Historic Seattle’s “Digging Deeper” program comes to Redmond Historical Society on Saturday, August 13. See page 7.

We’ve added a date to the historic Walking Tours: Sunday, August 14. See page 10.

Thanks to new “lifetimer” Maj. Larry O. Sundholm, USAF, Ret. Larry attended 1st through 3rd grade at Redmond Elementary School and graduated from Kirkland High School (now Lake Washington High School) in 1956.

His grandfather, Otto Sundholm, homesteaded in Redmond, and his family lived on what was once the Joe Heiser place on the Old Red-Brick Road. Otto donated several items to the museum at Marymoor Park, including an old fire pump.

Larry lives in Spokane, WA with his wife Rebecca, originally from Yakima. An avid musician and singer, Larry took his first music lesson on the piano accordion, in a Kirkland studio on Lake Washington in 1947. He also plays violin, fluegelhorn, trombone, and French horn. Currently he plays chamber music with a woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, bassoon, and clarinet, French horn), and enjoys singing tenor in a barbershop quartet.

Larry has been a Redmond Historical Society member since 2008.

501 Commons is a nonprofit organization with the mission to boost the capacity of other nonprofit organizations to thrive over the long term and effectively serve the community. The Redmond Historical Society has entered into a management consulting agreement with 501 Commons at a nominal fee; they in turn provide a service grant of $3,375 as an in-kind donation. We appreciate their generous contribution.

President’s notebook

Volunteers, now hear this: Thank you all for supporting the Redmond Historical Society.

The Redmond Historical Society Picnic in June was for fun, renewing acquaintances, and camaraderie. It was also about recognizing and honoring our many dedicated volunteers. Volunteers are an important engine of the Society. Many people support the work of the Society through membership, additional financial support and especially volunteer hours. We couldn’t be the Society we are without all you give, whether it’s dollars or time, or in many cases, both. Thank you.

The Redmond Historical Society is blessed by the level of community support we receive, evidenced by our more than 270 members and a host of volunteers. The list with the two columns tells the story. At least 76 of you have given time and talent to the Society, ranging from those who work in Collections to those who assist in production of the Saturday Speaker Series programs.

Consider these numbers: • For 2015, volunteers reported

3,997 hours contributed, for an in-kind donation value of $110,077.

• For the first 5 months of 2016, volunteers have reported 1,580 hours contributed, for an in-kind donation value of over $45,800.

Join the fun. We have key volunteer opportunities available for those with leadership skills, and the desire to make a difference in our community. The next largest group of volunteers is our marvelous Board of Directors, included in the numbers above. The Board is where responsibility and accountability meet accomplishment and results achieved. Our Board makes it all happen. Board Members are listed on page 2 of this newsletter.

Thank you, thank you all!

Coldwell Banker Bain loan officer Bliss Ong has formed a unique partnership with the Redmond Historical Society in an effort to help raise money for the Society.

Coldwell Banker Bain will give 10% back to support the Redmond Historical Society when you or someone you refer is looking to buy or sell property. Ask Bliss Ong or the society for details.

Coldwell Banker Bain established its Community Partnership program as a way for the company and its brokers to give back to the organizations that are committed to the welfare of our communities. Since the program was created in 1988, Coldwell Banker Bain brokers have donated more than $1.59 million to over 650 nonprofit organizations in Western Washington.

In the March Redmond Recorder, I asked if anyone knew anything about an automobile graveyard on Cleveland Street shown in this 1950 aerial of Redmond. Larry Barker and his sister Judy responded. They explained that their father Clarence Barker established a wrecking yard on that site between 1941 and 1942. Clarence took in the cars or trucks and parted them out. During World War II vehicle parts were hard to obtain. Because Clarence had a large stock of all makes and models people would come from surrounding areas and even other states to get a part. Radiators were particularly important. Larry and Judy remembered customers would come at all hours of the day and night looking for a specific part. Clarence always helped them out, regardless of the hour. The building near the middle of the wrecking yard was the yard office. The Barkers lived across Cleveland next to the Stone House. Clarence operated the wrecking yard until 1953/1954 when he moved it five miles east of town on the Redmond-Fall City road.

Redmond Historical Society will host Historic Seattle’s Digging Deeper program. Digging Deeper is Historic Seattle’s multi-session program designed to provide attendees with behind-the-scenes insight to primary research materials in the many archives and libraries in Seattle and King County. Each month a different archive or library provides expert advice as to what is available and how staff can assist with research projects. This program helps you to explore buildings, architecture, and history.

On Saturday August 13, Redmond Historical Society will provide an introduction to its collection, which includes historical documents, pictures, artifacts, oral histories, newspapers, maps, and surveys. The Redmond Historical Society was founded in 1999 by a small of group of citizens passionate about our local history. It has grown extensively since then and has built a vast collection of materials about Redmond, including over 30,000 online records. An overview of their collections can be found on their website using the Collections tab.

Jlean McDonald, Collections Manager, Crystal Rojas Mora, Vice President of Collections, and Joe Townsend, President of the Society, will provide an overview of the collection as well as a tour of their offices located inside the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center.

Tom Hitzroth, Local Historian and Chair of City of Redmond Landmark Commission, will offer an optional walking tour of Redmond’s historic center immediately following the program. $10 suggested donation. For more information about the walking tour, please inquire at [email protected].

Visit historicseattle.org to purchase tickets for the Digging Deeper program. Registration will close prior to the program date, so purchase your tikets early. Cost: $10 general public / $8 Historic Seattle members.
