Cosmetic dentistry has long been the norm in the States and we are now seeing a growth in people this side of the Atlantic turn their attention towards their pearly whites.

Award winning local dental surgeon Dipesh Parmar from Acorn Implant & Dental Practice (AIDP) on Swanshurst Lane helps us to understand a bit more about this non invasive way of dramatically improving the way we look.

Dipesh is the youngest ever, and the only dentist in the West Midlands to have won in his category in the annual national competition, the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.

He explains: “With increasing development in materials and technology, the modern ways of cosmetically improving the appearance of your smile are orthodontic treatment, tooth whitening and cosmetic bonding, also known as white or composite fillings. In some situations, the traditional method of veneers and crowns may be more suitable.”

Orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment allows the improvement of your smile by moving your teeth to where

they should be. The biggest advantage of orthodontic treatment is that your teeth do not need to be drilled, and provided the retainer is worn, repeated dentistry is not required.

Also known as braces, there are two basic orthodontic appliances – fixed and removable. Traditionally, the fixed type have been metal braces and removable braces were only able to achieve small tooth movements.

With modern technology and advancements, clear and tooth-coloured fixed braces, and new ‘invisible’ removable orthodontic appliances are available.

White/Composite Fillings

There is so much more to white fillings than meets the eye it is hard to know where to begin. There are multiple colours and shades so that they can perfectly match your own with minimal tooth removal.

Smile!

6

AFTER

When teeth are broken or badly decayed, composite fillings, as they are known in dentistry, are a better alternative to a crown or veneer in many instances for a number of reasons:

• less of your natural tooth needs to be cut or drilled away

•the nerve is less likely to be damaged – hence less chance of pain

• it is often cheaper

•you will need fewer appointments

•they are easier and cheaper to repair

• it is often a more reversible procedure (once you have a crown there is no going back)

Skilled dentists can build up broken or badly decayed teeth gradually, using composite fillings, to make a tooth that perfectly blends in. Old fillings in the back or the front of the mouth can be made to look completely natural in this way too.

Teeth Whitening

This is a simple procedure that will give your smile an instant lift. There is no harm to the tooth, no injections, and no side effects.

Firstly, moulds are taken of your teeth and special bespoke ‘trays’ are made. You use these at home, and wear them with the special bleaching gel for a few hours each day for two

weeks to get the process started. After which you have a session in the surgery to complete the procedure. And voila, a dazzling smile!

Veneers

Veneers can change the colour, shape, size and sometimes the position of your teeth to help improve your smile.

Dipesh really favours cosmetic bonding, or composite fillings as his preferred method of treatment as it is less invasive, but in some cases veneers are the best option to go for.

Dipesh said: “When a patient seeks our expertise because they do not like the appearance of their smile, we do a full cosmetic consultation. This includes a general oral health examination, xrays, photographs and moulds. A treatment plan is then drawn up, specific for that patient addressing their concerns. We have multiple examples of work undertaken at AIDP to illustrate to patients what is achievable and often we can also do digital simulations.”

If you are interested in finding out how you can improve your smile then please contact Acorn Implant & Dental Practice on 0121 777 1537 to make an appointment.

De-cluttering tips from the expertDe-cluttering your wardrobe gives you space for this season’s ‘must haves’ and if you take your unwanted good quality clothing along to Encore you can turn it into cash.

Encore owner Christine Timms has thirty years experience in the fashion industry and has some helpful advice:

•If you haven't worn it for 12 months - let it go

•If it doesn't fit you any more - let it go

•If you have replaced it with the latest version - let it go

•Now is a good time to take in your unwanted autumn/winter clothes and party dresses

Items must be in excellent condition. Encore will review, price and sell them in the store. Then you get 50% of the sale price.

Encore is a designer boutique in Moseley specialising in pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories for men and women.

Do you have a passion for natural beauty products?Would you like to have a second income?

If your answer is yes to both of the above then it couldn’t be simpler. Local girl Abbie Iles, age 21, is a shining example of how to combine entrepreneurial flair with a passion for beauty products.

Abbie is an independent consultant for the US based, Swiss formulated, premier natural skincare company, Arbonne, as well as being a student and working part time in a beauty salon.

