One team name might be a head scratcher this week at the Roy Hobbs World Series.

That name is T-Town Jack-Os.For starters, where is this T-Town?Tampa?Tacoma?Tulsa?Timbucktoo?None of the above. It’s Tallahassee.More perplexing might be the nickname - Jack-Os.Jack-O’s?It’s not a subtle and mis-spelled tribute to Hall of Fame

umpire Jocko Conlan, who umpired in the National League from 1941 to 1965.

Halloween-themed Jacko’s the ‘funnest!’

It’s a Halloween theme. That’s the explanation from Jack-O’s Manager Ryan Potter.

He said the idea came from player Jason Price’s wife Tonya, who thought because the team plays in the World Series in October it should have some sort of Halloween-themed name.

Jack-O’s is short, Potter explained, for jack-o-lantern.The colorful name is enhanced by colorful jerseys, one of

which resembles the old Houston Astros uniform with the bold colorful horizontal stripes.

The team even had a logo designed by player Jason Freeman.

“He created a mascot from scratch,” Potter said. It’s all part of how they do things in Tallahassee, and also

Fort Myers.“I know we stand out,” Potter said.

High school students greet RH playersBy GLENN MILLERRoy Hobbs Baseball

One of the first points of contact with the Roy Hobbs World Series over the weekend for many players wasn’t with people their own age or older.

Not even close. They met people much younger.

As players trooped into the PDC and stepped through screen doors into a lanai they were met by and helped by teenagers.

Handing players packets and help-ing them with forms were youngsters such as Estero High juniors Isabella DeMarco and Josh Beers and fresh-man Jose Martinez. Also on duty were students from Mariner High School such as Emma Olsen and Paige Ro-drigo.

The students were at the PDC over the weekend to collect service hours

and were also the beneficiaries of donations from Roy Hobbs Baseball for various programs at the two Lee County high schools.

The youngsters said they enjoyed meeting the players.

“They’re not too cranky,” Emma Olsen said.

A moment later, she added, “They’re very kind.”

The service hours program is co-ordinated by Karen S. Marcinkoski, the Roy Hobbs World Series office manager and registration supervisor.

She contacted local high schools early in the school year for clubs and organizations interested in sending students over to collect service hours.

“They benefit,” Marcinkoski said., “We benefit. It’s a win-win.”

The students enjoy the work. What will they tell classmates about their time at the Roy Hobbs World Series?

“They missed out,” Jose Martinez said.

NOTEBOOK

Playoff pitching guidelinesRoy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be

starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8th and 9th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings – 6 outs or 10 hitters – during pool play.

AAAA qualifier teams may not add pitchers to their lineup after Pool Play concludes; however, Open Division teams may have pitchers arrive Wednesday – those pitchers much throw 5 innings or 25 hitters to qualify for the playoffs.

Finally, in the playoffs, those “non-qualified” middle-inning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive positions where they started the game.  That is as important as the “spirit of the rule” that these non-qualified pitchers who are used as “inning-eaters” are players who ordinarily are playing other positions.

And, please remember that any players leaving the RHWS today (Monday) to return on Thursday MUST turn in their player ID Card and re-check in upon their return. They must return before the quarterfinals of the playoffs, regardless of division.

Managers should email a list of their qualified pitchers to [email protected] by 7 p.m. the night before their playoffs begin.

in the dugouts. When your games are over and you are leaving the dugout,

please police it for trash and cups, etc. Your assistance in cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated.

First AidTwo key First Aid items: Drink plenty of fluids while playing

and before you get to the field; don’t just wait until the game is over. Water will be available at the fields.

Second, be sure to stretch and loosen up before playing, or even re-entering a game.

In case of an emergency, contact the field manager at your site, or the concessions person if closer. We do have the First Aid supplies and will contact 911 services as needed.

Ice is available for injuries … check with the field manager on duty or go to the nearest concession stand to have the appropriate personnel paged. Roy Hobbs requests that managers plan for pitchers needing ice for their arms and to supply it.

Playing site securityThe active steps taken several years ago to deal with parking

lot security will continue as parking lot theft issues have – knock on wood – not been an issue the last 7 years.

A lot of time and thought went into the team’s look. The TJ on their caps is similar, Potter said, to the insignia on the caps of Toro de Tijuana, a Mexican professional team.

“We wanted to have a fun theme,” Potter said. The Jack-O’s got the World Series off to a fun start Sunday morning

at the PDC with a 12-4 victory over the Kodak Reds. The Jack-O’s went 1-6 last year and are now 1-0.Do they have the best name this year?“I don’t know if it’s the best,” Potter said. But he believes it may be the “funnest.”The Jack-O’s may enhance their fun and the Halloween theme as

the week progresses. As Potter chatted on the lanai at the PDC Sunday somebody suggested bringing actual jack-o-lanterns into the team’s dugout.

“That is a great idea,” Potter said.Look for the Jack-O’s to have jack-o-lanterns at some point this week.

Are we out of the woods? No, it is a daily procedure and effort to make sure parking lots are safe.

Once again, Roy Hobbs will have personnel posted at the player/spectators’ entrances to Terry Park, PDC, JetBlue Complex and at the entrance to the Quad fields at Lee County.

These individuals will have a view of the parking lot, and they will be available in emergencies, be enforcing cooler guidelines and handling admissions.

Customer Service Roy Hobbs Baseball is proud of its record on

customer service.Staff members are required to wear identifying

staff shirts during the working hours of the tournament and should be easily identifiable. At least two are assigned to each of the satellite complexes daily.

In the case of emergency, please go to the nearest concession stand at the satellite complexes, where someone will be available to summon help.

Roy Hobbs field managers and key personnel are Red Cross First Aid certified, and Roy Hobbs Baseball has guidelines in place on the handling of injuries. Additionally, AED devices are available at each of the facilities, and Roy Hobbs personnel have been trained on those devices.
