Dr. Zuhdi Jasser to speak at

    Temple Beth Sholom on Sunday

    Oct. 18, 2009.

I can still remember that day,

I believe that most of us can

    remember exactly what we were

doing or where we were when we

heard the news. For our generation, 9/11 had a very similar effect to that

of President Kennedys assassination on the generation of our parents and

    grandparents.

Losing ones innocence, understanding that the world can be a cruel

desolate place devoid of morals or ethics is a horrible reality to wake up

to. Yet I am amazed! As much as we say we remember what happened

on Sept. 11, 2001, as much as we go through the motions of trying to

understand and as much as we sometimes still break into tears, I believe

most of us have truly forgotten why this happened.

I refuse to admit that our country was not prepared, for how can we

possibly defend and protect our country against a terrorist plot that seemed

to spring to life from the pages of a Hollywood Blockbuster Movie script! Who can think of such a way to murder

people in cold blood? The answer: Radical Islamist Fascists!

For those of us who have been to Israel, it is not hard to understand what the threat of Radical Islam is really like.

Israel is surrounded by enemies on all sides who espouse Radical, Fascist and murderous Islamic ideologies. Eventhose countries like Egypt and Jordan whom Israel has peace treaties with - struggle internally to contain the threat

of being eaten alive by that ugly monster!

I remember a cartoon that was published right after 9/11; it showed a calendar in Israel where all the days on it

were marked as Sept. 11. Yes, Israel is prepared and always alert, not because it wants to but because it needs to!

And still, sadly, as prepared as we can be, sometimes there is no way of anticipating what could happen next.

When you travel through Israel, if you pay close attention, when you come upon a place where a terrorist attack

once took place you can see a small plaque listing the names of our fallen brothers and sisters. Instead of making

grandiose monuments and pledging over and over again not to forget, Israel actually does something about it. The

most important step in doing something about terror is understanding who, what and how we are fighting.

Very often I watch in disbelief how we try to apologize for the world! A few months ago, President Obama went to

Cairo and delivered an embarrassing and short-sighted speech where he called on The Muslim World to join America

    in creating a better world.

Did anyone try to remind the President that all of these moderate Muslims he was trying to extend his hand to

were absolutely SILENT after 9/11? I vividly remember all media outlets interviewing Muslims and asking them for

their thoughts right after 9/11. The majority did not condemn the hijackers and their evil plot. Most of them simply

    remained silent.

Time and time again, the defense was used that as long as Israel existed, these things will continue to happen.

Time and time again, we heard then and we hear now that Zionism is the problem according to President Obama,

Israeli Settlements are the problem. NO! The problem is murderers running around without restraint as we try to

    appease them again and again.

    Remembering 9/11

    The Fight Goes On!

SINGMy feet are wet, my sleeves are rolled up, and everything seems to be up and

running as quick as a blink at Temple Beth Sholom. I am looking forward to

meeting all of you and hearing about your connection to this wonderfulshul. Please be patient with me as I slowly learn everybodys name

You will also get to know me little by little along this journey So many things are important to me as a cantor

Hopefully at our services you will see that the participation of the congregation is amustin my eyes. Yes, it can behard to join in the singing when there are new melodies to get used to. Just try. Close your eyes if you have to, or usethe text in oursiddurimas an aid. I want you to feel comfortable in joining me.After all, the chanting of our prayers in synagogue is nota performance! Judaism isnota spectator sport we areallpart of the game. When the whole assembly adds to the conglomeration of the symphony in song, we are all backat Mount Sinai together. The music is that powerful! And my favorite moments on the bimah are when I am able to

stop singing and listen to the beauty of scores of voices in unison, all around me.

So, when you see me at shul, introduce yourself to me, be patient with me, and when we are davening sing with me.

Kamala, Ezra, Maiella, and Solomon join me in wishing you an inscription and seal in the Book of Life for 5770

Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas

Opens 2009-2010The Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas opened its sixth

year of school on Monday, August 24, 2009! This year is special

because it is both the first year the school has not added a new

grade (Schechter is a K-5 elementary school) and the first year

students will begin the year in the Friedman Family Pavilion.

