Integration Single-Node Multi-Node
Data
compression
2:1 (by compression software)
1.3 Highlights
Leading Backup Performance High backup speed
− The integration architecture supports a maximum backup speed of 2.34 TB/hour and
10 x 8 Gbit/s FC ports.
− The single-node architecture supports a maximum backup speed of 9 TB/hour and 10 x 8 Gbit/s FC ports.
− The multi-node architecture supports a maximum backup speed of 31 TB/hour and 20 x 8 Gbit/s FC ports.
The backup performance is based on 8 Gb FC and VTL interfaces with an overwhelming advantage.
Some competitors claim higher backup speed, but it is based on 10 GE and NAS
interfaces, OST interfaces or DD Boost interfaces.
Large backup capacity
− The integration architecture supports up to 48 TB raw capacity with 36 TB usable capacity, 30 TB deduplication space.
− The single-node architecture supports up to 1152 TB raw capacity with 845 TB usable capacity, 180 TB deduplication space.
− The multi-node architecture supports up to 2304 TB raw capacity with 1690 TB
usable capacity, 360 TB deduplication space.
In VTL6900, a RAID 6 group has 12 or 11 disks. And each disk enclosure has one hot spare disk. One 4-TB disk, after being formatted, has 3.71 TB usable capacity.
Compared with products of peer vendors, Huawei VTL series has an advantage in total
capacity because the VTL adopts storage arrays that largely improve the capacity. Some
peer vendors adopt software RAID groups on the back end of the devices that hardly improve the capacity.
Strong simulation capability
− The integrated architecture and single-node architecture can simulate 128 physical
tape libraries, 1024 physical tape drives, and 250,000 tapes.
− The multi-node architecture can simulate 256 physical tape libraries, 2048 physical tape drives, and 500,000 tapes.
− The VTL6900 can simulate various physical tape libraries and physical tape drives.
The VTL6900 has an absolute advantage over similar products of peer vendors in terms
of the number of tapes that can be virtualized. In addition, the VTL6900 can simulate
various brands and models of tapes. Products of peer vendors, however, can simulate only their own or quite limited brands of tape libraries and drives.
Good compatibility
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 1 Go-To-Market
The VTL6900 supports mainstream backup software on all mainstream operating
systems. Backup systems deployed in the globe adopt various kinds of backup software.
When the customer upgrades virtual tape libraries from the physical tape libraries, the
VTL6900 can adapt to more existing backup software and backup policies than other
products. This reduces the need to upgrade backup software when the customer upgrades
backup media. Backup software cost usually occupies a big part in the cost of the entire backup system.
Comprehensive Reliability System redundancy
In the multi-node architecture, VEs support the active-active mode. If a backup operation
is interrupted due to a VE failure, the backup operation can be resumed with minor
effects after the VE is recovered. However, the situation is different during a recovery
operation. A recovery operation usually occurs when the service system breaks down, so
the breakdown time depends on the recovery time. In the active-active mode, VEs ensure
that the system backup will not delay the recovery during the system breakdown.
In the multi-node architecture, SEs support 2 + 1 cluster mode. The 2 + 1 cluster mode is
equally important to service recovery as the active-active mode, while the difference is that the SIR cluster mode ensures recovery of deduplicated data.
Full redundancy design of storage units
To decrease costs, some peer vendors adopt software RAID groups, RAID cards or
single-controller storage array as back-end storage in their backup systems. This may
cause single points of failure. If a failure occurs during a backup operation or recovery
operation, the operation has to be started over which greatly reduces backup efficiency.
The back-end storage unit of the VTL6900 adopts dual controllers. If the running
controller fails, the backup or recovery operation continues on the other controller uninterruptedly.
RAID 6 group with dual parity check disks and a hot spare disk
The VTL6900 uses 12 or 11 disks by default to configure a RAID 6 group and
configures a hot spare disk for each disk enclosure. You are not advised to degrade the
RAID 6 group to RAID 5 group or remove the hot spare disk. If the project requires
degradation, you must first consult with marketing representatives of the VTL PDT.
Simulated tape encryption based on the 256-bit AES algorithm
As a disk backup medium, the VTL greatly improves backup efficiency.
In certain cases, data needs to be exported to physical tapes for offline data protection. In
that case, the AES algorithm encryption is suitable and can be used to prevent physical tapes from being accessed by other tape drives or virtual tape libraries.
The AES encryption is also suitable for uploading backup data to a remote data center.
The AES encryption prevents contents stored in the tapes from being disclosed even if the network is listened.
Most peer vendors do not support the AES encryption or have a low-bit AES encryption.
Flexible Configuration
Multiple deduplication measures (inline deduplication, post process deduplication and no deduplication) can meet different needs of customers.
Most peer vendors support deduplication in their VTL products, but the current
deduplication technology is generally at a low level. Not all types of data are suitable for
deduplication, especially unstructured data like audio and video data. However, unstructured data is currently the fastest growing part in enterprises. If a customer puts
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 1 Go-To-Market
all unstructured data in a storage space that supports deduplication, then the
deduplication function purchased by the customer at a high price will be completely wasted.
In addition, data stored in deduplication space has a lower read and write efficiency than
data stored in non-deduplication space does due to the deduplication operation.
Therefore, customers prefer to store key services that are highly time-sensitive in non-deduplication space.
The VTL6900 supports both deduplication space and non-deduplication space on the
same device and allows the customer to choose the backup space according to the data
type. The customer needs to purchase the deduplication function in the deduplication
space. The deduplication function in products of most peer vendors is often configured for all backup space by default.
Flexible architecture design (integrated/single-node/multi-node architecture)
In a typical backup scenario of an enterprise, the branch office, data center and disaster
recovery center have different specifications requirements. Therefore, they require
various kinds of backup devices, which increase the difficulty and cost of maintaining
these backup devices. The flexible architecture design of the VTL6900 meets
requirements of different scenarios. The enterprise needs only one VTL6900 device to
meet backup demands for different scenarios. This greatly simplifies the maintenance of
backup devices, and even all devices can be remotely managed in a concentrating manner.
Supported backup interface protocols
Support NAS, OST, and VTL interfaces for different backup scenarios.
Integrated backup by the Host Backup
An enterprise's branch office is usually located in a developed urban area, with office
rental and electricity fee as the main daily expense. The Host Backup function of the
VTL9600 allows the customer to install the NBU on a VE. This saves installation space
and power consumption for a backup server, reducing the space and energy consumption demands for the branch office.
Disk spin-down
The VTL6900 adopts the S5500T storage array that can automatically spin down disks
without I/O requests to reduce energy consumption of the backup system.
Maintenance Convenience Integrated Storage Manager (ISM)
The customer can use the ISM to manage both software and hardware of the VTL6900 to
improve efficiency.
Global topology view and monitoring of each engine unit
On the ISM, the management of the VTL6900 is conducted on a graphic interface and the status of all components can be clearly viewed.
Mail alarms ensuring that no fault message is ignored or missed
1.4 Competition Analysis The Data Domain series by EMC is the major competitor product for the VTL6900 and
occupies more than half the global disk backup medium market. Other competitors include
HP, Quantum and a few Chinese brands.
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 1 Go-To-Market
Currently, EMC DD series, HP B series, and Quantum DXi series provide both VTL and NAS
interfaces. However, only VTL6900-IS C10 and VTL6900-AIO C10 support both VTL and
NAS interfaces, while the VTL6900-HAS supports only VTL interfaces. Do not involve NAS
interface demands in projects.
As a product supporting multiple kinds of architecture, the VTL6900 faces different
competitors in each architecture market.
1. Multi-node architecture
The multi-node architecture provides overall high system reliability and data reliability
and is intended for telecommunications carriers or customers who have high reliability requirements. The main competitor product in the multi-node architecture is HP B6200.

