Introduction

This guide shows you how we will assess clients occupations when they apply for disability benefits. It will cover the following benefits:

• Income Protection• Payment Protection• Total Permanent Disability – unable before age 60 to do

your own occupation ever again*• Waiver of Payment

We will use the customer’s job title and for some benefits, a breakdown of their occupational activities to assess the risk of providing disability related benefits.

We may also ask them to provide additional information, such as if the driving is essential to their occupation, if they use any hazardous substances, work at height etc.

For Waiver of Payment, we will ask for their job title and base our assessment on this.

For Income Protection, Payment Protection and Total Permanent Disability – unable before age 60 to do your own occupation ever again (referred to as Own Occupation) as well as providing their job title, we ask them to split their occupational activities into different tasks, such as;

Administration, clerical, managerialThis includes computer keyboard and mouse work, telephone non-sales duties, medical work as a GP, doctor, specialist or consultant

Skilled technical, light manual, supervisory in factories or shop floorThis includes driving, office-based engineering, veterinary or hairdressing duties, teaching/coaching, non-manual client or site visits, medical, dental or care work

Sales, shop or office based, sales representative, sales manager or assistantThis includes telesales

Manual skilled, light unskilled or factory work including light liftingThis includes farming, mechanical or non office-based engineering duties and skilled work in the building industry, e.g. carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying

Manual unskilled including heavy liftingThis includes labouring and unskilled building work

In this guide we have listed job titles alphabetically and have made some assumptions regarding the activities that will be involved in each job. Therefore, a final assessment of the clients occupation will take place once all relevant information has been submitted to us.

Income Protection and Payment Protection BenefitsFor income protection and payment protection cover, we place clients into occupation groups, that will, along with other factors such as their age, smoker status, termination age, and deferred period define the payment rate that they are charged. An explanation of each of the groups follows;

The special definition of disability for the Income Protection Plan and Payment Protection BenefitThe Income Protection and Payment Protection Benefit definition of disability is based on our experience of insuring customers with occupations which require an average level of fitness and health and are unlikely to give rise to medical conditions that prevent the continuation of the occupation.

Some occupations pose a higher risk and therefore we can’t offer them the standard definition of disability. Instead of declining, we provide cover, but use a special definition of disability.

What is the special definition of disability?If a customer suffers a ‘minor’ incapacity that prevents them from continuing their usual occupation, we will pay the benefit for a maximum of 12 months. At the end of the 12 months we would expect the customer to earn a living in another occupation. However, if the incapacity is such that they cannot work in a suitable occupation, this 12 month restriction does not apply and we will continue to pay the benefit.

Which occupations might have a special definition of disability applied?Occupations where a disability that might normally be considered ‘minor’, and prevents someone from carrying out their normal duties, for example, an airline pilot with vertigo.

Occupations known to be high pressure and/or have stressful environments and exhibit above average incidences of certain medical conditions, for example, stress related anxiety. For these occupations, the usual definition of disability would make the application unacceptable. By applying the special definition of disability, we are able to cover these occupations and charge the standard payment.

Group a1Very low level of risk, for example, accountants, solicitors, actuaries, barristers

Group a2Low levels of risk, for example, administrative/clerical occupations including GPs and highly qualified technicians

Group b1 Small risk, for example, light manual/skilled work, nurses, medical technicians, shopkeepers and foremen

Group b2 Medium risk, for example, skilled workers and supervisory staff in heavy industries, building industry workers, security guards and HGV drivers

Group cHigh risk, for example, unskilled workers in heavy industries, building industry workers, security guards and HGV drivers

Occupations

The following IPP occupation notes may apply to certain occupations:

a) A Special Definition of Disability will apply.

b) Usually the plan termination age will be

reduced to the figure shown.

c) The occupation group shown is for guidance

only as the occupation may cover more than one group. It may also be necessary to apply the Special Definition of Disability.

d) Please submit the following additional

information to Underwriting and note that it

may be necessary to change the deferred

period and/or the plan termination age:

– Details of work completed to date and

contracts for the future.

– Details of past, present and

expected earnings.

– A Special Definition of Disability may apply.

e) Deferred period of 12 months – we will only

cover non-duty related disability.

f) Minimum deferred period of three months.

g) Refer to Underwriting for extra possible rating

and submit an Aviation Questionnaire.

h) Maximum benefit of £6,000 a year. Level or

indexed during claim only.