For just a £54 joining fee and £15 for her first samples she was up and running. And with the women’s ‘kit’ she was ready to make a flying start to her new business.

Much of Abbie’s business is through word of mouth, starting from her network of friends, who then recommend her to their friends and so on.

The key to the success of this business is in the quality of the products and the personality of the consultant.

Arbonne products are recognised nationally as being in the same league as La Priarie and

have been endorsed by Vogue magazine on a number of occasions. However, you won’t find them on the shelves of any shop. They are purely sold through consultants like Abbie.

Arbonne produces skincare products for women, men and babies and also includes a spa range, cosmetic range and suncare and health and wellness range. The products are botanically based, made with all natural ingredients, PH balanced, hypo-allergenic, dermatalogically tested, and are certified vegan.

If you are interested in starting up your own business with unlimited potential on a shoestring budget then give Abbie a call and she will be able to help. She will provide you with all the training you need and get you up and running for no extra cost other than purchasing the products themselves.

You can contact Abbie on 07850 430 121 or [email protected]

Hiya kids, well the nights are drawing in, aren't they? The conkers will soon be on the trees – it’s all part of “The Circle of Life” (have you seen the film? Wasn’t his uncle horrible to him?)

I don’t mind it getting a bit Autumnal, as for the first time in years we have had a summer.

I don’t know about you but I thought it was a belting year for growing things. My caulis were tip-top and I am thrilled to bits with my courgettes - which just keep on coming!

I was on the bus the other day and I heard the phrase guaranteed to dampen even the lightest of spirits: “It’ll soon be Christmas.”

Determined to break the habit of a lifetime - and not let the season of goodwill reduce me to a quivering wreck that only a small Baileys with ice can revive - I have started to get my presents sorted early. All life is ying and yang - feng and shui - Starsky and Hutch, and in a way this awful recession is also a good thing as it’s making us shop more locally and be a bit more creative. A bit more ‘make do and mend.’ So this year it’s Courgette Jam all ‘round I reckon.

PS: Talking about being creative - can the person who has drawn a goatee beard on my face on the

“Do it on line “ advert on the No 50 see me about a mural I fancy having done on my back wall?

Byzantium in Kings Heath has built up an enviable reputation as one of our finest places to go for an evening meal in the area. But did you know they are now open for lunch too?

As soon as I found this out I was itching for an excuse to go and so went with a good friend for lunch there last week, and what a treat.

We were met with a very warm welcome from the new owners Efua and her Italian husband Antonello who now run the restaurant, balancing it with the management of their vineyard and spumante production business in Italy. They plan to have their ‘De Lamis’ spumante on the menu in time for Christmas.

The lunch menu is lighter and simpler than the evening’s indulgent array of Mediterranean and North African tapas. There is a choice of a few tapas dishes alongside home-made soups, salads, pasta dishes and flat-bread sandwiches made with home baked bread. And if you just want to pop in for coffee and cake they have some truly lovely looking home made cakes and pastries.

For our lunch we ordered a few tapas to nibble on; the flatbread with the hummus and zalouk aubergine dip. And to really spoil ourselves for drinks we had a Bellini and a Tintoretto – spumante spritzers mixed with peach juice and cranberry juice.

For our main course we chose the couscous salad with grilled Mediterranean vegetables and the tomato and mozzarella salad. Both were really delicious and left us feeling a little virtuous after our flatbread and dip starter.

We had just enough time to finish off with really good cappuccinos and were treated to some new pastries they were trialling. Sfogliatella have a crisp finish with a hazelnut chocolate centre, an Italian version of pain au chocolat if you like. Simply melt in the mouth.

This is a great place for a quick bite to eat, a meal out with the kids, or as I had a slightly longer more decadent lunch with a girlfriend. The prices are reasonable and the place has a lovely feel to it.

Street art murals are transforming the urban spaces of Kings Heath and Moseley.

In recent years street art has gained the recognition it deserves, led by artists like Banksy who have succeeded in changing perceptions of graffiti art. In Kings Heath and Moseley we are lucky to be surrounded by street art that celebrates our community.