According to the comparison in this table, the VTL6900 is inferior in deduplication
space. Therefore, try to avoid using it as a key parameter for bidding. If you cannot avoid,
stress the total usable capacity of the VTL6900 and its support of both deduplication
space and non-deduplication space. This enables customers to choose different backup
space based on their data types and service requirements. And customers only need to purchase the deduplication license for deduplication space.
1.5 License Strategy
License Sales Strategy
The licenses of VTL6900 are permanent, including function and expansion licenses.
The expansion license is used to increase capacity or ports for backup servers.
The function license is used to add new functions and is irrelevant to capacity.
Function License
Replication Replicates data over the IP
network.
This function usually applies to disaster recovery
scenarios. Currently the function only supports
data replication between the VTL6900 series products.
Automated Tape
Caching
Enables the VTL to control access
to physical tape libraries and
automatically import data to
physical tapes according to preset policies.
If no physical tape library is configured, do not use
this license.
When using inline deduplication, ATC function
cannot work.
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 1 Go-To-Market
Secure Tape Encrypts data exported to physical tapes.
If no physical tape library is configured, do not use this license.
NAS
Supports CIFS and NFS interfaces
and provides directory and volume
storage services.
Only VTL6900-IS and VTL6900-AIO support
NAS function.
Host backup
License
Enables the NBU software to be
installed on VEs without
deduplication, thus saving a backup server for the customer.
The customer needs to purchase the NBU software.
Other backup software is not supported by the VTL6900.
OpenStorage
License
The OpenStorage is the API of the
NetBackup and bridge between the
NetBackup and the intelligent storage devices.
The customer needs to buy the license for the
OpenStorage function.
High Availability Supports the active-active mode of
VEs.
This license is needed in the multi-node
architecture.

