Breakfast & FALL RallySaturday, 17 October 2015

9:00 a.m.The October Fun Run is going to be fun. Andrew is planning a FALL Rally and FALL, in all its permutations, will be the theme for the rally. Think FALL, the season of the year, things that FALL or have FALLEN, i.e. the Roman Empire, the stock market, waterFALLS. Let your imagination run wild, because Andrew’s certainly will, as he plans the questions for the rally.

We’re hoping the weather cooperates for a great day for a drive. The rally route is still under development but we’ll prob-ably sneak in some leaf-peeping in the hills, where the aspens will be changing

into their FALL finery. Keep your fingers crossed that we will see lots of gold sprinkled with other FALL colors of red

and orange. And that’s while we’re keeping our eyes peeled for the other signs of FALL along the way.

Please join us on Saturday, 17 October, 9:00 a.m., for breakfast at the Egg & I restau-

rant at Citadel Cross-ing. After breakfast at about 10:30 a.m., we will commence with the FALL Rally.

The route will include FALL scenery and will take about 3-4 hours, with the terminus at an appropriately-themed FALL restau-rant for lunch. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. The cost is $10 per car. Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson, (719) 635-7522, or [email protected].

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Is there a chink in the armor of the Mercedes AMG F1 team? At the most recent race in Sin-gapore, for the first time in a long time, there was not one Mercedes

on the pole; and in fact, the highest the two teammates could qualify was 5th and 6th place. Hints of this outcome could be seen in the pre-race practice sessions. Neither Mercedes car posted the fastest time in any of the sessions, which is un-usual. Team Mercedes AMG has been so dominant these last two seasons that the norm has been: Mercedes AMG - fastest in all practice sessions; Mercedes AMG- qualifying 1-2 on the grid; Mercedes AMG - finishing the race 1-2. There have been so few failures or team missteps that the slow speed of this race is hard to explain.

From slow-speed handling tracks to high-speed power tracks, Mercedes cars have been fast everywhere. At over 3 miles in length, but with 23 tricky turns, the Singapore track definitely falls into the handling category, The outcome of the race was a disaster for Team Mer-cedes. Lewis Hamilton retired early due to engine problems (the power unit lost power). Nico Rosberg qualified 6th and finished 11th, thus securing valuable team championship points. Reasons for the slow speeds could be that if you get the setup wrong on a handling track, the

power advantage that the Mercedes cars have had, would be negated because the rear wheels are unable to hook up and put the power down to the pavement.

There’s also a conspiracy theory that Mercedes AMG was unable to manipu-late tire pressures to their advantage to obtain the best lap times. Lewis Ham-ilton won the previous race, the Italian Grand Prix, and there were accusations after the race that there were uneven tire pressures not within the race-mandated specs. The win, however, was main-tained. Ferrari, the “home team,” raised a ruckus and speculation is that the sports governing body, FIA, somehow penal-ized Mercedes to make their cars slower. Pure speculation at this point, but we will know for sure by the next race, the Japa-nese Grand Prix, which is also deemed a handling track.

In any event, it makes for an interesting final third of the Grand Prix season. I still think the season will be dominated by Team Mercedes AMG.

I’m looking forward to two great events this month. I hope to see many of you at our regional event, a weekend trip to Taos, NM, October 9-11. Also, on Satur-day, October 17, is our monthly breakfast at the Egg and I restaurant, followed by the “Fall” Rally. The theme, of course, is all things related to and about Fall, i.e., the Fall season, waterfalls, the Fall of the Roman Empire, things that fall, etc. Come on out to see what falls out!

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

2016 Planning Meeting- 3 November 2015

“...we could

use some fresh

ideas from our

members.”

The Best or Nothing!

The Planning Meeting for 2016 events will be held during our regularly scheduled monthly board meeting on Tuesday, 3 November 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs.

After our normal meeting agenda is com-plete, we will decide what events we will be for 2016. Each board member will pitch an idea and a time frame for his or her event. We try to nail down at least one event per month for the year.

If you, our member, have an idea for an event, please plan to attend the meeting so you can present your idea and we can include it on our 2016 schedule. Would

you like to see an overnight event? A leaf-peeping drive? A wine tasting? Bowling? Attend a concert? A poker rally?

