ASSOCIATE DEAN’S SUMMARY

1

The School of Rehabilitation Science The School of Rehabilitation Science began at McMaster University in 1989. Our goal is to provide excellent, self-directed, problem-based educational programs for students in both occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Faculty, staff and students contribute to the advancement of rehabilitation science and health care through excellence in collaborative research and service initiatives.

The School of Rehabilitation Science is located in the Institute of Applied Health Sciences on the central campus of McMaster University. The Institute building is shared with Mohawk College and houses the classroom and practical teaching space used by our three educational programs – Master in Occupational Therapy, Master in Physiotherapy, and Master and PhD program in Rehabilitation Science. The Institute also houses faculty and administrative office space, and space for research activity. Faculty &Staff In 2006, the School of Rehabilitation Science included 32 university-based faculty members supported through university-based education funding or research funds. The School has 15 staff, providing administrative, educational, admissions and research support to the School and faculty members. The School includes over 200 clinical faculty and professional associate faculty members who provide clinical placements, tutoring, and teaching sessions. McMaster University and our education and research programs benefit significantly from this powerful university-community partnership. Education The School of Rehabilitation Science has three educational programs, all at the graduate level. Our two professional programs are Master’s programs in occupational therapy and physiotherapy. A portion of the academic and clinical components of these professional programs are carried out in Thunder Bay, at a facility on the Lakehead University campus. We also have an international stream for our professional programs, and currently enrol 6-8 international students per year across both disciplines. Our third educational program is the graduate program in Rehabilitation Science. Within this program, we have a Master’s degree with a thesis or online course-based option and a new PhD program which began in September 2006. Our professional occupational therapy and physiotherapy graduate programs are highly regarded nationally and internationally. McMaster continues to receive the highest number of applicants in Ontario for these programs. Student evaluations of the OT and PT programs consistently rate courses and faculty very highly. Our Rehabilitation Science programs currently have 57 students enrolled.

Alumni In 2006, we held a very successful alumni reunion, in conjunction with the Helen Saarinen Annual Fun Run. We have published an email newsletter for alumni and community clinicians, to communicate information about our education programs, faculty, students and research knowledge generated by the School about rehabilitation. The School also has an endowment fund to raise monies to support student scholarships and bursaries. The School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University is known in Canada and around the world for the high quality of our education programs, students, faculty and research. We are proud to be part of the Faculty of Health Sciences and McMaster University. Through our partnerships with community-based therapists and consumers, we continue to develop and strengthen our educational programs and research. My thanks to everyone who contributes to the success of the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University. With best wishes

Message from Assistant Dean (Occupational Therapy)

Change appears to be a constant within the health care community and the School of Rehabilitation Science. We have seen several positive changes in our occupational therapy program in the past year. A long-time faculty member, Muriel Westmorland, retired last June to pursue her many adventures and I wish her all the best. And for the first time in many years, we have new faculty members in our program. I welcome Dr. Brenda Vrkljan, who joined us in a full time position in July 2006. I am also pleased to welcome a number of new faculty in part time positions: Lorie Shimmell, Shaminder Dhillon, Rebecca Gewurtz, and Beth Linkewich in our Northern Studies Stream in Thunder Bay. It is always exciting and stimulating to have new people with new ideas working with us. Oculum. Faculty reviewed the evidence that we have gathered

the first five years of the MSc (OT) program, and made some decisions about the structure and content of courses in the first three terms. The recommended changes have been put in place, and so far the feedback from students and faculty has been positive. Our plans are to use the same process at our 2007 retreat to review the second year of the curriculum. Aprofessional competencies for entry-level occupational therapists. Curriculum mapping will provide us with an overall document of the whole curriculum, to enable us to review and update our expectations, teaching, evaluations and the sequencing/timing of each. I thank the faculty for the time they have already committed to this important activity. In the coming year, students and community clinicians will be asked for their input into this document. Ostrong. Mary Edwards, our professional practice coordinator, and myself have been visiting occupational therapists in several facilities to talk about our program and discuss the challenges and opportunities of being preceptors for our students. The clinical education that our students receive out on placement makes up half of our two year program, and we know this experience is essential for students to gain the skills and abilities needed to meet all of the entry-level competencies. We are most appreciative of the time and effort that all preceptors contribute towards educating the next generation of occupational therapists. I believe that working together will help to ensure a strong and dynamic occupational therapy profession in the future.

