Style, comfort and relaxing atmospheres can be created very affordably with a little ingenuity!

Bedrooms should be decorated in calm at relaxing colours if you want to get a good night’s sleep! They should also be neat and tidy, otherwise as you enter the room to sleep you mind will be bombarded with clutter and mess, which does not afford relaxation.

One of the most cost effective ways to decorate a bedroom is to paint it! A little time spent on appropriate DIY preparation will be well rewarded by the end result. Spend time filling it small dents and cracks using a ready to use filler, wait for it to dry before rubbing lightly with glass paper to give a smooth finish.

When painting over deep, dark colours or very intense bright primary colours, it will be advisable to give the walls a couple of coats of white or pale cream as a base coat.

This years muted tones in pantone yellow and sage greens are ideal colours to use in a bedroom. They provide a gentle and calming effect. Either of these colours look stunning when coordinated with crisp fresh white or pale creams. These colours also work well with natural wood, which can be either as a wood blind hung inside the recess of the window, as the accent pieces of furniture or stripped floor boards.

Tiled floors or stripped boards can look striking in a bedroom. They are both easy to keep dust free and provide texture to a room. Rather then placing rugs either side of a bed, placing a large rug partly

under the bottom half of the bed not only provides a warm surface to step onto, it will also provide a more unusual look to the room.

Keeping all clothes well out of sight is an absolute must! Use wardrobes and cupboards to store and hang clothes, above all make sure the doors are always kept closed on them! Nothing spoils the visual effect more than having piles of clothes strewn over the floor or half hanging out of drawers! Take a look at any interior design image-you will never see such things!

Bedrooms such also reflect personal interests with objects displayed on the tops of dressing tables and chests of drawers. However, these should not becoming a dumping ground for papers! You are trying to achieve a sense of harmony, not having items which remind you of things you haven’t completed, such as work.

If you like reading, place a pair of matching table lamps on the bedside tables. Having identical lamps can provide a sense of cohesive and har-mony to the room.

Place wall art above the bed head, although you won’t be able to see it when you are in bed, you will look at it every time you enter the room. The only exception to this is if you have an ornate headboard or contemporary bed which is the main focal point.

Bedding is extremely important. Ensure you have beautiful bedding which coordinates with the colour scheme of the room. Discount stores have some wonderful and very affordable bedding which will bring style to a bedroom. The number one rule is always make the bed! There is nothing more demoralising than walking into a bedroom which has an unmade bed. Psychologically there is nothing more relaxing than getting into a neat freshly made bed!

Because of the wide variety of designs, patterns, colors and sizes to choose from, it can be tiring for one to choose an area rug that could meet his or her preference. Trick is to narrow down the choices; consider one factor per factor. That way selecting the best area rug can be less confusing and stressful.

One of the aspects to consider when choosing an area rug is the size. Size matters, especially when it comes to decorating a room, whether at home or in the office. Along with size comes placement. Know where you are placing the rug and how it will function. You don’t want to choose a rug that is too small or yet again too big for your space. Rugs that measures 4 x 6, 3 x 5 and 2 x 3’s are standard rugs that are usually placed in rooms to accentuate furniture, beds or fireplaces. Standard rugs can also be used as a kitchen mat, bathroom carpet and can even be placed in doorways and corridors. Knowing where to place the rug can help you estimate what size to choose. Using a measuring tape and a temporary marker (like masking tape or post-its), calculate the size of the room or space. Imagine how you want to arrange the rug in that certain room. Place the markers in the four areas where you expect the corners of the rug to be positioned. Then measure the pretend rug’s

sides from corner to corner. That way when you go to the store to choose an area rug, you would have an idea on what size to go with.

Then again there are those spaces that would need rugs that are not available in pre made sizes. Nonetheless, design-wise, availability of rug choices tend to lessen as the preferred size increases. This is because standard-sized rugs are more undemanding and less time consuming to make than crafting larger area rugs. Luckily, some companies allow special orders to be made though it would take you weeks to get your rug. But the good thing with that is you could choose or customize the rug to whatever size and pattern you desire.

Whatever size you choose, it is still important that you are comfortable with the look and feel of the rug you are choosing. Ensure that the rug fits both the space and your standards perfectly.

Too many people, when decorating, underestimate the importance of getting the color right. color has tremendous power if used correctly and, if applied without appropriate forethought, can kill any decorating scheme stone-dead. Professional decorators make full use of the range of colors to achieve a contrast or a color match that enhances any scheme they are promoting. A particularly valuable tool is the color wheel which gives you access to literally thousands of color combinations, many of which you might never think would go together. However, regardless of any professional’s opinion, the first step to any decorating scheme is to choose the colors you like - after all, you’re the one who has to live with the finished result.