There are lots of things we could do and, to be perfectly honest, we could use some fresh ideas from our members. This last year, we tried to do some different things but were unable to generate a lot of en-thusiasm or participation from our mem-bership. It’s very frustrating for our board members to go to the trouble and expense of planning an event, only to have minimal participation. So we obviously need to try something different. Help us out here, Pikes Peak Section - tell us what you want your Club to do.

November Fun Run - 21 November 2015The November monthly breakfast is on for Saturday, 21 November at the Egg & I Restaurant at Citadel Crossing. There is currently no organized “Fun Run” on the agenda. All that means is that after gather-ing for camaraderie and a hearty breakfast, we will decide, spur-of-the-moment-wise, where we want to drive.

It could be a drive to collect Points of Inter-est (POIs) for our Paved Peaks and Pass-

es passports. It could be a drive to Tweed’s in Woodland Park to check out the latest and greatest holiday decorations. It could be a tour of local brew pubs. The possibili-ties are endless.

If you’ve got an idea for a fun run, please let Andrew know or just come to breakfast and pitch your idea. We’re up for anything - and you know, we sure like to drive our cars.

DIY Tech Session - 22 November 2015Time to start thinking about the changing seasons. Yes, I know it’s only August, but the days are already getting shorter and it won’t be long before the leaves start falling and the precipitation changes from rain to sleet. Depressing, isn’t it?

So, what can you do about it? We recom-mend you attend the Fall Do-It-Yourself Tech Session at Mercedes-Benz of Colo-rado Springs, 933 Automotive Drive on Sunday, 22 November. You can check your battery, top off fluids, replace windshield wipers, change your oil, or do anything you can think of to get your Star car ready for winter weather.

We’ll start off at 10:00 in the service bays. As usual, Dave Williamson will have his techs on hand to offer advice and lend a hand, if necessary. Call him at 719-575-7976 to reserve your bay and lift. Cost is only $10.

2015 Holiday Party - 13 December 2015Save the date! Sunday, December 13 is when we kick off the holiday season in style with our annual Holiday Party at the El Paso Club in Colorado Springs. We’re hard at work to make this a memorable evening for our members.

As has become our custom, the evening will be a nostalgic nod to the elegance of the past when guys and dolls dressed “to the nines” and enjoyed an evening of conversa-tion, dining, and fun. So go dig out your cummerbunds and bow ties and your sparkly jackets and heels. It’s time to dress up, people!

We’ve changed up the menu a little this

year - after 5 years, it was time, right? The entree choices are now prime rib, filet with grilled shrimp, or chicken cordon bleu.

There is also a vegetar-ian option available upon request. Dessert options include cherry cobbler, devilish chocolate cake, or eggnog bread pudding, all with ice cream. The cost is still a very reasonable $59

per person.

Fill out the res-ervation form, located below, and send it in today - seating is limited. Or you can give Judy Bennett a call at 719-

576-9737 to get on the guest list.

2016 Potluck Dinner - 31 January 2016

2016 Schedule - TBA

STAY TUNED!

One of the highlights of our Section schedule of events is always our Annual Potluck Dinner. This year, we’re holding it on Sunday, January 31, 2016. That’s the week before Super Bowl 50 in San Fran-cisco. That gives you plenty of time to at-tend both our Potluck and the game - we’re hoping, of course, that the Broncos will be one of the teams playing!

So break out your favorite dishes to share. We all bring hearty appetites and expecta-

tions of a gustatory extravaganza! Main dishes such as casseroles and crockpots, salads, and desserts are on the list of things to bring.

Give Dave Williamson a call at 575-7976 to let him know you are coming and what you will be bringing. We’ll have a surprise raffle and we will be awarding our Paved Peaks & Passes traveling gnome, the Platinum Posterior Award, to some lucky traveler. Don’t miss this evening.

Top Down Lights Drive - 19 December 2016The lights will be bright on the night of 19 December (we hope!) - the night when we gather to put our tops down and turn up our heaters. Bundle up, Pikes Peak Sec-tion, because it’s time for the Top Down Lights Drive. We’re still figuring out the logistics like the route and the starting and ending points. But those are mere details. The main event is the drive, and that will be great!

