get the material from other artists? Well, the tour title is a clue.

“These are all artists who are in a musical hall of fame

of some kind,” Wright says. “I went to the listing for each hall, then started at ‘A’ and went through the names, looking for the artists who influenced me the most.”

As she went through the lists, she says, one thing stood out.

“What surprised me mare than anything wasn’t the music I responded to in terms of its influence, but what I didn’t respond to. There were bands I love, like ABBA, who didn’t influence my music at all.”

So that means no ABBA songs on the tour. Wright says there will be quite a variety, though.

“Some of the people I’m cov-ering shouldn’t be a surprise,

like Merle Haggard or Anne Murray. I’ll also be doing songs by Bonnie Raiit and U2.”

While it might sound easy to pick 10 or 12 songs from art-ists who influenced her career, Wright says there were other factors that came into play.

“I had to look at the tempos of the songs. If I already had five or six ballads, I knew I needed to find some up-tempo stuff to balance it.”

While digging through the halls of fame gave Wright a chance to look at great music of the past, she also had the chance a couple of years ago to revisit her own musical past.

“We remastered and re-released my first album, Do

Michelle Wright plays at the Prince George Playhouse October 19.

Right By Me, a couple of years ago. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed listening to those songs again.”

But just because she enjoyed them, doesn’t mean she would re-record them today.

“Musical taste change, and I think I’ve evolved with them. There are songs on that album that I wouldn’t do now, because I think I’ve moved to a different place with my music.”

The impetus for the Songs From the Halls tour came in 2011, when

Wright was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

“My first thought when they called me was, ‘Aren’t I a little young to be in the Hall of Fame? Can you call back in about 15 years?’

“But then I realized I’ve been making music for quite a while and had a pretty good career.”

Tickets for Michelle Wright’s Songs From the Halls tour stop at the Prince George Playhouse on Oct. 19 are now on sale.

Role players of the north will have a chance to put their skills to the test on Oct. 20 and 21.

Those are the dates for NPC-Con, the role-playing gaming convention for the north.

The event is set for Knox United Church, 1448 Fifth Ave., start-ing at 9 a.m. each day.

There will be table-top role playing, live action role playing and board games, and all skill levels are welcome, as are costumes.

There will be a wide variety of games available, with skilled gamemasters in charge of each one, but there will also be chances to sit down and play a quiet two-person game if that’s what you prefer.

It’s $15 a day or $20 for the weekend, and student discounts are

available. For more information on NPC-Con, visit

BIG NORTH B11 BIG NORTH FREE PRESS - OCTOBER 2012

DELYNDA [email protected]

A series of ads on the Prince George Kijiji site have drawn the ire of a number of locals who say they are offensive, however the woman posting them has no intention of stopping.

Michaela Loiselle admits the ads border on the absurd, however she maintains they are posted to raise awareness, and the reaction she’s getting from them proves they are work-ing.

Loiselle, an animal activist, said she became tired of the many sad stories she hears about pet owners moving, only to either give their animals away or abandon them.

“I see a lot of people coming in and out of the place I work with animals, and then they don’t have them anymore. One customer told me he moved into a new place and there was a dog already living there, abandoned by the former tenant. Basically I’m posting these ads to raise awareness that if you’re going to have an animal it’s just as much a commitment as if you’re going to have a child,” she said.

The ads are worded to sound like the ones she sees that say the pet owner is moving and needs someone to give Fluffy or Fido to.

She’ll say she’s the mom of two children, is moving, and can’t take them with her. Can someone provide a good home? The children might have a bit of a glitch. For instance, the young boy might still pee in the house, or the baby girl might have a bit of a nipping prob-lem.

“I’ve had responses from people who were highly offended,” she said.

Her ads generally only stay up for a few days before being flagged then removed.

However Loiselle has no intention of stop-ping. The activity is just one she’s taken on to defend the rights of animals. She also helps

friends run a home-based rescue centre.“Basically we rescue anything with

scales or tails,” she said, however their focus is on reptiles.

They also have a FaceBook page dedi-cated to helping people understand how to properly care for reptiles.

The rescue centre usually keeps the

animals until they are assessed and reha-bilitated, if necessary.

Then they follow up on placements because finding a good stable home for a pet is important, Loiselle added.

“Changing homes or being abandoned entirely is traumatic on a pet, she said. “If you are going to own one, research

the breed. Know there is not going to be a chance in the near future to get rid of them. People believe once a dog grows to decent size it should behave like a fully grown mature dog.”

Loiselle added that, if you read the ad right through, the point she is trying to make becomes obvious.

“HIV does not change who you are.”

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can

contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and

by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years

without you knowing and all the while you can be passing

it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+

do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be

responsible for 75 per cent of new infections.

Northern Health, in collaboration with its community

partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent

the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment,

and support services to British Columbians.

Educate yourself, your family and your friends

about HIV. Visit HIV101.ca today.Educate: The only way to know you are not positive is by

getting tested. Request an HIV test today.Test: Please share your new knowledge about HIV

with others, and please encourage everyone

to get an HIV test.