A color wheel identifies color families that relate to each other. All colors result from the primary colors which are blue, yellow and red. All other colors are combinations of these basic colors: as an example, if you want brown, you simply mix all three of the primary colors together in equal quantities. To obtain the secondary colors of violet, green and orange, you mix equal quantities of two primary colors together: red and blue produces violet; blue and yellow produces green; and red and yellow produces orange. To obtain tertiary colors you need to mix a larger quantity of one primary color with a smaller amount of another primary color: a reddish-violet is obtained through one part blue with two parts red.

In every color there is a hue and a tone so, for instance, if you have a light blue and a dark blue, blue is the hue. The importance of tone when organizing a color scheme for your decorating project cannot be emphasized enough. Tone represents the reflective quality of the color and its actual density. There is a color scale, graduating from white to black and a saturation scale which relates to a color’s boldness and purity. It is a well-known fact that color does affect mood. Warm shades give a feeling of strength and are considered to be cozy colors which radiate warmth in a room. Reds in different shades are now very popular colors for dining rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.

I am sure you wouldn’t want to walk into a room with all four walls decorated in pure orange - it would be a bit overpowering! Yellow, however, has different connotations depending on the shade, hue, tone and value. Pale yellow, such as primrose, is a very pleasant, soothing color for a room while bright yellow can aggravate. If it is feelings of trust you want to generate you need to choose the cool colors, such as a very soft green like mint green, or the color of celery. Blue can be used in any room of the house and always works. A light blue room always appears to be bright and refreshing, giving peaceful undertones. Dark blue will promote a more restrained mood. An atmosphere of serenity can be achieved with the color violet. This color is connected to romance and is becoming a popular choice for bedrooms and living rooms. Regardless of the color scheme, you do need to acknowledge the power of color - used correctly it creates the right mood. Wrong colors can have a completely adverse effect regardless of how carefully it is applied.

It is time to select your living room curtains and you are in a

panic. You have visited all the stores, viewed all the choices and

still don’t know what to choose. As with all design decisions,

there is no right or wrong choice. But there are some guidelines

that might make selecting your living room curtains a little bit

easier.

Style is one of the first things to consider. This will be determined by the style of furniture you have chosen, the size and shape of your windows and even the architecture of your home.The most common style of curtain is the pinch pleat drape. Fabric is gath-ered at the top of the drapery and “pinched” together creating a pleat. It is then attached to a curtain rod with a small metal clip at the back of the pleats. This treatment offers a full and luxurious look but can be expensive due to the amount of fabric needed.A less expensive option is the tab top curtain. In this style a tab of fabric simply loops over the curtain rod allowing the drape to hang to the floor. This look offers a casual and relaxed feel to a room.A contemporary version of the tab top drape would be the grommet top. Large grommets are placed at the top of fabric and a rod is woven through. A grommet is a hole in the fabric surrounded by a metal ring. Using this style in your room will create a clean and contemporary look.If you have a beautiful view from your windows and/or privacy is not an issue, hanging stationary panels might be a good choice for you. Panels of fabric are gathered together on a short rod and hung on either side of the window or door. They are not functional but add color and softness to a room.Rod pocket panels are a very inexpensive window treatment. A pocket of fabric is created at the top of the curtain and a rod is slipped through and