Schechter classrooms are now state-of-the-art and include SMART

Board technology. Amazingly, even in these difficult economic

times, Conservative Jewish Day School Education in Las Vegas the

partnership between Solomon Schechter, the Temple Beth Sholom

Preschool, and the Midbar Kodesh Temple Early Childhood Center

will still continue to educate nearly 300 students this year. All

three schools demonstrate that you dont have to sacrifice a high-quality Jewish and Hebrew education in order to have the highest

quality secular education. With outstanding faculty, community

support, and committed parents, the Solomon Schechter Day

Schools vision of students who are as equally literate in Hebrew

as they are in English; as facile with a siddur as they are with a

microscope; as comfortable discussing American politics as they

are Israeli this vision is being realized.

    Speaking of microscopes

On the very first day of school, grades began to make use of Las

Vegas only Robotics & Engineering Laboratory in Schechters

state-of-the-art Science Lab. Under the dynamic leadership of new

Science Teacher Rebecca Rouas, Schechter students will receivecutting edge science education. Kids came home the first day of

    school enthusiastic about science!

Schechter Parent Organization HostsWelcome Back Picnic

The Schechter Parent Organization held its annual Welcome Back

Picnic on Sunday, September 13th. The event took place in Paseos

Park in Summerlin with a large crowd in attendance. The afternoon

featured water play, face-painting, a bounce house and more. The

Schechter Parent Organization looks forward to offering Schechter

parents even more opportunities to learn, celebrate, and create

    community than ever before.

Schechter Holds Back to School NightOn September 15th, Schechter held its annual Back to School

night. Parents had an opportunity in a relaxed environment to

learn more about their childrens teachers, classroom routines,

curriculum and special projects. It was also an opportunity for

parents to volunteer for committees and to register their credit

cards on escrip.com (you dont have to be a Schechter Parent

register) to make donations to Schechter. Thanks to the Parent

Organization and the Schechter Committee for their help in

    organizing the evening.

It all began on August 23, when the Religious School Faculty gathered together at our Faculty

Orientation to begin planning what will surely be one of the most exciting years of the Judy andRonald Mack School of Religious Studies! Later that day a large number of new and returning

families attended our annual Back to School BBQ. (Thanks to the Mens Club for all their help in

preparing this years bbq.) This year the new integrated curriculum that was introduced last year to our Third through Seventh

Graders has been applied to our K-2nd Grade program. We look forward to matching the same level of energy and excitement

in our younger grades as we do our older ones.

On September 13th we welcomed back students, parents and teachers as the first day of Religious School officially began!

With the help of our energetic faculty, parent volunteers and our wonderful Midrasha students, the first day of Religious School

went according to plan. Students dove right into their studies in each of their classes while finding time to make decorations

for Sukkot. We are looking forward to hanging these beautiful decorations around the Sukkah!!!

We hope all Religious School families can join us for some special upcoming events:

To celebrate Sukkot, we will be holding the third annual Pizza in the Hut on Wednesday, October 7 th, from 5:30-6:30

Two years ago, at the 2007 Federation of Jewish Mens

LDOR VDORMaking a Difference for Seniors

    By Shel Kolner

After the summer sabbatical, LDor VDor is starting its new year

Plans for the events that will take place in 5770 are already under

way. We continue to make an impact on the seniors in the Southern

Nevada Valley. We are the premiere outreach program in Southern

Nevada and we do make a difference.

On September 9th LDor VDor hosted over 200 seniors from loca

facilities and their homes. We celebrated the High Holy Days with

entertainment by our students from the Stanley and Sandra Early

Childhood Center and dancing by The TBS Dancers of Light. After

the entertainment our guests moved into the Social Hall and enjoyed

a luncheon catered by Certified Master Chef Gustav Mahler, owner of

Spiedini Ristorante. Again the entire event was a hit with our guests.

The LDor VDor board continually critiques our events looking for

ways to improve them. As we do this, we are always appreciative of

the number of people who tell us how much they enjoyed the day

out and are looking forward to the next event. Even while waiting

for their busses they were extolling the virtues of the day. We really

domake a difference. Our guests really enjoy what we are doing fo

    them.

Volunteersare still the backbone of our organization. If you can

spare a few hours every other month please callLillian Radomsky a

942-3251 or 553-9425 (cell). If you can provide transportation for ourguests, drivers are needed for this short time period. If you have the

time we have the opportunity for you to do a Mitzvah.

Please call Karen Berke at 341-5112 if you would like to volunteer

in the social hall. You can always call Shel Kolner, the coordinator

at 228-4744 or 334-8914 (cell) for more details about any aspect o

    LDor VDor.

