An interview with Rodrigues “Rocky” Smith, Safety Manager, Escoe Industrial Contractors, Inc.

Rodrigues “Rocky” Smith has been part of the Georgia Tech OSHA Training Institute Education Center’s (OTIEC) family for over six years. He has directly applied the knowledge he learned from our courses to his current job, and the results have been rewarding! With his newly acquired professional knowledge from completing consecutive industry courses, he has become an asset to his current team– preventing multiple workplace incidents. This impact proves why the occupational safety and health program at Georgia Tech sets students apart from others in the industry.

“The instructors have real-world experience,” Smith said. “They have an open-door communication policy, making themselves available outside of the classroom, and even after the conclusion of the course, to give industry advice.” He attributes his current career success to their mentorship.

When Smith first embarked on his quest for OSHA training, he encountered programs that did not match his needs. He desired an OSHA program that could match his passion for safety with industry expert trainers, hands-on learning techniques, and more. He expressed his needs to a colleague, who then introduced him to Georgia Tech Professional Education’s OSHA program. Initially, Smith was drawn to the program’s strong business acumen and “top-rated” reputation. He found that the instructors’ dedication to their students and the material, along with the program’s hands-on approach to learning, relevant courses, and workshop scenarios, far exceeded those of any program he had seen or heard about. However, as time passed, he realized he was not just receiving a great education from the largest Region IV OSHA Center, but was now a part of its caring family environment.

The continual welcoming atmosphere created by the friendly staff, instructors, and students has amazingly kept him not only coming back for more courses, but also connected with peers and staff from 2009.

Rocky Smith has over 14 years of experience in the construction industry, with nearly seven of those years in the safety arena. Smith plans to continue to work toward earning his Construction Health and Safety Technician Certificate (CHST), the highly sought- after industry credential. He also plans to obtain a Georgia Tech OTIEC Premier Occupational Safety and Health Certificate.

This course is for private- and public-sector workers who have completed the OSHA 500 instructor course. Construction industry voluntary compliance outreach trainers must take this update course every four years. If your trainer card has expired, you must retake the OSHA 501 course and the exam to be current. If your card has been expired for 10 years or more, you must retake OSHA 510 and OSHA 500. Attendees should bring a laptop and be prepared to make a presentation during the course. This year the success continued for Warner Robins Air Force Base. Since 2011, Georgia Tech Professional

Education has partnered with the Base to offer occupation safety and health training courses, including

OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene, Machinery Standards, and others.

On December 4, 2014, more than 30 Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex employees received certificates

in Industrial Safety and Health from the Georgia Tech OSHA Training Institute Education Center.

A Success Story Continues...Last year we reported on the success of hosting on-site courses through Georgia Tech Professional Education. Our ability to provide an array of courses in safety and health, and tailor them to current organizational needs, generates a unique and successful professional training experience.

Why Georgia Tech:Georgia Tech Professional Education partnered with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to offer training at Robins Air Force Base. Safety is a priority at the installation, which has more than 20,000 civilian and military personnel. Instructors worked with senior leadership from the 78th Air Base Wing and from the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex (WR-ALC).

“We are proud to offer our depth of experience and knowledge of OSHA regulations in this partnership with Robins Air Force Base. The employees received certificates from a nationally and internationally recognized engineering school,” said Daniel J. Ortiz, MPH, CSP, manager of GTRI’s Occupational Safety and Health Program Office.

The Benefit: The training program saved the base $500,000 in travel and other costs, and resulted in new safety programs implemented across the facility, according to David Decker with the 78th Air Base Wing Safety Office at Robins Air Force Base. The 78th Air Base Wing, OSHA, and the American Federation of Government Employees

Local 987 were essential to Georgia Tech Professional Education’s ability to provide the training. “We were able to use examples based on our experience at Robins Air Force Base,” said James B. Howry, senior research associate at GTRI’s Electronic Systems Laboratory. “We integrated our subject matter expertise to help address their specific challenges.”