attached to the wall. They are generally held open with a tieback of some sort. This can be a matching piece of fabric attached to rings on the wall or something more decorative.Adding a “topper” to your curtains is something you will want to think about. This can be a simple ruffled valance that covers the rod to a more elaborate swag scarf look. Perhaps a tailored box cornice is more your style. Or maybe you want the beautiful wood or metal rod to show. This decision will be based on the type of curtain you have chosen and the overall design style of your living room.All of these styles are available off the rack, reducing the cost. But if you are looking to add creativity and uniqueness to your room there is nothing more beautiful than selecting living room curtains that have been custom tailored for your home.Budget is something we can’t ignore. As with all things, the amount you are able to spend will determine the type of curtain you choose.A curtain purchased off the rack that is unlined can be very inex-pensive. They are ready to hang and offer an immediate solution to any light or privacy issues you may have. However, they are often poorly made and will have to be replaced often. The color and pattern choices are limited.Conversely, curtains custom made for your windows in a fabric chosen by you and properly lined can be very costly. There can be a long delay in getting these made, leaving you without window treatments for a while. But the end result will be curtains that give your room a unique look and the custom workmanship, including lining, will allow you to enjoy these curtains for a long time.Lining your curtains is something to consider.If you live in an area that is prone to lots of cold weather you may want to add a thermal lining to your curtains. While this will add to the cost, it can reduce the amount of energy used in your home as well as add life to the curtains by protecting them from the sun.If you are fortunate to live in a sunny area, adding a cotton lining to your curtains will protect your fabric from the harsh rays of the sun. It can also help reduce the amount of sunlight entering the room, thereby protecting furniture and carpet from fading.However, living in a sunny area can make it difficult to sleep during the day. The bright light can create problems if you work nights or have a baby in the house. Often the light coming into the room can make it difficult to watch television. For these reasons, you may want to consider a blackout lining. These opaque linings keep out any unwanted light and while they will add to the cost of your living room curtains, the extra sleep may be worth the extra cost!Lastly, appearance is something to take into consideration. Lining adds body and weight to curtains, allowing them to hang properly. Your home will have a uniform look from the outside if all your curtains are lined.Window treatments can be a costly addition to any home but taking time to make the right choices when selecting your living room curtains will save you money in the long run. The end result will be a beautiful living room you can enjoy for years to come.

Steak, though a grill favorite, can be cooked in several other ways. It can be pan-fried, braised, broiled, baked, etc. Selecting the proper method for cooking steak depends on its tenderness. There are dry heat methods and moist methods. Dry heat methods are generally applied for more tender steaks such as filet mignon and sirloin, while moist heat methods are more suited to tougher cuts of beef. The water helps in tenderizing the steak.

The tenderness of cooked steak is influenced by how much it is ‘done’. Depending on the time for which the steak is cooked, it may be raw, very rare, rare, medium rare, medium, medium well-done and well-done. Rare steaks are exposed to the flame for a very short time. They still maintain their rawness and are very pink in color. Rarely done steaks maintain their original beefy flavors, but they are not very healthy as they still contain micro-organisms. As the cooking time increases, the pinkness of steak gets converted to brownness and its juiciness also reduces. Well-done steaks are brown throughout and also tough to chew. For ordinary palates, medium rare steaks are the best bets.

The best way to cook a steak is definitely grilling it. Everything matters while grilling a steak - the tenderness of steak, the marinade, the quality of the coal

and lighter fluid and even the concentration of the person cooking. Most steaks require about 8-10 minutes on the barbeque. The time will depend on the degree of doneness required.

Tender cuts can also be broiled. Broiling is done in the oven with no liquids used. It gives a different flavor from grilling as in an oven the heat surrounds the meat from all sides. Less tender cuts can also be broiled provided they are marinated earlier.

Thin and tender cuts of steak such as the sirloin, T-bone and rib-eye taste very well when they are pan-fried. Steaks are fried in an open pan placed over a flame. No oil is added. The steaks cook in their own fats.

If the cut of beef is bigger, then it is ideal for roasting. Roasting is also a dry heat cooking method that uses no liquid and no cover. Tender cuts roast better and they are to be sliced before serving.

Tough cuts of beef such as chuck, round, flank, briskets and blade are usually braised. Braising is a moist-heat cooking method done with a little amount of liquid in an oven with a closed lid. It is a slow process as it slowly allows the meat to tenderize.

Another method for tough cuts is stewing. Beef is completely covered in water and cooked slowly over a medium flame. Stewing is not a very popular method for steaks; but if the cut is large enough and tough, then it better be put into the stew pot.

In all the methods of cooking steak, the degree of doneness is measured by using a meat thermometer. However, by practice, one can also judge the doneness by merely touching the steak externally.

McRaePrep Time: 20 minutesMarinating Time: 8 hoursGrilling Time: 20 to 30 minutesPaste• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil• 2 tablespoons nely chopped fresh rosemary• 1 tablespoon nely chopped fresh thyme• 1 tablespoon minced shallots• 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar• 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard• 1 teaspoon minced garlic• 1 teaspoon kosher salt• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 2 racks of lamb, 1 to 1-1/2 pounds each, frenchedChutney• 1 cup sun-dried cranberries• 1/2 cup cranberry juice• 1/4 cup fresh orange juice• 2 tablespoons granulated sugar• 2 tablespoons cranberry jelly• 1/2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper• Pinch ground cinnamon