Around the Meteor Ford site in Moseley stands a serene mural of silhouetted trees created this summer by renowned artist, Mohammed Ali, and funded by Moseley Farmers’ Market and Tesco.

In Kings Heath, look out for the Farmers’ Market mural behind All Saints Community Centre. Vibrant and comical, this work was painted by Kings Heath native, street-artist, Hoakser.

Further down the high street, Hoakser continues to work on the new ‘Welcome to Kings Heath’

mural on the side of Mariano’s Cornish Café. The landmark piece was funded by and is part of Espirito Brum Cultural Exchange Festival. Over August, Brazilian artist, Ficore collaborated with Hoakser on the painting, which consists of postcard-style-snapshots of Kings Heath life.

‘As this is the first big public piece of legal graffiti on the high street, I thought it was important that it appealed to as many people as possible’ Hoakser states.

“ And street art,” he explains, “has got everybody talking. I have met so many people whilst working on that piece, had hours of conversation, made a friend in Brazil, been thanked by passersby, bought drinks by strangers... everyone seems to appreciate having the mural here.”

Christmas Play Local

If it’s a bit of drama and escapism you’re after this festive season, then there’s no need to go too far afield, with a whole variety of theatre for all ages on your doorstep.

If you fancy yourself as an amateur sleuth, don your trench coat and grab your magnifying glass for a Murder Mystery Dinner and Christmas disco at Highbury Hall on 6th December. Hunt for clues and interrogate the witnesses to see if you can solve the crime. Afterwards, with the murderer safely behind bars, you can bust some arresting moves on the dance floor. The £38.50 ticket includes a three course meal.

For more family-friendly festive fantasy, the mac is playing host to two Christmas shows this season: ‘The Snow Dragon’ is for ages 3 and over, and takes you into a magical, mysterious world of comedy and song from 26th November to 8th December. ‘Hansel and Gretel’ adapts the classic fairytale with live music and clowning, for ages 5 and over, from 3rd to 14th December. Both also have accompanying workshops available, and tickets range from £9 to £13.50.

And it wouldn’t be Christmas without our uniquely strange British tradition of pantomime, but leave the kids at home for this one! Brought to you by irreverent performers, the Dirty Old Folkers, ‘Old Mother Goose’ is strictly for adults and will be followed by a Christmas sing-along. Catch it at the Kitchen Garden Cafe on 16th December, or at the Hare & Hounds on 21st and 23rd, both on York Road in Kings Heath. Tickets are between £10 and £12.

Also look out for comedian Tank Sherman at Highbury Hall on 12th December and a special Christmassy Storytelling Cafe at the Kitchen Garden Cafe on 18th December.

Booking in advance is recommended for all of the above events.

Keeping it local this ChristmasWhy not take some of the hassle out of Christmas at the same time as supporting your local high street this year?

Internet shopping is always hit and miss and you end up paying delivery charges on even the smallest items. The city centre is too busy and parking costs a small fortune.

On the other hand, Moseley and Kings Heath high streets are overflowing with delightful independent shops selling toys and gifts for all the family. Parking is inexpensive and if you live close enough you can even walk or cycle.

From cards and wrapping paper, Christmas trees, wreaths and mistletoe, to gifts for all the family, we have it all here on our doorstep.

And for fresh locally produced food, Moseley and Kings Heath both have outstanding farmers’ markets, and the Moseley one includes a craft and arts market in the run up to Christmas

for unusual handcrafted gifts. Also, look out for the reindeer in the Moseley Christmas market. See the ‘What’s On’ page for dates.

If you are planning a celebratory meal out with your family, friends or co workers this festive season, then you need look no further than Moseley and Kings Heath with our enviable choice of outstanding restaurants and cafés.

Your Christmas pound can make all the difference to local businesses this year, and you can get some unique and special gifts, eat fabulous food, and generally enjoy the Moseley / Kings Heath vibe.

Creating A Financial Legacy for your FamilyRaising a child is a costly business - nappies, clothes, pocket money and school trips are just the tip of the iceberg. The results of a survey have indicated that by the time your child has reached 21 you will have spent an average of £218,000 on their upbringing (Source: www.mailonline.co.uk, January 2012).