2.1.1 Key Features
Post Process and Inline Deduplication Technologies
The VTL6900 supports the post process deduplication technology, and the technology uses
the index comparison method to compare data.
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 2 Features and Solutions
Figure 2-1 Technical principle of the post process deduplication
The post process deduplication mode involves two modules of the VTL6900: the VTL
module and the SIR module. The storage space of the VTL6900 is logically divided into two
parts that are used respectively by the VTL module and the SIR module. The storage space
used by the VTL is called VTL storage space or Cache and the storage spaced used by the SIR
is called SIR storage space or Repository. After receiving backup data, the VTL6900 first
stores the backup data in the VTL storage space. At a certain time (a point in time, end of
backup, or at a storage watermark), the SIR module reads the backup data and compares it
with existing data in the SIR storage space. The SIR module divides the source backup data
into several KB-level data blocks and calculates the hash value (also called index) of each
data block by the SHA-1 algorithm. After that, the SIR module compares the hash values of
the new data blocks with those of the existing data blocks to check whether there are duplicate
data blocks. If there are, duplicate data blocks are discarded with only their pointers left. After
that, the left data blocks are stored in the SIR storage space.
The VTL6900 also supports inline deduplication technology that uses index comparison
method.
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 2 Features and Solutions
Figure 2-2 Technical principle of inline deduplication technology
Inline deduplication mode involves two modules of the VTL6900: the VTL module and the
SIR module. After the VTL6900 receives backup data, inline parser divides the backup data
stored in the memory into KB-level data blocks and calculates the hash value (also called
index) of each data block by the SHA-1 algorithm. After that, the SIR module compares the
hash values of the new data blocks with those of the existing data blocks to check whether
there are duplicate data blocks. If there are, duplicate data blocks are discarded with only their
pointers left. After that, the left data blocks are stored in the SIR storage space.
Global Deduplication
A large enterprise usually uses the tiered backup method. Information is first backed up in
each branch office. The information at each branch office is then backed up again in an
enterprise data center or disaster recovery center. This backup mode provides better data
protection but occupies a great amount of storage capacity and intranet bandwidth resources
of the enterprise. In fact, in different branch offices of the same enterprise, there is much
duplicate data, such as same operating systems, same application software or different copies
of the same data file. These duplicate data wastes a lot of storage and bandwidth resources.
The global deduplication function of the VTL6900 provides a good solution to this problem.
On each backup node in branch offices, use the VTL6900 to back up data for the first time
and complete the first deduplication. Before deduplicated data blocks are transmitted to the
central backup node, the indexes (or hash values) of the data blocks are transmitted to the
VTL6900 on the central backup node. Then the VTL6900 compares the indexes with those of
existing data blocks. The VTL6900 does not transmit duplicate data blocks and only keeps
their indexes. For data blocks with unique indexes, the VTL6900 transmits these data blocks
and record their indexes. Since indexes of data blocks occupy much less storage space and
network bandwidth than data blocks do, the global deduplication reduces demands of storage
space and bandwidth and also improves centralized backup efficiency.
OceanStor VTL6900
Sales Guide 2 Features and Solutions
Active-Active Mode of the Two VEs
The two VEs of the VTL 6900 support active-active mode that provides maximum backup
speed of 8,300 MB/s, reducing backup window. Also, the active-active mode ensures that
when one device fails, the other one still has access to the whole VTL space.
SE Cluster Mode
SEs of the VTL6900 support the 2+1 mode.
Due to limited performances of CPU and memory, a single SE supports only 110 TB free
capacity. To improve the supported free capacity, you need to use two SEs with another SE
used as hot spare SE. This is an optional configuration. This configuration ensures a high
deduplication efficiency and a reliable system.
Energy-Efficient Feature
The VTL6900 supports RAID-group-based disk spin-down technology that reduces energy
consumption of the system.
Powerful Virtualization Capability
The VTL6900 has powerful virtualization capability.
The integrated architecture and single-node architecture can simulate 128 physical tape
libraries, 1024 physical tape drives, and 250,000 tapes.
The multi-node architecture can simulate 256 physical tape libraries, 2048 physical tape
drives, and 500,000 tapes. The VTL6900 can emulate tens of types of physical tape libraries
and tape drives from multiple mainstream manufactures, BSUh as Quantum, HP, SUN, and
IBM. It provides diverse choices for users.
The VTL6900 can simulate the following physical tape library products:
ADIC Scalar 100, 1000, i2000, 10K, and i500

