Metadata Services Goal

Within three years, services provided under OCLC’s Metadata program will transform OCLC’s traditional cataloging service to a comprehensive metadata creation and management service for librarians, library users and information partners.

Page 11: OCLC Product Strategy

Megatrends for Metadata

The overall demand for quality metadata has dramatically increased

The number of libraries requiring authoritative electronic metadata continues to increase worldwide

A large number of library professionals (40-50%) are eligible for retirement in the next ten years. Professional catalogers in particular are not being developed in library schools to take their place.

Page 12: OCLC Product Strategy

Working Objectives

Provide access to more metadata resources

Improve the productivity of metadata creation

Continue to play a major role in standards

Provide library staff with more efficient tools

Cooperative Reference Services What?

– A service suite that will enable libraries to provide Web-based, interactive reference services locally and network those services with other OCLC libraries

Components– A network of subject experts – Cooperative services (eg, shared profile/knowledge base)– Local services for deploying a Web-based reference desk

Current projects– CDRS (www.loc.gov/cdrs)– Incolsa Pilot, Metro Pilot