1. In a small bowl mix the paste ingredients. Spread the paste all over the lamb racks. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 8 hours.2. In a medium saucepan combine the chutney ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries are plump and juicy and the chutney has thickened, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.3. Loosely cover the bones of the racks of lamb with aluminum foil to keep them from burning. Grill over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F), with the lid closed as much as possible, until the internal temperature reaches 145°F and the lamb is medium rare, 20 to 30 minutes, turning once. Remove from the grill and allow to rest for 5 minutes before cutting into chops. Serve hot with the chutney.Makes 4 servings

from Weber’s Real Grilling™ by Jamie PurviancePrep Time: 10 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 6 to 8 minutes• 1/4 pound bacon (4 to 6 slices)• 1 teaspoon nely chopped fresh thyme• 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic• 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper• 1 pound asparagus• 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced crosswise

1. In a medium skillet over medium heat, lay the bacon in a single layer and cook until crispy, 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally. Drain the bacon on paper towels, reserving the bacon fat in the skillet.

2. Pour off all but 3 tablespoons of the bacon fat and return the skillet over medium heat. Add the thyme and garlic to the skillet and let them sizzle for about 10 seconds. Add the vinegar, salt, and pepper, and then remove the skillet from the heat.

3. Remove and discard the tough bottom of each asparagus spear by grasping each end and bending it gently until it snaps at its natural point of tenderness, usually 2/3 of the way down the spear. Using a vegetable peeler, peel off the outer skin from the bottom half of each remaining spear. Put the asparagus on a plate or platter. Pour the vinaigrette over the asparagus. Turn the asparagus to coat them evenly. Finely chop the drained bacon.

4. Grill the asparagus over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F) until browned in spots but not charred, 6 to 8 minutes, turning them occasionally. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling.Arrange the asparagus on a serving platter. Sprinkle the bacon over the asparagus. Arrange the onions on top. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Which comes first - the food or the wine? This is a common debate at the Forster dinner table. I met my husband, Chef Michael Forster, at a food and wine pairing class eight years ago and we have been discussing the topic ever since. When we go out to dinner, I like to first select the wine and then pick an entrée that works with my favorite wine. Michael instead thinks the food should come first and then the wine should be selected that enhances the dish. Just like any great relationship, we have both had to learn to balance and compromise to make these dining experiences fun for both of us. Understanding the concepts used for food and wine pairing can be quite similar to understanding the dynamics of personal relationships. Use the following tips to simplify your wine and food pairing decisions. These are the keys to creating the perfect match for your next meal.

• We have all heard the sayings “opposites attract,” or the converse, “complementary partners make the best matches.” Sound like relationship advice? Well it is, but these rules can also be used to create successful food and wine pairings. The Contrasting method uses diverse flavors to play off each other, e.g., when pairing a dry red wine with a New York strip steak, the steaks’ juiciness and the wines’ dryness counteract each other. The Complementary method matches flavors to enhance them, e.g., rich foods with rich wines or powerful foods with powerful wines. For instance, try pairing a seafood dish in a creamy sauce with a rich, buttery Chardonnay. The richness of the wine will add to that of the dish giving real “power” to the pairing.

• Don’t forget to match “like weights.” No, I am not talking about weight lifting, but rather matching the weight of the wine with the weight of the foods. Light fare with lighter bodied, more delicate wines, and fuller bodied, more intense wines with bigger foods. This is actually one of the food and wine concepts that is most intuitive. Most of us wouldn’t think to order a light, fruity Pinot Grigio with a New York Strip steak, or conversely, a glass of hearty Cabernet Sauvignon with a cold seafood salad. Compare it to choosing the right shoes for an outfit; Would you pick a strappy sandal for a conservative business suit? A chunky pump for a flowing floral number? Wine is an accessory that can really enhance your dining experience!

• Understanding the specific wine and flavor reactions that can occur will help in experimenting and creating your own perfect partners. Here are some key concepts:

*Salt lowers the perceived acid in wine. Acid in wine is that tangy or sour sensation you get on your tongue. Imagine biting a lemon that’s acid. Salty foods will need higher acid wines. Try tasting a pinch of salt with both a crisp, high acid Sauvignon Blanc and a mellow, lower acid Chardonnay. Notice how each change in the presence of the salt. The acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc will soften but the Chardonnay will most likely end up losing most, if not all of its flavor.