It doesn’t get any easier once they reach adulthood age. The chances are high that they will need financial help to fund a gap year, or to get a foot on the property ladder.

But looking after your children doesn’t end when they start carving out a career and have a family of their own. In all likelihood you will want to create a financial legacy to ensure that the wealth you have created is preserved, protected and passed on to them.

Preserving as much of your wealth as possible requires careful estate planning; otherwise you may not pass on as much wealth as you anticipate. Inheritance tax (IHT), which is just one barrier to the transfer of wealth, is a 40 per cent tax imposed on the worldwide estate of anyone who is UK-domiciled on all assets above the nil rate band of £325,000.

The nil rate band can be passed to a surviving spouse, if not used, increasing the survivor’s nil rate band to up to £650,000. The threshold is normally updated each year in the Budget, in line with inflation, but the Coalition has said that it will now be frozen until April 2015.

If you are saving on behalf of your child or children it makes sense to ensure that the method used is as tax-efficient as possible – and to start as early as possible. A Junior ISA offers parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends the opportunity to invest regular contributions or lump sums on behalf of a child in a flexible and tax-efficient way. Replacing the Child Trust Fund, the Junior ISA provides the same tax advantages as a standard ISA; tax-efficient

interest on cash deposits, no further liability to income tax on dividends and no capital gains tax. Of course, the favourable tax treatment for Junior ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Setting up a pension for a child (you are allowed to invest a maximum of £3,600 gross a year on their behalf) is one of the most efficient financial gifts you can make. You get tax relief on the contribution and the child benefits from tax-free growth. Because the money is invested over such a long term – up to 55 years or more – you have the luxury of taking a unique long view on the investment strategy, which presents the opportunity to really go for maximum returns.

On top of all this, if your child is financially dependent on you, you need to make sure you have adequate provisions in place to replace your income in the event of death, illness or disability.

Being a parent brings with it rich rewards, from watching your children walk their first steps, to applauding them when they walk on stage to collect their graduation scroll. But such rich rewards do not have to be only emotional; they can be real too, with a little foresight and some expert financial help.

Feedback proves fruitful for RuksanaSPARKBROOK resident Ruksana Begum picked up a cheque for £500 after filling in a feedback form at a Kings Heath opticians.

The Birmingham University chemistry degree student visited Specsavers at 132 High Street back in July for an eye examination. After her visit she was emailed a customer feedback form which she filled in and returned. She was then picked at random from more than 90,000 respondents across the whole country to receive her cash prize.

Miss Begum says, ‘I decided to switch my opticians, so this was my first visit to Specsavers. I was so impressed with the service that I wanted to give them my feedback. I’ve never won anything like this before, and the money is certainly going to be useful – helping towards my study costs.’

Peter Squire, store director at Specsavers Kings Heath, says, ‘We’re thrilled for Ruksana. To have been picked from respondents across the whole country is just fantastic and I’m sure she will put the money to good use.’

For more information or to book an eye examination, visit Specsavers at 132 High Street, Kings Heath or call 0121 441 1322.

More than law It’s all change at Edgbaston-based law firm Tyndallwoods Solicitors but business as usual too.

Whilst clients will see the same level of service and support, behind the scenes there has been a change in how the company is run.

In August, Tyndallwoods was authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an Alternative Business Structure (or ABS), which in simple terms has enabled the ownership of the company to be shared between eight senior lawyers and managers.

Chairman Judy Dyke said; “This means a lot to us because we have been able to recognise the energy and enthusiasm of a new generation of colleagues.

“We want our clients to know that we are moving with the times, investing in quality systems and processes, but we are holding on to our traditional values with a continued commitment to offering an outstanding service.”

Solicitor Clare Martin TEP said; “This is a great move for the company and a great move for me

too. I get a lot of job satisfaction working in a firm where client care is such a priority. It gives me the chance to take time to get to know clients and their families throughout the generations.”

Tyndallwoods can trace its history back over 220 years being founded in the late 1700s, and Judy follows in her father’s footsteps heading up the firm.