If you would like to attend, we ask you con-

tribute a small dish - cookies or dessert or something more substantial, such as meat-balls are always good. We will be charging $10 per car to cover the cost of the adult beverages and the rest of the hospitality costs. Please call Steve or Barb Dierks at 719-593-9557 or email him at [email protected]

Drive-In Movie Night RecapTwenty six Pikes Peak Section members from locations far and wide, including New Zealand and Denver, gathered for our 7th annual Labor Day Drive-In Movie Night.

The event started in Woodland Park at the Dinosaur Center, where par-ticipants received

Rally packets, magic tablets, and Rally CDs. Then we were

off on our rally adventure, looking for picture clues in the tablet along the way. There was a rest stop at The Winery at Pikes Peak for a choice of wine or ice-cream, and a chance to sit in a beautiful creek-side dining area. Refreshed, we hied off to historic Mani-tou Springs and through the Garden of the Gods, rated the best park in the United States, to admire the area’s natural beauty. We traveled on to play putt-putt golf and gather more clues for the rally.

When we finally arrived at our homebase, Cheryl and Dan Kerbs’ (aka Sacajawea & Jedediah) house, it was to a champagne toast and grill-your-own steaks and chick-en, with all the sides and beverages. We were welcomed by President Theodore Roosevelt (aka Don Moon), who was kind enough to take photos with all of the partici-pants, answer many questions about Presi-dent Roosevelt’s association with Colorado Springs, and entertain us during dinner with very interesting stories.

Over dessert, we crowned our rally win-ners; Tesh and Sandy Patel placed first, Tim and Marla Wiseman came in second,

and Tom Croak and Joyce Blutt garnered third.

As darkness approached, we adjourned to our cars to watch the featured movie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. And suddenly all the clues we had searched for in the rally made sense! Despite a few rogue show-ers that kept our tops up and sunroofs closed, no one let

those few drops of rain dampen their spirits. With conces-sion stand candy and popcorn in hand, we settled back to com-plete a very enjoy-able day. All in all, it was a great event!

Phase II of our Paved Peaks & Passes driving program is in full swing. Our teams have fanned out across southern Colorado in search of the elusive, but interesting,

points of inter-est. So far, we’ve bagged 314 points - and we’ve got

6 teams eligible for their POI patch, with 2 more closing in on that magic “40.” We have had 5 teams make the trek to Beulah and 3 went all the way to Night-hawk - and even more importantly, actually found the point. Folks have had a great time

driving this summer and are actually vy-ing for the Platinum Posterior Award. Polly (short for Pollux, a giant star - get it?), our traveling gnome, is awarded to the team

that pho-tographs the most POIs (and drives the longest) in one day. He imparts a definite cachet to

the most dedicated P3 teams.

Speculation is rampant about where next year’s passport will take us. If you have any ideas for the 3rd edi-tion of the passport, please contact

Judy Bennett at [email protected], or give her a call at 719-576-9737. We’re having a blast and would love for you to join the drive.

Service Appreciation Day RecapThe Pikes Peak Section inaugurated Ser-vice Appreciation Day at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs on Wednesday, 16 Sep-tember. We decided it was high time to recognize all the hard work and expertise of the techni-cians and service provid-ers at our local dealership.

We hosted 22 of our resi-dent experts in the Service and Parts Departments who take such good care of our Star Cars. A pizza smorgasbord (mixed metaphor, we know) with soda and Gator-Ade, was the menu of choice. We set up in the service bay amid all the Mercedes, with tables and chairs pro-vided by the dealership. Service Direc-

tor, Steve Crosby, addressed our crowd and introduced the Section members who were there and explained the reason for the

unexpected treat.

The service guys were voluble in their thanks; their appreciation for Ser-vice Appreciation Day was evident in the quick disap-pearance of 10 very extra large pizzas! We hope to make this a tradition of

recognition and we are already planning our next Service Ap-preciation Day.

Delivery Party Recap The Pikes Peak Section toasted two more new car deliveries on Friday night, 11 September 2015. Tom Croak took delivery of his shiny new 2015 SL400 and Joyce Blutt celebrated the delivery of her 2016 E250 Blu-Tec with all the bells and whistles. The two of them now have an all- white Mercedes garage. Looks spectacular.

Dave Williamson, PPS board member and sales-man-extraordinaire, and Andrea Hansen arranged the festivities, and helped pop the champagne to toast the newest mem-bers of the Pikes Peak Section garage. Check out all the pictures on Facebook at MBCA Pikes Peak Section.