Howry estimated the cost of a course at $200 per person. This was a significant savings from the $1,500 per person to attend a similar course off-site.

The Recipients Say:“When I’m out in the field, I can help and resolve safety concerns and potentially keep people from getting hurt,” said Robert Tidwell, 402nd Commodities Maintenance Group aircraft sheet metal mechanic and an American Federation of Government Employees Local 987 safety representative. “Our ultimate goal is safety for our workforce.”

Note: Students are required to provide their own personal protective equipment (hard hat, steel-toed safety shoes or boots, and safety glasses). Gloves and breathing apparatus will be furnished. Firefighters and others with SCBAs may bring them, though it is not necessary. If you bring your SCBA, we can arrange for cylinder refills (2216 and 4500 psi).

All students must have a complete physical examination, emphasizing respiratory and cardiac fitness, before attending this course. SCBA and encapsulated suits are used extensively, which may place an excessive strain on the heart and lungs. Appropriate medical forms will be provided with your registration confirmation letter.

If I am new to the safety field, where do I start?For Construction Industry, please begin with OSHA 510 (see page 8). For General Industry, please begin with OSHA 511 (see page 10).

Are there courses with requirements or prerequisites?The OSHA 500, 501, 502, 503, 3115, and HAZ 1006 courses have prerequisites. Please go to the course page for details. We cannot allow/grant exceptions for prerequisites and work experience.

How can I check the courses that I’ve taken?To request a Georgia Tech Professional Education Transcript, fill out the form at pe.gatech.edu/transcript.

What is included in the course fees?The course fee includes all necessary classroom materials, OSHA, EST, and HAZ attendance certificates, applicable course tour, and badge identification.

How can I purchase a CFR, and when will I receive it?If the CFR is required for your class, you should purchase it when you register. If you purchase the CFR, you will receive it at check-in the first day of class.

How can I have Georgia Tech OSHA Training Institute Education Center come to my company and teach a course?For on-site training and topic areas, see page 8 in the catalog.

How do I apply for the OSHA 500, 501, 502, or 503 courses?Each student who participates in a Georgia Tech Professional Education course is required to complete a profile. You should go to pe.gatech.edu/user/login to create a new account profile. A step-by-step guide on how to create a new account and apply for these courses is found at https://pe.gatech.edu/osha-program-faqs.

Build Areas of Expertise – Occupational Safety and Health CertificatesHow do I request a program certificate?You must fill out a Program Certificate Petition form for review the first day of class. If you earn your certificate for a one-day class, you will need to send in your petition form at least two days before the class begins. Otherwise your certificate will be mailed to you.

When will I receive my course certificate?Georgia Tech’s OSHA Training Institute distributes OSHA and HAZ certificates by mail, or on the last day of class. Georgia Tech’s Professional Education Registrar’s Office mails EST certificates after grades are submitted.

How do I request a replacement certificate?If you are replacing an OSHA numbered course certificate, there will be a $25.00 fee, and you can request this by following the instructions here: pe.gatech.edu/replacecert.

What are Certification/Maintenance Points?ABIH has previously awarded CM (Certification Maintenance) credit for OSHA Education Center courses. ABIH has indicated that if a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) attends an OSHA Education Center course, they are able to calculate the CM credit. Please visit abih.org/maintain-certification/cm-credit-education-events.

Georgia Tech Hazmat courses have been approved for Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Credit (Georgia P.O.S.T. Credit).

CEUs may be offered by other associations (inquire directly with those groups). Check with your credentialing organization to determine if our courses are accepted.

What is Georgia Tech Professional Education Cancellation Policy?Georgia Tech Professional Education reserves the right to substitute instructors, change course dates and locations, or cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen events. If Georgia Tech Professional Education must cancel a course, participants will be notified via email or phone, and will be given the option for a full refund or to transfer their registration to another course.