Tyndallwoods is very active with local charities, with Judy a patron of Edward’s Trust and St Mary’s Hospice, and Clare, a patron of Edward’s Trust. They also support OHMI the One Handed Musical Instrument project and Children in Need.

More recently, Managing Director Martin Dyke has become involved in the very topical bee crisis by training as a bee keeper and installing a top bar bee hive on the grounds. To cap it all, the firm plants trees in Thailand which enables the firm to be carbon neutral.

Making Magical MemoriesPhotographs are how we remember important events, long after the memories fade. If you’re having trouble choosing someone to capture your big day, Charles Davis from Professional Photography has five top tips.

1. Get the picture. Take time looking through photographers’ portfolios and think about what you want from your own pictures. If you’re after informal, reportage-style snaps, then choose a photographer whose work shows their ability to capture those spontaneous, one-off moments.

2. Know what you want. The more a photographer understands what you like, the more chance they have of meeting, and exceeding your expectations. What balance of formal and informal pictures do you want? Will one photographer be enough? What about a temporary studio for more formal shots? Which part of the event is most important? Be as specific as possible.

3. Time is of the essence. Ask the photographer about their planning and preparation. A good photographer will want to check out the venue in advance to identify the best settings and vantage points. They’ll also want to discuss the schedule with you and to spend time talking through what you want.

4. Get cheeky! Wedding officials and ministers from all faiths usually have an opinion about when to take photographs and where a photographer should stand, but this may not be the right time and place to get the best shot of the happy couple. It’s important to be respectful but, whatever the event, a photographer who is willing to get into a little bit of trouble for their client may well deliver the best results.

5. Raising a smile. Many people feel self-conscious when there’s a photographer lurking, but if they can put people at ease and bring out the best in your guests, then the memories captured will be the happiest ones.

If you would like to discuss photography for your wedding you can contact Charles Davis on 07824 444 487.

Would you like to see tax as an inflow rather than an outflow of money from your business?

Well, if you are involved in any kind of research and development resulting in an altered or a new product, then tax advisors Bloomer Heaven have some good news for you.

You could be entitled to a whopping 225% tax relief on all costs relating to research and development, according to Chris Barlow, director at city centre based Bloomer Heaven.

“These costs can include product expenses such as materials, as well as the cost of services such as heating and lighting, and that most valuable commodity of all, time,” he said.

“Often business owners do not even realise they are entitled to this surprisingly generous form of tax relief. But if they are doing something as simple as making a recipe for mayonnaise healthier, this could be classed as research and development, and they may be entitled to the relief.

“The key is to be able to prove that a product has been taken from one state to another via a process that has involved change. The costs of it going wrong can even be included, as long as there is a successful finished product at the end of the process.

“This is a largely unknown form of tax relief, that is hugely beneficial to a diverse range of

industries. To successfully claim this form of tax relief it is vital to provide the information to HMRC in a specific format. At Bloomer Heaven we have a wealth of experience in this area, having completed claims for businesses in the automotive, general manufacturing, food production, medical products, scientific instruments, software and paper industries.”

Combining live performance and film footage, singer and television personality Isla St Clair will present this delightfully nostalgic, poignant and humorous look at the effects of music in wartime.

Cramar Cat Rescue and Sanctuary charity is increasingly busy rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing cats and kittens throughout the West Midlands.

Isla will perform a selection of songs ranging from Napoleonic times, through to the popular hits that were born out of two world wars and the 1950s.

They do invaluable work in the community and Judy Dyke at Tyndallwood’s own beloved cat Smokey is a Cramar cat. Smokey’s distinguishing feature is that she lost one third of her tail following a car accident - happily this has not affected her balance and indeed she is now a celebrity as she features in the firm’s literature.

Judy was pleased to receive the Cramar Mewsletter recently which highlighted in the Trustees Report the importance of legacies to funding the wonderful work of Cramar. She keeps copies of the Cramar Legacy Appeal in her office for clients who are cat lovers to consider when they are making their Wills.

Music with Isla St Clair in Kings Heath

Cat rescue

Joining Isla is film maker Patrick King who will give a fascinating and humorous behind-the-scenes look at the making of their award winning documentary films.