Colorado Grand Recap The Pikes Peak Section hit the road on Saturday, September 19 for a unique Colorado hat trick. We were able to view gorgeous Rocky Mountain fall colors, check out the Concours d’Non-Elegance of the Colorado Grand®, and pick up 11 points of interest for our Paved Peaks & Passes passport holders. Our 300-mile drive took us from Woodland Park to Fairplay and Breckenridge before heading to Lionshead Village in Vail for the Concours.

The Colorado Grand® is an annual charity tour for pre-1960 sports and race cars of distinction. This year over 100 cars par-ticipated in the 5-day, 1000 mile journey through the Colorado Rockies. Participants included Mercedes-Benz, Shelby, Aston Martin, Allard, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Jag-uar, MG, Maserati, Austin-Healey, Bugatti, Lancia, Bentley, BMW, Morgan, and Fer-rari. The Grand currently generates about $300,000 annually for small Colorado charities and Western Slope towns, as well as college scholarships to graduating high-school seniors from those towns.

We were able to view the wonderful Mer-cedes classics on display including a 1970 C-111, a 1928 Type S Touring, a 1955 300SL Gullwing, a 1955 300SL roadster, 2 1962 300 SL roadsters, a 2015 SL, a brand new AMG GTS provided by MBUSA. Following the Concours, we headed to Minturn for lunch (and a great photo op) at the Turntable Restaurant.

Heading south, we viewed some beautiful fall foliage while collect-ing snapshots of 9 points of interest. After a much needed stop in Buena Vista for ice cream, we wended our way home. It was a great day for a drive. Check out all the pictures on our Facebook page at MBCA Pikes Peak Section.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Like most automakers, Mercedes-Benz is studying the future of the automobile and building concept cars to predict that future. Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled its latest concept, the Intelligent Aerodynamic Auto-mobile (IAA).

A four-door coupe, the IAA may preview the design direction for the next generation of the CLS. More importantly, however, it hints at a future that could include greater use of active aerodynamics.

We’ve seen active grille shutters before, but this vehicle takes that idea much fur-ther. Mercedes calls it a “transformer,” and says that above 50 mph, several exterior changes take place. In addition to active

grille shutters, the flaps in the front bumper move outward and rearward to improve the airflow to the wheels and over the wheel arches. The louver in the front bumper also moves rearward about 2.4 inches to improve airflow to the underbody. The five-spoke wheels fill their gaps to become flat discs with far better aerodynamics. Finally, a rear extension juts out more than 15 inches to create a boattail effect that makes the air hug the vehicle more closely and create a smaller area of turbulence behind the car.

The total effect of these measures lowers the car’s coefficient of drag from 0.25 to a very slippery 0.19. In the ever-evolving search for greater fuel efficiency, these types of measures could make their way to

production vehicles in the future.

The IAA’s interior will likely be more impor-tant in the near term, as Mercedes says elements of it will soon appear in one of its “business” sedans. We’re guessing that’s the next E-Class, which should be shown later this year at the Los Angeles Auto Show or early next year at the Detroit Auto Show. The IAA features a fully digital head unit with two side-by-side 12.3-inch screens capable of showing real-time graphics that Mercedes says otherwise ex-ists only in Hollywood movies. It also has a new touch-based operating surface that Mercedes claims will let drivers better con-centrate on the road. We’re guessing both

of those features are in store for the new E-Class.

The car is 198.4 inches long and has a wheelbase of 117.1 inches. It is 78.5 inches wide, and 51.4 inches tall. Power is de-rived from a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a gasoline engine for a total output of 279 horsepower and 41 miles of electric range (the latter in aerodynamic mode). The top speed is electronically limited to

155 mph.

Mercedes used a completely digital pro-cess which allowed the company to de-velop the IAA in just 10 months instead of the usual 18 for a concept car. Digital prototyping accelerates the development of new generations of cars—but more than that, it also raises their quality and offers opportunities for increased diversity. This is because it allows the development team to simulate and optimize the design from the earliest stages.

“Before we let a new car anywhere near our wind tunnel, it has already successfully passed a barrage of digital tests as a com-plete data model,” Mercedes R&D boss Thomas Weber explains.
