Oceans and Weather

Blue Planet

•Earth is often called the Blue planet because 70% of the surface of the Earth is covered in water•For this reason, oceans have a great influence on climate and weather

The Sun’s EnergyOceans effecting weather

Remember this?•Land and sea breeze are effected by convection cycle

Sea Breeze: Occurs during the day, wind blows from the

ocean to the land

Land Breeze: Occurs during the night,

wind blows from the land to the ocean

Oceans and WeatherOceans effecting weather

1. Think about Texas… Which areas do you think tend to experience more breezes? Why?

2. What type of current runs by Texas?

3. How do you think that current will effect the coast of Texas?

4. What type of current runs by New York and other areas in the North East?

How will that cold current effect weather in the North East?

Oceans and WeatherWarm Currents

•Warm ocean water evaporates and leaves water particles in the atmosphere•This brings warm, humid, wet weather to regions on the coast of warm currents

Page 10: Oceans and Weather 8.10C. Oceans and Weather Blue Planet Earth is often called the Blue planet because 70% of the surface of the Earth is covered in water

Oceans and WeatherCold Currents

•Cold ocean water causes water temperature to decrease, absorbing the heat, and decreasing humidity•Cold ocean currents bring cold, wet weather to regions on the coast of cold currents

Oceans and WeatherHurricanes What are hurricanes?

Hurricanes are violent storms that form over warm tropical water in a low pressure air mass.

Page 12: Oceans and Weather 8.10C. Oceans and Weather Blue Planet Earth is often called the Blue planet because 70% of the surface of the Earth is covered in water

Oceans and WeatherHurricanes How do they form?

1. Large amounts of warm ocean water evaporates over the ocean producing rain clouds

2. As evaporating speed up due to warm ocean water, a low pressure air mass is formed under the hurricane that draws

in other air masses surrounding the hurricane, creating a larger storm

3. The cycle continues, and the large low pressure air mass begins to spin, create clouds, and bring heavy rain

It has no more fuel: warm water to evaporate

Oceans and WeatherHurricanes What fuels a Hurricane?

Hurricanes are fueled by warm, tropical water and low pressure air

Do you think a hurricane can form over land?

What causes a hurricane to die out?No, it needs warm tropical ocean

water to evaporate
