QUAVERS - Page 1 - Oct, 2016 From the President I just got back from the WSMTA Leadership Confer- ence and my mind is spinning with thoughts and ideas. I'd like to share one session with you and a challenge. Janice Smith, our state president led a session titled "How's you chapter's DNA?". In this case, DNA stood for Durable, Noteworthy, and Active. Each table of 8 examined one aspect and then shared their thoughts and ideas with the whole group. Interestingly a few key words kept cropping up. One of these words was 'community'. Each table des- cribed community in a variety of ways - a family, a network, a group of friends, an area where we live or work. The groups also described the character of a community - sup- portive, professional, safe, encouraging, inspirational, ver- satile, innovative, welcoming, and more. As I thought about our chapter as a community I saw how we embody all of these descriptions and characteristics, and I recog- nized that this is one of the primary reasons that I so enjoy being involved in this chapter. Do you feel the same? There are many music teachers in our geographical community who are running their studios in isolation; teaching without professional support, a welcoming gathering, innovative and inspirational education. I've often shared with my family and friends that when I'm at a chapter meeting or event, I feel a connection that runs deep in my soul. You all "get me". We speak the same language. Let's share this special community with those 'on the out- side'. Let's spread the news about our educational and per- formance opportunities for teachers and students. Let's in- vite and welcome our neighbor child's clarinet teacher and our babysitters saxophone teacher to our music communi- ty. KMTA is a Durable, Noteworthy, and Active chapter with many gifted individuals. We have a mission to fulfill not only amongst ourselves but in our larger communities, a mission to bring the joys of music to all we come in con- tact with. I challenge you to share your passion and be in- vitational. I have a friend who's son studies trumpet with a teacher outside of the KMTA family. I think I'll invite his teacher to consider entering him in our Kitsap Young Musi- cian's Festival, a perfect non-threatening way to see our chapters DNA. Diane Layton, President From the Vice President Kitsap Young Musicians Festival. Christmas at the Mall. Monster Concert. Adjudications. State Recitalist Competition. Honors Recital. Carnival. Though it’s “only” October, planning for all of these is going on NOW! You’ll want to come to our October meeting to hear directly from the program chairs about each of their events and how YOU might get involv- ed: as a studio teacher, as a volunteer, as a leader. If any of these events are new to you or your studio, there will be op- portunity for you to ask questions about what they are and how they work. We will also be hearing about new approaches to our scholarship competitions which may open them up to more student participation. Bainbridge Performing Arts

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra presentsThe British are Coming!

Nov. 12 & 13: Sat. @ 7:30 p.m. & Sun. @ 3:00 p.m. Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra kicks off its season with resplendent works by three of England’s finest com-posers. William Walton wrote Crown Imperial: Coronation March for the crowning of Edward VIII in May 1937. When Edward VIII abdicated, the work was instead performed for his younger brother, George VI. Vaughan Williams wrote his Piano Concerto in C for pianist Harriet Cohen. Perform-ed with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra by guest solo-ist Cristina Valdés, this virtuosic concerto pays homage to Bach while also expressing a percussive and exuberant energy. The program concludes with Edward Elgar’s Enig-ma Variations in which each variation is inspired by and dedicated to Elgar’s friends or loved ones. Considered one of today’s foremost interpreters of contemporary music, pianist Cristina Valdés is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Washington. She has performed across four continents and in venues such as Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Miller Theatre, Jordan Hall, and the Kennedy Center. An avid chamber musician and collaborator, Cristina has toured extensively with the Bang On a Can “All Stars”, and has performed with the Seattle Chamber Players, the Mabou Mines Theater Com-pany, the Parsons Dance Company, and Antares. She has also been a featured performer on both the Seattle Symph-ony’s Chamber Series and similar series. Cristina has ap-peared as concerto soloist with the Johns Hopkins Sym-phony Orchestra, the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Seattle Philharmonic, the Eastman BroadBand, and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she perform-ed the piano solo part of the Ives 4th Symphony with the Seattle Symphony, which was released on CD earlier this year to critical acclaim.! A pre-concert chat is offered on Sun., Nov. 13 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeper-formingarts.org, by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA. Each youth receives free admission when accom-panied by a paying adult.
