Ocean Lake Wildlife Habitat Management Area

The 11,505-acre Ocean Lake Wildlife Habitat Management Area is managed primarily for waterfowl production. There are a wide range of habitats, from arid sagebrush grassland and cultivated croplands to permanently wet marsh and open water. You will find geese, ducks, sandhill cranes, pheasants, mourning doves, cottontail rabbits, mule deer, muskrats, raccoons, red foxes, mink, grebes, terns, pelicans, snipes, avocets, and more. The Lake holds walleye, trout, bass, crappie, perch, bullhead and ling. Most of the area is classified as crucial breeding and nesting range for Canada geese. Much of the southeastern portion has been classified as supporting habitat for whooping cranes, currently an endangered species. Wetlands like those at Ocean Lake are among the richest habitat types in our country.

established and are identified on maps in this pamphlet. ■ RVs and campers with self contained septic systems may be directed to campgrounds

without outhouse amenities. ■ Potable water is not available on WHMAs. Be prepared to supply your own water.

○ Rules ■ No person shall discharge fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices. ■ No person shall engage in wood cutting. ■ No person shall litter.

TRASH:

Pack It In / Pack It Out Throughout the eclipse weekend, Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel will be occasionally collecting garbage to mitigate potential wildlife conflicts and reduce litter. However, as a general rule it is your responsibility to pack out all of your own trash, and for everyone’s safety, littering will be strictly enforced.

FIRES:

A Fire Ban is in effect on state, private, BLM and Wyoming Game and Fish Commission lands. The following acts are prohibited on all Wyoming Game and Fish Commission-owned and administered lands:

○ Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire charcoal grill, coal or wood burning stove.

BEARS:

You are in bear country

○ How to store food, garbage, and attractants ■ Never store attractants in your tent. ■ Store attractants inside a vehicle, hard sided campers, horse trailers, bear canisters, or

bear boxes. ■ Attractants include anything with an odor: food, chapstick, toothpaste, pet food, cook

stoves, gas/propane canisters, garbage ■ Wipe down eating and cooking area after each use. ■ Do not bury garbage; bears will just dig it up and it’s illegal. ■ Most garbage will need to packed out with you.

○ What to do if a bear comes into your camp. ■ Remain calm and do not panic. Bears generally avoid people and they are probably

attracted to odors of food. ■ Get your bear spray prepared for use. ■ Do not approach the bear. ■ Try to scare the bear away by yelling, shouting, banging on pots. ■ If the bear does not get a food reward they will usually leave. ■ If a bear tries getting into your tent fight back and use your personal defense.

If a bear is in your camp, contact Game and Fish immediately by either locating us at one of the check stations indicated on the attached map or by calling 1-800-442-2767.
