Visit during OB Street Fair

For Ryan and Deborah Knowles, theannual chili cook-off at the OB StreetFair is about love of family and commu-nity.

On June 23, they will compete for afourth year in the competition as the“Red Hot Chili Peckers” — a name thatpays homage to the beaks of OceanBeach’s boisterous wild parrots. Thecook-off serves as their annual familyreunion; children, brothers, mom, nieces and in-laws join in to set up,serve, tear down and spend a day mak-ing memories.

With a full field of 28 contenders —featuring teams named Bar Key Chili,Chief Kiki and OBeeyahh Chili — thecook-off is not an endeavor to be takenlightly.

There’s the expense: a registration

fee, food costs, an investment in equip-ment and decorations. There arerequirements: all recipes must be cookedon site or ahead in an industrial kitchen, and contestants need to serve up at least10 gallons of chili for 5,000 tastings.

There’s also the time involved: Debhandles the details and plans the boothweeks in advance. Ryan spends threedays in a restaurant kitchen simmeringhis recipe to satisfaction. Event daystarts at 4 a.m. and ends 12 hours later.None of it guarantees a prize, which hasso far eluded the Knowles.

Why spend all that money and time?“It’s for a good cause,” Ryan said. “It

helps pay for OB’s Fourth of July fire-works and I dig fireworks.”

Weeks before the competition, Deband Ryan — the latter a chemist by pro-fession — are at home preparing.Banksy, the family cat, supervises from

the couch as Deb goes over logistics andRyan tweaks his recipe on a small scale.

As he stirs an aromatic pot of chili, hereveals his process: toasting fresh spices, roasting dried red chilies in a cast-ironpan with olive oil, cubing and searing aroast, adding ground beef, choosing thefreshest spices like oregano and basil, and finding hot chilies like jalapeñosand serranos.

The result is a spicy, meaty broth withsmoke and heat. Paired with Ryan’shomemade bread, it is a palate pleaser.

Here’s how the Ocean Beach StreetFair’s chili cook-off works:

Time: The cook-off takes place at thestreet fair at the foot of Newport Avenuefrom 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on June 23.Winners will be announced on the main

BE SURE TO VISIT VOLTAIRE STREET DURING THE OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR!

Long before the advent of onlinesocial networking, people were con-necting through community art and,in the process, giving neighborhoods asense of history and identity.

In Ocean Beach, community muralslocated on buildings around the neigh-borhood capture the essence of the sea-side town. Defining and engaging, mural themes range from surfing tocars and flag-waiving Americana.

On June 23, visitors to the 33rdannual OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival will have the opportunity tobring two new community murals tolife. The first mural is a surfboardtheme. The second mural will com-memorate Ocean Beach’s 125thanniversary.

Both murals offer good old-fashionedtactile face-to-face social networkingwith a purpose.

To participate, purchase a pre-illus-trated tile for $10, dip brushes intopaint and follow the instructions on thepalette.

“The community mural has to be

one of my favorite activities of the day,”said Barbara Iacometti, Street Fairchairwoman and president of theOcean Beach MainStreet Association.“It’s not only a lot of fun for people whoparticipate, but it is a significant part ofOcean Beach’s beautification. Peoplelove coming down and seeing all theart we have displayed across town.”

Ocean Beach artist and communityactivist Rich James started the art pro-ject in 1999. When he died in 2008,his friend and mentor Janis Ambrosianitook over the mural project.

Truly a feast for the senses, theOcean Beach Street Fair is a wonderfulplace to see and purchase art of allkinds.

Artists’ Alley has become one of theannual street fair’s most popular areas, with so much interest from the publicand the artists that this component ofthe festival doubled in space last yearand this year.

Now running along two wholeblocks of Bacon Street on either side ofNewport Avenue, 74 artists will par-ticipate this year, selected by a juriedprocess. Only handcrafted and uniqueitems are included, with additionalactivities set to include art demonstra-tions and interactive activities likepainting and children’s craft making.

Visitors to Artists’ Alley will be ableto find a broad range of items, from thepractical to the whimsical: purses, hats, jewelry, hair barrettes, paintings, sculp-ture, photography, ceramics and evenfitness hula hoops. Just about anymedium with which an artist mightchoose to create is likely to be foundamong the booths.

