Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall announces its next quarterly public open house of Grant Hall’s historic third-floor courtroom, at Fort McNair in southwest Washington D.C., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. The courtroom is the site of the military tribunal, held from May through June 1865, of those thought responsible for the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Members of the public are invited to the public open house, which is free. Guests without a Department of Defense, federal or Automated Installation Entry ID are asked to register in advance at the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Facebook events page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/jbmhh/events/ and access the Grant Hall Open House site.

First click on the tab with the date of the open house you want to attend. Click on the “Find Tickets” tab to access the reservation site. Open the envelope, read the information and click on the “RSVP” button to complete your reservation. If your computer server does not allow you to access the site, email your reservation to JBM-HH public affairs at [email protected]. Full names of all attendees are required, as well as a valid telephone or email contact.

Marine Corps Birthday Run On Tuesday, Nov. 5 traffic

will be temporarily delayed for the 244th Marine Corps Birthday Run. Runners will step off from 406 Field at 9 a.m. and run through Wright Gate to the Iwo Jima Memorial and back. Spates parking lot (Tri-Services Parking Lot C) and Memorial Chapel Parking Lot (Tri-Services Parking Lot D) will be blocked off starting Monday, Nov. 4 from 10 p.m. until noon, Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Flu Clinics update Rader Clinic is still awaiting additional flu shot shipments. While they're hopeful to receive them by mid-November, they ask that community members view their options online via the following link: https://health.mil/Military-Health-Topics/Health-Readiness/Immunization-Healthcare/Vaccine-Preventable-Diseases/Influenza-Seasonal/Influenza-Vaccine-Availability The chief nurse and team at the Washington, D.C. Veteran Affairs are willing to assist Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall with flu vaccinations for veterans and military personnel during the shortage. They have a free, walk-in Flu Shot Clinic set up in their atrium, near the outpatient pharmacy. The Flu Shot Clinic in the D.C. VA Medical Center Atrium, 50 Irving St., NW Washington, DC, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Veterans will need to bring their VA identification card. Military personnel can bring their DOD ID and just let their team know that they are with Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Individuals should the clinic know if they require paper documentation of those military personnel who receive the vaccination. As part of VA's Community Care program, veterans who are enrolled in VA health care can receive a free flu shot at any Walgreens. No appointment is necessary, but veterans will need to show their VA identification card and one other form of photo identification. Thanksgiving for single service members Single service members and geographical bachelor/bachelorettes from all services in the National Capital Region who are not going home for Thanksgiving and who do not have family in the area are invited to participate in the 2019 Patriot Thanksgiving Luncheon Cruise Tuesday, Nov. 26. Ship boarding begins at 10:30 a.m.; an opening ceremony is at 11:30 a.m.; and the luncheon cruise is from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets are for individual service members, and tickets are required. All service members interested in signing up must contact their commands. No guest will be allowed to attend as this event is strictly for single soldiers and geographical bachelors. Attire is business casual, no jeans or gym shoes. The 2019 Patriot Thanksgiving Luncheon Cruise, is hosted by Hornblower Cruises & Events and members of the Washington Waterfront Association. The cruise sails up the Potomac River to Georgetown and back, and includes a delicious Thanksgiving meal and entertainment. Quarterly Civilian Awards Oct. 30 The quarterly award ceremony for civilian employees is slated to take place Wednesday, Oct. 30 at Spates Community Center from 1 to 3 p.m. Recognitions will include civilians and team awards for the fourth quarter, FY19 and Fiscal Year 2019. Backstage at the USO On Nov. 14, the USO brings a day of patriotism to The Wharf. Participate in a care package event — a USO tradition. At 4 p.m. the USO will be on Transit Pier stuffing care packages and there will be live music on the floating stage.

The event is followed by the Backstage at the USO concert at The Anthem, open to service members and their spouse. The first 200 service members to sign up have the opportunity to take transportation from JBM-HH to the event. Service members are authorized to bring one guest. The event includes a variety show hosted by Wilmer Valderrama, with music by Brantley Gilbert and comedy by Paula Poundstone. Please note, the comedy portion is for mature audiences only. 2019 Holiday Toy Program The JBM-HH Army Community Service Volunteer Association, a command-sanctioned non Federal entity, will sponsor its 2019 Holiday Toy Program in conjunction with the Fort Myer Chapel Holiday Commissary gift card program. Those who wish to donate to the toy program are encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys and/or $25 store gift cards to the Fort Myer Army Community Service, 202 Custer Rd, Bldg. 201, Fort Myer, VA 22211 between Nov. 11 and Dec. 6, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday except holidays. Watering is a good thing

Residents are encouraged to water the newly planted winter flowers at the housing quarters. With insufficient water, the flowers will wilt and wither. Furthermore, the ground contractor has aerated and seeded the lawns for next year. Watering your lawn for a minimum of three days per week to will enable the seeds to germinate.