Using film clips they illustrate how songs and music played an important part in people’s daily lives: for boosting morale, propaganda or just reminding people of better times during some of the darkest days in our history.

This exciting event is on Thursday 10 October at 7.30 pm at All Saints Church, corner of High Street and Vicarage Road Kings Heath.

Tickets are £10 in advance from Des or Sheila on 0121 443 5292 or the welcome desk at the All Saints Centre. There will be a licensed bar.

To find out more about the wonderful work of the charity please telephone 0121 445 1840 or visit their website www.cramarcats.org.uk

The quality of the air we breathe is something we barely think about these days with other environmental issues and concerns being much more prevalent.

However, poor air quality is still a really big problem which is where Friends of the Earth’s ‘Let’s Get Moving’ campaign comes in.

As traffic is the biggest cause of poor air quality, it should be easier for people to choose to walk and cycle; ways of getting about that produce no toxic emissions and have many health benefits.

Friends of the Earth is calling for the City Council to build on the recent central grant for cycling by securing even greater investment to really tackle air pollution.

They will also be trying to help make cycling that little bit better themselves, raising money with their second comedy gig, ‘Pedalling for Laughs’ at the Glee Club.

Last year they raised £1,000 for bee-friendly projects; this year, on 20 November, they

are hoping to do even better and raise even more money to fund local cycling projects.

There is a fantastic line-up of comedians including: the fabulously funny Barbara Nice, and Adam Kay, front man of legendary Amateur Transplants, as well as James Cook, Stella Graham, and Steve Day.

So for a great night of fantastic comedy in support of cycling projects in Birmingham, get your tickets from The Warehouse, 54-57 Allison Street, or log onto www.glee.co.uk. Tickets are £12 with student, early bird and group discounts available. More details: bit.ly/pedallingforlaughs

You can also get involved in the campaign in other ways, find out more at www.get-moving.org.uk

On 7th August 2013, national play day, three busy streets in Kings Heath (Goldsmith Road, Albert Road and Woodville Road) were closed. Why? For children like me to play.

Again “why?” you may ask. “Haven’t children got back gardens? Can’t they just go to the park?” However, as you will know, it is much more fun to play together than alone. Street play is all about getting to know your community and truthfully, I can guess how many people that you know and are friends with on your street and know that that number is not very big.

Play is a tremendous part of being a child and everybody should have the opportunity to, whether that’s playing tag outside or just chatting with your friend. One of the main things that stops us from doing this is cars. But what if there weren’t any cars...

Two words: street play. During the day, nothing was seen on the roads except people having fun and taking part in interactive activities. One of which, and probably my favourite, was “music shakers,” involving dancing, singing songs and playing with coloured scarves. Other activities included clay, bubbles and art and craft.

It was organised by the various local communities and families, keen to help street play, supported by ‘Parks for Play’, Hall Green Arts Forum and Birmingham City Council. The day as a whole was really fun and friendly, and I hope we do it again soon!!!

A COMMUNITY scheme launched by police officers in Kings Heath, Birmingham, is causing a ‘stir’ with local shoppers.

For the past six months, visitors to Kings Heath High Street have been able to pop into the Pear Tree Pub on a Monday from 9am until 10am and have a ‘cuppa’ with PC Andy Collis while discussing local concerns and crime trends.

The early morning meetings have been extremely well received in the community, with dozens of shoppers popping in on a regular basis.

Issues discussed in the first six months have included anti-social behaviour, speeding motorists and safety on the high street. Visitors have also been given crime prevention advice and assistance with property marking.

Last month PC Collis was also joined by Jo and Sparky from Free Radio for a ‘cuppa’ and a chat about the scheme, that was originally set up in February.

The presenters were recording a segment with PC Collis for their radio show as part of an on-air A to Z of the city. They discussed the scheme at length and the segment will be aired tomorrow (5 July) from 5pm.

PC Collis said: “The scheme has proven successful on Kings Heath High Street and the number of people attending continues to increase each and every week.

“It was great having Jo and Sparky join me for a ‘cuppa’ recently and I’ve had some really positive feedback from regulars who enjoy the relaxed environment in which they can discuss concerns.”