Liz Greene, creative director of theOcean Beach MainStreet Association, said the area is a mini art festival initself, which sells out its space well inadvance of the festival.

“It’s a really lively part of the event,”Greene said. “People who participatein Artists’ Alley create whatever they’reselling by hand themselves. So, it’s areal unique component of the fair.

“We do have other booths through-out Newport Avenue that have somehandmade things or there are peoplewho might be selling other people’shandmade things,” she said. “Andthen, of course, we have sunglass andstraw hat people and so on. But thisarea is strictly for the people who makea living by supporting themselvesthough their artwork.”

One of the most alluring aspects of the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival is the outdoor musical entertainment, shownhere at the Main Stage with the ocean and OB Pier in the background. Organizers are adding one stage this year, bringing the total num-ber of stage locations to six. To top things off, there will also be nearly 40 musical acts performing this year. Now in its 33rd year, there are fewevents in San Diego that compare to theOcean Beach Street Fair. From thescenic beach to a wide variety of ven-dors, the festival offers up a wonderful, free, daylong experience for the wholefamily. While there is no shortage ofactivities, the musical component of thestreet fair is one of the event’s biggestdraws.

Booked by Ted Wigler, owner of Win-ston’s Beach Club and the 710 BeachClub — along with Michael Head ofHead Trap Recording Studios — the2012 Ocean Beach Street Fair willinclude six stages, featuring music from39 performance acts. Everything fromNew Orleans-style jazz to indie rock ison the menu.

“We pick from an array of local andnational bands with all different styles,”said Head. “This year we’re celebrating125 years of OB, so we tried to have agreat showing of artists based in thearea.”

With tens of thousands of guests, it’s

clear that a spot on the street fair bill isa prime gig for any artist.

“We get hundreds of physical andweb submissions, so it’s not hard to fillthe slots,” Head said.

The stages follow general themes, based on their location. The Artists’Alley Stage will feature roots, blues andjazz; Wonderland will host groove, acoustic and kids. The Bacon Sun Stagewill feature rock, pop and Americana, while the 92107 OB Stage will play hostto the most diverse types of acts andgenres, with a focus on Ocean Beachmusical artists.

“Musicians from everywhere want toplay here, do the gigs in OB and playthe street fair,” Head said. “I run aweekly gig at the OB Farmers Market, just feet away from where Jewel wasfirst seen and signed at the old JavaJoe’s. So OB is just kind of a magical, musical place.”

He considers music to be a major partof what makes Ocean Beach special.

“The people of OB really appreciate a

good show,” he said. “I’ve heard morethan one band say, ‘If we can rule OB,we can rule the world.’ And that justmight be true.”

“The people of OB reallyappreciate a good show. I’veheard more than one band say,‘If we can rule OB, we can rulethe world. And that just mightbe true.”

MICHAEL HEADMusical booking organizer

With 39 performance acts taking part in this year’s streetfair, there is no shortage of options for world-class entertain-ment. The music kicks off 10 a.m., with all stages accessibleto all ages. Here are a few of this year’s highlights:

Kim Monroe & Chris Eves / Bacon Sun Stage, 11 a.m.Hailing from New York,

singer-songwriter Kim Monroeperforms Americana tunes, highlighted by the slide guitarand harmony vocals of ChrisEves.

Blessed with a soulful voiceand sporting an arsenal ofgreat tunes, Monroe is a majortalent primed for a breakout ona national level.

Todo Mundo / Wonderland Stage, 3:45 p.m.Performing world music

with a difference, Todo Mundoincludes Latin influences, aswell as touches of folk and reg-gae, for a sound that’s heavyon rhythm and 100 percentdanceable.

Give one song a listen and itwill be instantly clear why TodoMundo has remained one ofSan Diego’s most popularbands for years.

Bad Science Fiction / 92107 Stage, 4:30 p.m.Difficult to pigeon-

hole, Bad Science Fic-tion is equal parts indierock, Americana, ex-perimental music andfun.

Headed by ChuckSchiele, the group hasa visual element to itsperformances, but it’sSchiele’s rockin’ tunesthat truly capture yourattention.

Skid Roper / Wonderland Stage, 5 p.m. Perhaps best known as half

of a duo with Mojo Nixon dur-ing the 1980s, Skid Roper is aSan Diego institution andmusical virtuoso.

For this performance Roperwill be in surf-music mode, playing a mix of classic andoriginals.

