Editorial

The hobby of collecting all things that move on wheels has reached a new level. Many car and motorcycle owners have a passion for all things old and have started the collecting of vintage and Classic Cars. This led to the formation of over forty clubs related to automobiles in India in the last seventy years. The most popular events hosted by the Statesman in Calcutta (Kolkata) and Delhi is the annual vintage car rally. Passionate car collectors get together on this day and enjoy their vintage beauties, with loads of people ogling over them.

Some collectors can afford to maintain their family heirloom car and some buy them for the sheer love of the beauty. Some collectors pick them from junk and restore them to its former glory. This is the passion that drives a vintage car collector to the 8th HMCI National Auto Jumble held on the Delhi/Gurgaon border at the Throttle Shrottle Moto Cafe on 23rd & 24th October 2021.

The cafe is bang on the main road, a regular joint for bikers old and new, they get together here to share their passion for bikes. Occasionally a vintage bike also comes to fi ll its tank here, as shared by Gurmukh, a passionate vintage bike restorer based in Gurgaon. He spent two full days at the show and also managed to fi nd an original owner of a 1917 Triumph that was on display at the Auto Jumble, ironically, the bike was also starting with one kick, after being in storage for over a hundred years.

The Auto Jumble was visited by many club members and local residents who came to know about this unique sale of old items, related to cars/bikes and anything vintage. That included old household items, music, photos, books, cameras, decorative items made of wood, glass and metal of the yesteryears etc. Some artists were also there from other cities, sharing their passion for automotive art.

The event was also witness to some spot stunts by the bikers, who are regular visitors to this pit to fi ll their tanks and bellies. It was a treat for many to fi nd all sorts of trinkets and display items that may fi nd a place in their living rooms. I also managed to share my aviation photographs and souvenirs with the automobile freaks and connoisseur.

Plan such an event in your city also for all to enjoy....

Book Reviews

The defence forces of a nation play an important role in the safety and security and its people. They have been highlighted since the opening of the fi rst Indian Field Post offi ce in Bushire, South Persia in 1856. Since then till 1947 Indian Field Post Offi ces have served with all military contingents sent out of India in all its frontier campaigns. In 1879 the fi rst envelope was issued in 9 pies for use by Indian and British soldiers, by 1895 the envelope was overprinted with a crown and uprated to One Anna. By 1900 Indian forces deployed abroad were using envelopes and postcards overprinted C.E.F. (China Expeditionary Force), during WWI Indian forces were using I.E.F. (Indian Expeditionary Force) envelopes and postcards.

These campaigns helped India build a very positive image, they were also deployed with the IIC Commissions in Indo-China states of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the early 50s. Indian stamps were overprinted and used in the Indian FPO’s. This overprinting of stamps continued till 1968. By 1958 the fi rst set of commemorative stamps was issued by the Indian Air Force. This was followed by a set of stamps in 1963 on our defence efforts during the 1962 Chinese aggression.

The army postal service started issuing special covers on the Indian armed forces after the Indian forces victory of the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Commemorative stamps have been issued on almost all the arms of the Indian army that includes the peace keeping forces under the UN, eminent offi cers and men, honours & awards, president's bodyguards, armoured regiments, mechanised Infantry, Infantry regiments,

artillery, air defence, army aviation, engineers, signals, logistics and medical services, training institutions and formations.

This was followed by Indian Air Force squadrons and units. Indian naval ships, aircraft and establishments have also found their place. The territorial units of the Indian army and Indian Coast Guard stamps are also illustrated.

The 88 page soft back book has it all. A ready reference book, it’s an important guide for any new comers in this fi eld, who are making a study and collection of Indian Armed Forces artefacts and history.

Postcrossing - Hobby for those with passion for collecting and writing

Postcrossing is all about exchanging postcards with random people around the world and living by our

Upanishad phrase “वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम”् which means The World is One Family.

India has 10643 postcrossers, who enjoy this hobby and have sent 369700 postcards as of Sep’21.I came across this hobby of exchanging postcards when I met a few postcrossers at Bangalore GPO and have never stopped since then.

Today, I eagerly wait for my postman to come and deliver to me that piece of joy on paper coming from far off lands. Or I wait for that email which tells me that my postcard has reached someone and helped them to know a little more about India by either the stamps that I have used on the postcard or with the help of a postcard. In the world of emails, text messages and whatsapp, this is a welcome change that is bringing me back to writing postcards.

As part of this hobby called Deltiology (Collecting & study of Postcards), and Postcrossing, I also came across a society dedicated to this wonderful hobby; “Postcrossing Society of India (PSOI)” which is lead by veteran Col. Akhil Kumar and a few enthusiastic fellow postcrossers.

