It’s not too far a drive from Monmouth County to enjoy the historic

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park coursing through Princeton and Stockton.

Yet this now placid setting originated in a competition to win a lucrative and

politically influential contract for a transportation route across central New Jersey.

Join Joseph J. Macasek,

president of the Canal Society

of New Jersey, as he recounts

this tale from the history of

New Jersey’s canal network.

Mr. Macasek also is president

of the Roebling Chapter of the

Society for Industrial Archeology

and director of communications

for the Friends of Historic

Speedwell and serves on the

Morris County Heritage Commission.

See the reverse side for

information on the

Canal Society of New Jersey.

A postcard view of the Delaware & Raritan Canal from the early 1900s.

Registration is requested by calling the library at 732-531-5092.

History of the Canal Society of New Jersey The Canal Society of New Jersey was founded in 1969 and incorporated in 1970 to preserve

the heritage of New Jersey’s transportation canals, primarily the Morris Canal and the Delaware and

Raritan Canal. To accomplish this mission the Society fosters the study of these canals, educates the

public about New Jersey’s canal history, preserves canal remains and artifacts, collects and preserves

canal documents and information, and is promoting the concept and implementation of the Morris

Canal Greenway. The Society is a statewide, all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with

approximately 450 members.

For many years, the Society has operated the New Jersey Canal Museum at Waterloo Village, in

Stanhope, NJ. Although Waterloo Village is in a state of transition, the NJ Division of Parks, in partnership

with the Canal Society, has reinstated school tours of the Canal Museum and related sites, as well as

the Indian village. In addition, the Society is able to open the Museum at regular intervals throughout the

summer and fall and to hold special canal-related programs and events, and has worked to upgrade the

canal-related interpretive displays and programming at the Village. The Society also participates in

canal-related programs and tours at other sites such as Wharton Canal Day in Wharton Borough,

and the NJ State History Fair.

The Society holds five general meetings each year with slide and lecture programs for the

membership and the general public. In addition, the Society organizes field trips to domestic canals,

produces publications on canal topics, installs interpretive signs and markers along canal routes,

and has prepared an interpretive video on New Jersey’s canals.

In addition to its educational programs, the Canal Society actively works to preserve the remains

of New Jersey’s historic canals. To this end, the Society has sponsored the Morris Canal Greenway

project in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, The Land Conservancy of

New Jersey, Roxbury Twp., Wharton Borough and Mount Olive Twp. The Greenway is the Society’s primary

means to preserve the remains and alignment of the Morris Canal, interpret its rich history to the public,

and provide public recreational opportunities while protecting the natural environment. One of the first

interpretive results of the Greenway project was to design templates for historical signage for the Morris

Canal, which have since been installed within Allamuchy Mountain State Park, Hopatcong State Park

and Waterloo Village in partnership with the NJ Division of Parks and Forestry. Partnerships with other

municipalities, counties and non-profit organizations continue to be fostered as the Greenway project

evolves.

The Morris Canal Greenway project is only one of the Society’s collaborations. The Canal Society

is an Officially Recognized Friends Organization within the NJ Division of Parks and Forestry. As such,

the Society has sponsored special volunteer events within the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park,

Allamuchy Mountain State Park, Hopatcong State Park and Liberty State Park. The Canal Society

also provides assistance to local communities with canal preservation efforts and consults with the

New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office on a regular basis regarding canal preservation issues

associated with publicly funded projects.

The Society is also involved in preserving canal-related documents and artifacts at the Society’s

storage facility in Hackettstown. The Society has several large and important collections of canal-related

material and has assisted in a program to microfilm historic canal-related documents in the collection of

the New Jersey State Archives for public circulation.

the tormented genius and James Donald costars as Theo, who supported his brother from the time Vincent left Holland in 1878 to his death in Auvers in 1890. Anthony Quinn won an Oscar for his eight-minute turn as Van Gogh’s friend and rival Paul Gaugin.