*Tannins in red wines are softened by animal fats in things like meat, cheese, and butter. Tannins, a naturally astringent substances found in grape skins, are also found in some foods like walnuts. Tannins are perceived in our mouths as a sense of dryness. Highly tannic wines can make you feel like you have instant cottonmouth. Try eating a bunch of walnuts or red grapes…you’ll end up getting the same sensation. Wines with firmer tannins are a natural pairing with fattier dishes likes red meats, cheeses or stews. Try a Cabernet Sauvignon that has firm tannins with a bite of steak and notice how it softens.

*Sweet wines tone down spicy foods whereas high alcohol dry wines will intensify the heat of spices. Try hot sauce with Moscato d’Asti (a sweet sparkler from Italy) or a slightly sweet Vouvray (a Chenin Blanc from France). Then try the same sauce with an oaky Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon. The first two wines will tone down the heat whereas the last two will make the food taste even spicier.

*High acid wines with high acid foods will create a neutralizing effect rather than intensifying the sourness. Try a Sauvignon Blanc with goat cheese. Separately each is quite acidic, but as a couple they are fabulous!

• What do you do if you want to order one wine to make everyone happy? Often, we are out with friends and ordering totally different food, but we want to share a bottle of wine. There are two grapes that are considered to be “universal” (meaning they can stand up to most food choices). These are dry Riesling and Pinot Noir. They both have the right combination of fruit and acid to complement a wide variety of cuisine.

Remember that the best food and wine pairing is the one YOU like best .. . forget charts, rules, or offending the sommelier. Just like you might not like the men your Mom wanted to set you up with, you might not like the wine suggested by your server or sommelier. So, how do you learn what you like? Taste, taste and taste some more. Consider ordering a few different glasses with each course or experimenting at home to see what you like. You’ll notice with a little practice, picking the perfect partner for any meal will come naturally!

Cola, alcohol, and fast food have all taken their toll on the overall health and fitness of the North American population, and now a full two thirds of the population is considered overweight or obese, with nearly ten percent of the population being morbidly obese.

The mere mention of a change in diet immediately instills fears of ultra-strict calorie pinching and meal planning, yet it does not have to be so. The right combination of foods, combined with moderate physical activity, is all that one needs to get back into shape and back on track with their health.

How Does Salmon Help You?The sheer number of advantages and good benefits which come from a steady intake of Salmon is quite remarkable, and experiencing them only involves a few minor changes to your diet. There is no calorie counting, food blocking, or madness-inducing starvation sessions involved with this diet modification, only the subtraction of three high-fat meals a week and the addition of three high-value meals which feature Salmon as the entree.

Incorporating Salmon Into Your DietThere are many sources of Salmon, such as fresh Salmon fillets or canned Salmon (similar to canned Tuna). As a general rule, you want to focus on fresh wild Salmon as opposed to farmed Salmon. There are many varieties of wild Salmon, though we have become particularly fond of the deep, rich taste from Alaskan Wild Salmon.

Replacing two or three high-fat meals with a Salmon based one every week is all it takes to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with Salmon. Like most things, there are thousands of different and creative ways to prepare Salmon, so search around for a recipe that tickles your taste buds.

Our particular favorite method of preparation is either grilling or poaching a six ounce fillet- try a few different methods and see which ones you love. If you are unsure of how to prepare Salmon, make an evening of it and go out to dinner to a restaurant which features it. Be sure to call ahead to confirm that the restaurant you have in mind has a Salmon based entree.

When everything is said and done, Salmon is a versatile, hard-working part of a healthy lifestyle. It can be prepared a million and one different ways, and it always tastes great. The best part, however, is knowing that you can enjoy Salmon without having to feel guilty.

If you like to look to the heavens even just occasionally get yourself some decent binoculars and indulge in a little binocular astronomy. Think about it, binoculars are inexpensive, highly portable and require no complicated setting up procedure so are ideal for casual astronomy.

Binoculars allow excellent moon views, and great viewing of star fields, comets and even deep sky objects. They are especially useful for beginners as unlike astronomy telescopes they keep the view the the right way up, making it really easy to navigate the skies. With a little practice you can pick out several of the planets and even the larger moons orbiting Jupiter. Clusters like Pleiades look great because the binoculars wide field of view lets you have more of the cluster in view at one time than a telescope would.

So how to choose which ones? Binoculars have two specifications marked on the body of the binocular in the form of 7x 50, where the first number represents the magnification (in this case 7 times) and the second the aperture in millimeters (50mm in this case). When it comes to selecting the right binoculars for astronomy, aperture is the most important feature to think about. The bigger the aperture the more light is captured so the brighter and clearer the image will be. For astronomy use you will need at least 40mm aperture and preferably larger.