From the first notes, it’ll beclear why Roper is consideredone of the best guitarists intown.

People who live or work in OceanBeach know it oozes community like fewother places. And salon owner ReneePitera revels in that sense of “closeness, camaraderie and pride.”

So when there’s a chance to help thecommunity that has supported her Ren-ovation Hair Salon for 16 years, she’seager to step up.

“Anyone who’s been around OB for along time is eager to help out,” said Pit-era, a mother of five kids — and threedogs.

And that’s why she’s participating inthe 33rd annual Ocean Beach StreetFair and Chili Cook-Off Festival for the16th time, once again donating all herproceeds from the event to local causes.

This year, she will split the moneybetween the Ocean Beach MainStreetAssociation’s Fourth of July fireworksshow and Hedy’s Cause, which helpssupport a young San Diego grandmoth-er who’s fighting brain cancer.

In past years, Pitera has supported theSusan G. Komen for the Cure, LanceArmstrong’s LIVESTRONG organizationand the Red Cross tsunami fund.

She and about seven other hair-dressers, including volunteers from theCalifornia Hair Design Academy, willwield scissors and clippers this year ather booth on Newport Avenue nearHodad’s.

The suggested donation for a haircutis $10.

Pitera said she anticipates cutting andstyling hair for up to 200 people.Fundraising at the event, she said, notonly helps the community, but her ownbusiness as well. Over the years, her par-

ticipation in local activities has broughtmany loyal customers to her salonacross from the beach, above Nick’s atthe Pier restaurant.

Her other volunteer work includesserving as her daughter’s class librarianat St. Columba School and joining DogBeach cleanups, as well as helping at theSurfrider Foundation beach cleanupsand Paddle for Clean Water event.

She and her staff have participated inan AIDS walk and a Red Cross Cut-a-thon — haircuts on the sand — to raisemoney for Hurricane Katrina victims. Her children, too, have joined in atevents like tree planting along CableStreet and participating in the annualOcean Beach Holiday Parade, wherethey helped decorate a vintage rental carlast year.

“I believe you get out of life what youput into it,” Pitera said. “I’ve beenblessed with a healthy family, a greatbusiness, an awesome community andthe San Diego sunshine.”

The Ocean Beach Street Fair & ChiliCook-Off Festival is truly a grassrootsevent, largely run by volunteers, manyof whom have been involved for years. One key volunteer player is BarbaraIacometti.

Co-owner of DetailsSalon and Spa (4993Niagara Ave., #205) forthe past 22 years,Iacometti sits on theboard of the OceanBeach MainStreet Asso-ciation, volunteeringfor several more com-mittees and serving asthe Ocean Beach Street Fair chairwomanfor the last four years.

In her time as a volunteer, she hashandled everything from distribution ofevent T-shirts to preparing the donationcans at businesses.

Iacometti considers volunteering to

be an important part of being an OceanBeach resident.

“Personally, I would always want tovolunteer because it’s more fun to bepart of something rather than just go toit,” she said.

Her favorite part of the event, howev-er, is just before the crowds arrive andjust after they leave.

“As a chairman, I walk onto the streetat 3 o’clock in the morning, when peo-ple are still heading home from the barsfrom the previous night,” said Iacomet-ti. “I get to watch Ocean Beach trans-form as the streets empty and spaces aremarked, things are set up, items aredelivered.

“I get to watch the whole thing cometo be,” she said. “I spend the day therewith an amazing mix of people attend-ing, and then see it all come down sothat by the next day everything is backto normal.”

As a business owner, she notes theOcean Beach Street Fair has had a

major, positive impact on local business-es.

“It makes people aware that OB is onthe map,” Iacometti said. “People comefrom all over and they get to see what’shere, so anything that brings people intoOB is huge for business. We’re expectingupward of 70,000 people here that day.”

She said that beyond the entertain-ment value and good vibes, the StreetFair has a larger purpose.

“The profit that we make is whatfunds everything else in the area for theyear, from the annual fireworks to trashpick-up,” she said.

Iacometti said she plans to continuevolunteering for years to come, bothfrom a sense of civic duty and becauseit’s fun.

“Volunteers are key to the event,”Iacometti said. “Just about everyoneworking on it is unpaid. They’re impor-tant because they make the street fairhappen. If we didn’t have volunteers,we wouldn’t have an event.”