Message from Assistant Dean (Physiotherapy)

This has been a very progressive year for the Master’s of Science physiotherapy program. The 2006 graduating class was very successful in gaining employment in both the public and the private sectors. Thank you to the faculty, tutors, preceptors and community for their contributions to the education of these new physiotherapists. We admitted 64 (including 1 international) highly qualified students in September. We continue to assist students with English as a second language through an initiative by Professor Liliana Coman and our Program Administrator, Helena Collins. Another initiative that is ongoing over the first year is the Professionalization Portfolio

that helps students reflect on the challenging transition to becoming an independent practitioner. Our curriculum is always evolving. This year the goal of the program retreat was to review the curriculum in relation to the ongoing changes in the health environment and in physiotherapy practice. We consulted with representatives from the physiotherapy community and the Local Health Information Network and then with the assistance of a facilitator, Dr. Erik Lockhart, we developed a plan that will guide curriculum revision over the next few years. The faculty has been very active this year. Dr. Linda Woodhouse and Dr. Norma MacIntyre have been recruited to full time, tenure track positions. Dr. Patty Solomon was the recipient of an Honorary Membership awarded by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association that acknowledges individuals who have made major contributions to the profession. Professor Paul Stratford was the 2006 recipient of the "Golden Pen Award" from the American Physical Therapy Association- the first international scholar to win this award! Paul and Greg Spadoni as well as Dr. Joy MacDermid and colleagues were recipients of Silver Quill Awards from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Among several other program initiatives, a highlight this year was hosting Dr. Carolee Winstein, the SRS first Dr. Harry Lyman Hooker Distinguished Visiting Professor. Dr. Winstein is a professor of Biokinesiology & Physical Therapy and directs the Motor Behaviour and Neurorehabilitation lab at the University of Southern California. She offered a wonderful public lecture and consulted with students and faculty. Thank you to the faculty and the staff for all their efforts and support. It truly is a team effort to provide this innovative and excellent program in order to graduate exceptional physiotherapists – a McMaster tradition.

Message from Graduate Coordinator Rehabilitation Science (RS) Program

The Rehabilitation Science Graduate Program includes the PhD program and the MSc program with two options: a thesis option which began in September 2000, and an online, course-based option which was added September 2004. In September of 2006, we admitted our first students into the PhD program. The approval of the PhD program by the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies was the highlight of 2006. This, along with the registration of 3 excellent students, provided an opportunity to celebrate this significant accomplishment following many years of planning on the part of many faculty members. Thank you to everyone who was involved for your ongoing commitment and particularly to Jean Wessel for taking the proposal through the various levels of approval. In 2006 we admitted 27 students across the PhD program (3) and

MSc programs (10 thesis option, 14 course based option) bringing our total current enrolment to 57 students. We offer 14 courses within the Program and our students continue to take additional courses primarily within other graduate programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences. In 2006, we offered the Measurement and Evaluation of Quality of Life in Rehabilitation course, an online course taken by students from McMaster and the University of British Columbia who have received fellowships from the CIHR Training Program in Rehabilitation Research. I wish to offer thanks to a number of people for their contribution and commitment to the ongoing excellence of the Program: to the supervisors and committee members and to the faculty who teach the RS courses both on campus and online for their contributions to the students’ educational experience; to the members of the RS Admissions, Curriculum and Comprehensive Examination Oversight Committees for the ongoing development of the academic and administrative aspects of the Program; and to Joyce Tryssenaar for her ongoing commitment to the well-received online, course-based MSc option. Respectfully submitted

THE QUALITY OF LIFE PROGRAM

33

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Training Program in Rehabilitation Research - Developing and Using Rehabilitation Research Evidence to Enhance Quality of Life In July 2004, Mary Law and Joy MacDermid, along with Janice Eng from UBC, received a training grant from the CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis. The grant is worth $1,863,000, and is in effect until June 2010. The funding is to go towards the training of MSc and PhD students to “develop and use rehabilitation research evidence to enhance quality of life”. The aim is to prepare rehabilitation trainees for independent research careers and provide specific training through online problem-based learning courses, a research practicum, a personal training plan and a summer publication and grant writing workshop. Applicants for this program must already be enrolled or accepted into a PhD program at McMaster or UBC. CIHR stipends are available to students who qualify. In 2006, nine training stipends were awarded to 2 Rehabilitation Science PhD students and 7 MSc students at McMaster. As of December 2006, QLP has funded 20 students (UBC and McMaster) since the program started in January 2005. Some funds were used to upgrade the computer facilities in the graduate student office. The QoL course offered online to students from McMaster and UBC was coordinated and offered by Mary Law and Joy MacDermid in January 2006.