Armed Forces Day with Mutt Love Rescue Honor Armed Forces Day and Animal Welfare Week by volunteering to help dogs in need. On Nov. 2, service members are invited to Webers Pet Supermarket in Fairfax, Virginia, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to volunteer as a dog handler. Help is needed, the organization is seeking 30 volunteers. To reserve a spot as a volunteer contact Sgt. Jump Mentor program Service members are invited to become a mentor to an elementary or middle school student. The executive committee of the retiree council meets quarterly the first Thursday in the months of February, May, August and November. General membership meetings occur quarterly on the second Thursday of the above months.

Contribute to the Combined Federal Campaign

From now until Jan. 12, 2020, the JBM-HH community will have an opportunity to "show some love" during this year's annual Combined Federal Campaign.

Active duty, retired and Department of the Army civilians have an opportunity to donate to more than 7,000 charities which can be done through a payroll deduction or a one-time payment. To donate, visit opm.gov/ShowSomeLoveCFC click on "Donate" on the local zone website. Once an individual is on the site, he or she must build a profile if this is his or her first time using the website. National American Indian Heritage Month observance Join JBM-HH Equal Opportunity Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the JBM-HH Community Center, Bldg. 405 in observance of National American Indian Heritage Month. The event celebrates the culture, contributions, heritage of the Native Americans while recognizing the accomplishments of the people who were the original inhabitants, explorers and settlers of the United States. Entertainment will be provided by Piscataway Indian Nation Singers and Dancers. The free event, which includes food sampling, is open to active duty military, retirees, DOD civilians and Family members.

Take a Vet to the movies

In honor and observance of Veterans Day, the Ernest E. Just Foundation Inc. will host a “Take a Vet to the Movies” day Sunday Nov. 10 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. The event will feature the 1984 blockbuster, “A Soldier’s Story” starring Howard Rollins, Adolph Caesar, Denzel Washington, and Patty LaBelle. The movie starts at 3 p.m.

Free Parking will be available in local garages and local restaurants will be honoring veterans with free meals.

Fitness Center staff hours and access The Fort McNair Fitness center has 24-hour access. A key fob or registered CAC is required to access the facility. To register, visit the gym during staff hours, 6-10 a.m. weekdays, or call the fitness center at (202) 685-3117. All patrons will need a 24-hour access key fob to gain entry. On guest per ID card holder is allowed.

McNair Ceremonial Gate inbound closure The Fort McNair Ceremonial Gate will be closed to inbound traffic during a pop-up barrier installation through Friday, Nov. 1. The gate will be open from 6 to 9 a.m. to accommodate traffic. Daily outbound traffic will not be affected.

American Holiday Festival Ticket release The annual kick-off concert for the Washington, D.C., holiday season performed by the talented musicians of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” will be presented at DAR Constitution Hall Dec. 6 through 8. An annual tradition, the concert features The U.S. Army Orchestra, Herald Trumpets, and Army Band vocalists. Free tickets will be available online only, beginning Friday, Nov. 1 for the following dates and times:

Car wash closed

The Henderson Hall car wash has announced that it will not be reopening in the foreseeable future. The infrastructure was found to need adjustments that must happen before the car wash can be opened. Updates will be posted as they become available.

New Parents support New Parents are welcomed every Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Henderson Hall Chapel for a parental support class and play date for children. To register, call Henderson Hall Family Services at (703) 614-7208. Marine Corps Exchange new hours of operation The Marine Corps Exchange at Henderson Hall has new hours of operation.

Monday – Saturday

9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunday and holiday

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A Tribute to Veterans Joint Career Fair A joint career fair will take place in JBM-HH Spates Community Center, Thursday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2p.m.

Recruiters and hiring managers will be available to take resumes and conduct on-the-spot interviews with potential applicants. This is an excellent opportunity to network and meet face-to-face with military-friendly employers.

All active duty service members, military spouses, and veterans are highly encouraged to attend. Open to Family members, retirees, and DOD civilians