2.2 Solutions and Services
2.2.1 Large-Capacity Backup System
Because the number of the physical tape libraries is limited and the robot moving and
frequent head positioning delay responses, the backup performance is low and the backup
window cannot meet users' requirements.
However, the VTL6900 does not have these problems. Data is simultaneously backed up from
heterogeneous application hosts through backup servers over an FC SAN or IP SAN to the
VTL6900. Moreover, virtual tape libraries can be easily shared. The VTL6900 provides up to
576 disk slots. It also uses the active-active dual engine architecture to achieve high
availability and an outstanding backup performance of 30 TB/hour.
In addition, the deduplication function greatly improves storage utilization and saves
customers' investments. Figure 2-3 shows the typical network diagram for large-capacity
backup of the VTL6900.

2.2.2 Tiered Backup System
The VTL6900 has a short backup window and recovers data quickly. A physical tape library
applies to long-term storage of a large amount of offline data. Therefore, the VTL6900 works
with a physical tape library to implement tiered data storage.
Principles of tiered data storage are as follows:
The data that needs long-term archiving is stored in the physical tape library.
The data that is frequently used is stored in the VTL6900.
The VTL6900 takes over the physical tape library.
Physical tape libraries have a slow backup speed and disks are not suitable to store long-term
unused data. However, tiered data storage does not have these two disadvantages.
Figure 2-4 shows the network diagram of tiered data backup of the VTL6900.

Data can be directly recovered either from the VTL6900 or from the physical tape library.
The VTL6900 supports physical tape libraries with FC ports. When a virtual tape drive is of the same type as the physical tape drive, data on tapes can be imported or exported between the VTL6900 and the physical tape library.
2.2.3 Distributed Backup System
The distributed backup solution of the VTL6900 is based on IP. This solution applies to the
application scenario where backup data is distributed in a large area. The distributed backup
solution gathers backup data in many branch offices to a data center to protect data in the
enterprise.
Data in all branch offices can be directly backed up to the VTL6900 in the data center or first
backed up to the local VTL6900 and then replicated to the VTL6900 in the data center
through the IP network according to set policies, thus implementing unified data protection
and backup. Global deduplication ensures that only incremental data is backed up and
transmitted, reducing data amount transmitted and easing the pressure on network bandwidth.
Figure 2-5 shows the network diagram of the distributed backup system.

Due to considerations on the VTL configuration and performance and the WAN bandwidth, the source
nodes of remote replication should not be more than 32. You are advised to configure dedicated WAN bandwidth that is at least 10 Mbit/s.
Between two disaster recovery nodes, original disaster recovery data has to pass the firewall
to reach the destination node. Enabling the firewall during remote replication of data disaster
recovery reduces the system performance by about 10%.

3 Upgrade, Expansion and Compatibility
3.1 Upgrade Capability 1. Patch upgrade of the VTL software due to a bug
The VTL software does not support online patch upgrade. Stop all backup operations
before the upgrade and load the patch to upgrade according to the patch operation manual. After the upgrade, restart backup operations.
2. Back-end storage control software upgrade due to a bug
The controller firmware of the S5500T supports online upgrade. Stop ongoing backup operations before the upgrade and restart them after the upgrade is finished.
3. Hardware upgrade because VE hardware is faulty or out of production
Before a hardware upgrade, stop all backup operations. Power off related components
and replace them to finish the upgrade.
3.2 Expansion Capability The VTL6900 supports expansion of the VTL space and the SIR space. You are not advised to
expand the SIR space. If it is required by the project, you need to expand the SIR space case
by case. The license and service fees for expanding the SIR are not included in the VTL6900
price.