Our next event is scheduled to celebrate the Sukkot. It will be on

Tuesday, October 27th. We have also set the Chanukah event for

Tuesday, December 15th. If you would like to enjoy our events with

us, call now! We will put you on our list. It is a very satisfying few

    hours.

If you know of any senior who is homebound and could benefit

from this opportunity to socialize with other people, please call theLDor VDor coordinator, Shel Kolner (228-4744 or 334-8914), or

the Temple office (804-1333 ext 100). Well make sure they receive

    invitations to the upcoming events.

Again, we invite you to join the camaraderie and see how good it

feels to make a difference in the life of a homebound or facility bound

senior by being part ofthe LDor VDor Volunteer program. This trulyis a Mitzvah!

We want to thank all the sponsors of these events for their continued

donations. We are most appreciative of them and for the support o

the United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas.

If we want to remember the victims

of 9/11, it is important to do it by

understanding that as long as we dont

face the threat of Radical Fascist Islam

with open eyes and stop lying to ourselves

thinking these people can be appeased

if we go through life thinking that they can

understand ethics, morality and love the

same way we do, then 9/11 will happen

    again.

In trying to understand the constant

threat of Radical Fascist Islam, Temple

Beth Sholom is bringing to Las Vegas anextraordinary speaker.

I would like you to mark your calendars

with an important date. On Sunday Oct.

18, 2009 at 4:30 PM, Temple Beth Sholom

will be hosting Dr. Zuhdi Jasser who is the

director of The American Islamic Forum

for Democracy. Dr. Jasser is perhaps one

of the most outspoken critics of Radical

Fascist Islam. Dr. Jasser is also a devout

Muslim. He is the voice and the vision

behind the documentary, The Third Jihad.

I highly recommend that you watch TheThird Jihad before coming to Dr. Jassers

    lecture. Our congregation has arranged

for a screening of The Third Jihad on

Tuesday Oct. 13, 2009, at 7 PM here at

Temple Beth Sholom. Dr. Jassers lecture

the following Sunday Oct. 18, 2009 at

    4:30 PM.

In closing, I would like to thank the

Mens Club of Temple Beth Sholom

and the committee that oversees the

    Warsaw Ghetto Remembrance Garden

for providing us with the necessary funds

to make this program available. Everycontribution made to The Warsaw Ghetto

Remembrance Garden project at TBS goes

to a special fund that is used to promote

a better understanding of how hate and

racism can be dealt with and eventually

    eliminated from our world.

Bnei MitzvahBnei Mitzvah Happenings -By Adam Brustein

As I write this article, summer is ending, and a new school year has begun. Already,

our weekly Bnai Mitzvot is in full swing, and the High Hoy Days are right around thecorner. Although many were away for much of the season, I was pleased that wewere able to have a nice representation of Torah Readers from our post-Bnai Mitzvahstudents throughout the summer. However, I would like to comment on one of thosesummer Shabbatim that really stands out for me.

On this particular Shabbat, we were privileged to have a post-Bnai Mitzvah studentread for the congregation. This student did not travel a smooth road to becoming aBnai Mitzvah; in fact, at one point the big day was postponed, and there were doubtsas to whether it would ever take place. Yet, after the big event had passed, this student still volunteered to readfrom the Torah for us, and did so with great pride and poise.

As it happens, on this same Shabbat, another former student attended the service. This student had beenexceptional, and I was delighted to see him at Temple, not just to catch up with him, but also with the anticipationthat I could recruit him to join the Teen Torah program. However, when I discussed this possibi lity with him,he said that he thought it was a good idea, but that he had forgotten how to read Hebrew and was too busy tore-start the process. Despite my assurances that it would not be difficult for him and that I would gladly help, itbecame apparent that it just was not going to happen at this particular time. I have no doubt that this studentwill be immensely successful in his various pursuits, but, sadly, his synagogue skills will not be sustained.

I believe that this is a classic example of the importance of the Teen Torah program. Unfortunately, I can findmany examples of students falling through the cracks in our Temple over the past eight and a half years thatI have worked here, but I am hoping that this will change. Of course, there will be students who choose not totake part in the program; this is up to them. Hopefully, they will connect with Judaism in other ways, by takingadvantage of different opportunities provided by the Temple and the general community. But I do encourageevery student to participate, and, should they choose to do so, they will receiveguidance and support throughoutthe preparation process, from me and/or Cantor Alpert. If you are interested in participating in this programor have other questions, please call me anytime, day or night, at 497-5267. I hope to hear from you.
