Going Local means Quality!

Elgin Corners was designed by G3 Architecture with the idea that by producing quality architectureone would also attract a distinct type of retailer to the area as well. And here are just a few examples of that.

Our first stop is at House Warmings, with a focus on distinctive furniture gifts and home decor. The first thing to notice when visiting is their Cobistyle collection of easy pieces of furniture featuring versatile ottomans, benches, and accent chairs including full-sized sofas and headboards. The store owners have also spent time to find unique gift ideas from local artists that you just wont find from other retailers. Be sure and check out the "Wine Rocks" wine rack as well.

Next up is J.Antony & Sons Organic Food Store, based on the European idea that the only way to eat right is to purchase your food fresh everyday. The emphasis is on organic fruits and vegetables, fresh local breads and a spice selection not usually seen in this area. J. Antony & Sons – organic market http://antonyandsons.com/ - see website for details

Also be sure and stop in at the Living Wellness Center where their goal is to identify the root cause of a person’s condition and to provide a course of care that is realistic and effective; but with a focus on warmth, compassion and respect in a comfortable and supportive environment. http://www.livingwellness.ca/ - see website for details

We will be exploring more unique stores and upcoming events at Elgin Corners in upcoming editions. Until then be sure and stop in and see what local quality really means!

If you're looking for something to do in Ocean Park, Ocean Park Pizza is always a good call, Belles on 32nd is close by, and the Crescent Legion has live entertainment most weekends. There's lots of music and entertainment going on elsewhere in the Peninsula as well, or the "Rock" as we call it. If you want to know what's happening any night of the week, visit the Night Owl column at www.whiterocksun.com

Trying to book a landscape company in the summer is like trying to get tickets to a Canucks playoff game; not likely to happen unless you are willing to pay a premium for it.So, why not get some of the smaller jobs done in the fall. Pricing can be up to 25% lower than in the summer season. In addition, the best time to plant shrubs, trees and bulbs is in the fall or early spring.

What about The lawn?

Just because you have put away your lawn furniture does not mean you should stop taking care of your grass. This is the time to improve the health of your lawn for next year's usage. Many people who have lawn problems do not realize how detrimental thatch build-up is to their grass. An advantage to raking those leaves is that you de-thatch your lawn at the same time. Removing broadleaf weeds to eliminate the competition for available nutrients and water is also crucial.

There is a new service available by Terra Tea Solutions, specializing in improving the health of your lawn and trees naturally. Their pre-winter program of soil conditioning ensures that your lawn and plants are ready to thrive in the spring.

Understand that the ball isn’t going to go as far or spin as muchPlay the ground game. When its cold outside, it’s likely theground will be hard too, so use it to your advantage Keep your hands warm!