This society has organized many great events To highlight a few, recently PSOI in association with India Post and Directorate General of Lighthouses And Lightships (DGLL) organised events to commemorate two historic lighthouses namely Pulicat lighthouse, Tamilnadu and Hajira Lighthouse in Surat, Gujarat. Permanent Pictorial Cancellations (PPC) were released at both these events and also released postcards on lighthouses.

Such events not only bring the postcrosers across India together, but also spreads knowledge on events such as International and Indian Lighthouse Day and many more. In the past PSOI has organized and

released 12 postcards in collaboration with PostcardsVille on Traditional Toys of India, each one from a different state of India – which was well received across the globe by postcrossers and postcard lovers.

India's $ rst on-line exhibition on Postcards named Debutpex: Award ceremony at Communication Museum,Bangalore presided over by Mrs Sharada Samth, CPMG Karnatka circle on 21 Oct 2020.

Autograph Collecting

Imagine about thirty-fi ve years ago, kids without mobiles or video games. How did they pass their time in holidays? Fortunately they had various hobbies. Reading comics and other story books, Collecting stamps and coins was popular among the kids. Getting autographs of famous people and artists was one of the hobbies. I started collecting autographs from schools days. My school felicitated famous Marathi Authors and I got the opportunity to get autographs of eminent Marathi writers such as Shirwadkar. My teachers encouraged me and helped me getting autograph of Kusumagraj, recipient of Dyanpith award in literature.

Once I met Bhai aka Pu La Deshpande and requested his autograph. Instead of giving autograph he asked me read his book, contemplate and write two to three lines. After that send a letter requesting autograph. Today I am proud, I have his autographed letter. Similarly, when I had the opportunity to meet senior scientist Jayant Narlikar, he asked me to ask any one of the scientifi c questions or any question paper in science, and I would reply to that letter and send my signature.

The purpose behind doing so is that, school children should study science with curiosity, by doing new research from it. Today I can proudly say that I have a letter in my collection with an answer to my classical question.

When I got the chance to meet a beautiful Marathi actress Sonali Kulkarni, I requested her for autograph. She asked me "what about selfi e?" I was overwhelmed to get her autograph and selfi e. Trekking is also

one of my favorite hobbies. Eight years ago, an organization from Sangamner had arranged a book

reading event on the highest mountain peak in Maharashtra, Kalsubai. It was an unforgettable memory to

climbed to the top, listen to book reading of "Last for Lalbagh" from the author Vishwas Patil's. He shared

his writing experiences and read some of the highlights of his book. Not to mentioned I got his autograph.

For many years, I have been attending lectures, awards and felicitation ceremonies of many dignitaries. I

try to meet the dignitaries at the end of the program to get autographs. Many times I get, but sometimes

I don't get autographs.

When I went to meet the famous actor Nana Patekar at a similar event, he was taken aback by the

excitement of his fans, who were pushing and shoving him to take a photo with him. He refused to give

autograph in the chaos and left the event. In the days where selfi e is more common politely requesting

autograph is long gone and forgotten. Sometimes the rudeness and pushy selfi e enthusiast force personal

security guards to cordon off the celebrity and a genuine collector miss autographs.

During ancient time, worshiping trees was a most common ritual. It is believed that Durga was created

by the three gods -Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma who are symbolized by the Banyan tree. In

Hinduism, according to another belief, the roots of Peepal tree are Brahma, the trunk is Vishnu and the

leaves are Shiva and to please Lord Shiva, leaves of Bel tree are offered to Him.

Durga puja starts from Shasthi. The three main events are:

Kalparambha, Bodhan, Adhibas and Amontran which takes place

at Beltala, i.e. under the Bel tree, (wood apple) in the evening

hours. During this ritual, the process of invocating Ma Durga

takes place, as Bel tree is considered to be Ma Durga herself.

On Saptami, during the morning hours, the most auspicious

event is the Bathing Ritual of the Kolabou or Nabapatrika.

Nabapatrika actually was a ritual performed by the farmers for

having a prosperous harvest. People worshiped Nature.

Idol-worship was not common then. During the Autumn season,

the crops ripen and are harvested. The peasants worshipped

Goddess Nabapatrika for good harvest. Later when Durga Puja

gained popularity, this ritual was added to it.

Mahishasura is a Sanskrit word meaning “buffalo demon”.

According to Christopher Fuller, Mahishasura represents the

forces of ignorance and chaos hidden by outer appearances.

Mahishasuramardini-The Killer of Mahishasura is actually the

story of “the triumph of Good over Evil".

Here is an exquisite clay model of Mahishasuramardini, from Gorer Haat, Uttarpara, from Taluk- JoyNagar,

district South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. The famous clay dolls of JoyNagar are handcrafted and

boasts of an unparalleled earthen appeal of its own. They are uniquely baked. These are made by hand

and is very traditional but this majestic art form is struggling from becoming extinct. The use of a wide-

array of colours makes these fi gurines look exclusive and lively. Garjan oil is used on these dolls to

enhance their lustre and make them look more appealing.
