A Call to Action Occupy UMass BostonAs of 7:30 AM January 23rd, students have occupied the Campus Center Atrium (outside of the cafete-ia). All students, staff, faculty and members of the community are welcome to take part in an ongoingonversation to work for a university based on their needs. General Assemblies will be held each

weekday at 3 PM and open to all. Below is a copy of the initial press release sent out by the occupiers.

WE ARE THE 99% at UMass Boston who have seen our fees rise 8% year after year with no endorder to carry out the 1%s Master Plan for our school. We are the 99% who have had our pay fro

by the administration. We are the 99% who are going to graduate from the only public four-year schn this city with $25,000 in student debt and little prospects. We are the 99% who are tired of watchhe privatization of this university. We are the 99% who dont want our university run by the unelec

bureaucrats known as the Board of Trustees. We are tired of the Board of Trustees investing our feehidden funds and trusts with no interest in insuring that they do not financially support war profiteers

We have liberated this space in the campus center from the corporate administrators who conhis university. We will no longer recognize their illegitimate authority; we will take the entire univer

back from the 1% so the 99% can have their university. Non-violent direct action and people power is weapon against the 1% and its plans to corporatize the university.

For far too long the 99% have been excluded from the global conversation about the directionour schools, our neighborhoods, and our world. We are in solidarity with Occupy Wall St., Occupy BostOccupy UC Davis, Occupy Berkeley, and all other Occupy movements. We are in solidarity with the studevolt in Chile and those at hundreds of other universities who are holding down a space for the 99%he conversation about our future.

We hope our revolt can bring the 1%s plan of privatization to a halt. We want the voices of evmember of 99% to be heard in creating the 99%s strategic plan for the university.

We invite students, faculty and staff at UMass Boston to come to our first GA at 3 PM todaydiscuss how we want to take our university from the hands of the 1%. We call upon students from acrhe UMass system to start their own occupations and battle the stooges of the 1% who control th

universities through non-violent direct action and mass mobilization.

We call for the removal of the unelected Board of Trustees and are making the campus center a space for direct democracy and transparency. As of January 23, 2012 the campus center will no lonbe a cash cow for the administration to rent out to corporations, instead it will be a space for the 99%discuss and implement their own plans for the university. This is only the beginning of a movement twill transform the entire university into a place run by and for the 99%. We realize that the only wayachieve this is to physically put a stop to the corporate machine by occupying our cities, our towns, our schools.