You will need a magnification factor of at least 7, maybe up to 10 if you have a steady hand. Any higher than about 10 times magnification and you will need to mount your binoculars on a tripod as the hand shake effect makes it difficult to get a sharp image.

There are giant binoculars available with higher magnifications and apertures which are designed for astronomy use but you will certainly need a sturdy tripod or mount to use them. These can offer excellent viewing up to about 25 times magnification with

100mm apertures.

This brings us to another point, a specification known as the ‘exit pupil’. This specifica-tion refers to the diameter of the shaft of light that exits the eyepieces and into your eyes. You can easily calculate it by dividing the aperture by the magnification so that 7 x 50 binocular has an exit pupil of just over 7mm. Capturing as much of that as pos-sible is good as it means all the available light is getting to where you want it, i.e.your eye. If you are still in your twenties you can probably use all of that 7mm exit pupil mentioned above as your pupils will dilate to about that size in very dark conditions, however as you get older your pupil does not dilate more than about 4 to 5 mm so large exit pupils are wasted (though it starts to make those 25x 100’s look good!).

You might notice another specification marked on the binocular, the field of view (FOV), it refers to the apparent side to side view as you look through the binoculars. It will be expressed as an angle in degrees or a measure such as 340 feet at 1000 yards. For astronomy use we can generally ignore that factor, it really does not matter a great deal at the distances we’ll be viewing at.

So now you have the basics why not get yourself some binoculars and indulge in a little casual astronomy, you’ll be rewarded with some wonderful sights!

Dear Friends ;

Over 100 years ago when the early residents of Melville along with officials from Grande Trunk railway sat down to lay out a town site, which was to be a railway turnaround point as well as other things. They also did something much different than many communities of the time; they chose a spot for a covered ice surface to be part of this growing and thriving community. Within a short period of time a hockey rink was built and Melville had a regular hockey team. Two world Wars later as well as two major fires later Melville still kept hockey alive and well in the community. In fact in 2008 when Melville celebrated its 100 anniversary; players and volunteers from close to a century of hockey also assembled in Melville, within the confines of the new Stadium to celebrate the highs and lows of one hundred years of hockey in the community.

Many of those who hadn’t been around for awhile were happy to not only see the old stadium in relatively good shape. But also they were happy to hear that our City fathers of the day as well as local residents were laying the beginnings of not only a new ice surface but also a gathering place for the citizens of Melville to be named “The Melville Communiplex”! This state of the art Communiplex should not only be a great 1500 seat hockey surface for all our minor hockey teams but also our beloved Melville Millionaires of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. When phase 1 is completed in January 2011 it will also house a 500 seat multi-purpose convention centre. A three lane walking track with rubberized flooring. A family fitness centre complete with cardio equipment and weight training equipment. Also a public meeting place will be available for rent and full concession needs for all events.

Just as I am sure it was difficult in the past for the community to raise funds every time they built a covered ice surface, this endeavour was no different. Setting your sites on a 26-27 million dollar facility just as a recession was gripping North America, was at a minimum a scary undertaking. However early this year our Provincial and Federal governments came through with a 24 million announcement, to the excitement of the

City of Melville. Coupling that money with donations from our local citizens through the thousand for a thousand club, plus various community donations has made the work of the fund-raising group a lot easier. None the less they still undertook a major community radio auction on local radio station GX 94 radio, It was so successful that I understand the Group is taking bookings for next year already.

As Economic Development manager and acting Tourism Manager for this community, It is great to be part of these exciting times, however we all believe that there is more to come. Babcock and Wilcox are very prominent in our community and are working hard to secure work for their expedient work force. As well CN has always been a dominant force in our community and we don’t see that letting up anytime soon. Almost weekly we have visits from major players in the business or hospitality industry looking at calling Melville home.

In the coming weeks I want to use this space to discuss more of the good things coming to our community in the near future. So please stay tunned.

Northern pike are most often olive, shading into yellow to white along the belly. The flank is marked with short, light bar-like spots and there are a few to many dark spots on the fins. The lower half of the gill cover lacks scales and they have large sensory pores on their head and on the

underside of the lower jaw which are part of the lateral line system. Unlike the similar-looking and closely related

muskellunge, the northern pike has light markings on a dark body background and fewer than six sensory pores

on the underside of each side of the lower jaw.

Pike grow to a relatively large size; lengths of 150 centimetres (59 in) and weights of 25 kilograms (55 lb) are

not unheard of.
