Rules for visiting the observation deck

For 18+ only. It has requested physical activity and mentally healthy. You may not be on observation deck under alcohol or drugs influence and if you feel afraid of height and enclosed space.

The climbing is carried out with the assistance of experienced instructors and it may only be used on condition:

• good weather (t °С from +5 to +30, no precipitation)• availability of comfortable sportswear and shoes• successful interview with the responsible employee of the museum

About the Monument The Motherland Monument is one of the visiting cards of Kyiv. The author of the

monument is the sculp-tor Vasyl Borodai. A huge number of sculptors, architects, scientists and different kinds of workers took part in creating of this building.

The project was realized at the Paris Commune Plant in Kyiv. The sculpture “Motherland” is a unique whole-welded metal structure consisting

of three layers: the basic steel carcass weighing more than 280 tonnes, the auxiliary carcass with plating of 108 tonnes and one and a half millimeter stainless steel coverage weighing 90 tonnes, which is made of 27 large-tonnage blocks.

The Special technology of welding was developed by the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kyiv. About 30 kilometers of the welding seams were made during the joint assembly and welding process. When you look at the sculpture, it’s hard to believe that a small shield has a size of 12 x 8 meters; sword length is 16 meters. On the edge of the sword there is a special device for damping of vibrations of wind loads.

For movement of the people and the technical service of the sculpture two unique inclined and vertical lifts were mounted. The majesty of monument is really impressive. The figure of a woman with a shield and a sword in her hands was installed on the tapered pedestal of 40 meters high (total height is 102 meters, weight is 500 tonnes), sculpture height is 62 meters. The sculpture as well as the Memorial in general is a complex mechanism.

For the purpose of the structural health monitoring the strict instrumental and geodetic observations are determined. The regular annual observations confirm the absence of any deviations from the dynamic equi-librium. According to the leading experts, the monument “Motherland” will stand more than 150 years. Time and again sculpture was denoted in various international and national ratings.

MemorialThe National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.The Memorial complex occupies the area of more than 11,24 hectares. The road to the main building starts from the former Moscow gates of Old Pechersk Fortress

of eighteenth century, where a multimedia project “Martirology of the victims in the battles for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine in the eastern terri-tories” is currently available. Here begins a wide lane, which opens a panoramic view of the museum town. There are 76 mm cannons produced in 1942 installed next to granite stairs. The path to the museum leads through the gallery where five-meter bronze high relief is represented. This composition reflects the courage of border forces, the bravery of those who stayed in the occupied territory, the devotion of Resistance movement members and rear workers. V. Borodai, V. Shvetsov and others sculptors were the au-thors of these compositions. The bowl of “Fire of Glory” (diameter is 16 meters) is situ-ated on the left side of the hill. The gallery leads to the main square of the Memorial, where sculpture compositions “The transfer of arms” (author – V. Vinaikin) and “Cross-ing of the Dnipro” (author – F. Sohoian) are situated. Square can accommodate about 30 thousand people during mass celebrations. In honor of national holiday related to the Second World War many events are celebrated here.

In the special area there is an exhibition of arms and military equipment: tanks, artil-lery guns and mortars, the legendary “Katiusha” (multiple rocket launchers), planes and others. Nearby there is other machinery, including BMP, BMD, (infantry fighting vehi-cles IFV) helicopter, artillery weapons which were used in armed conflicts of the second half of the twentieth century.

The visitors can explore Li-2 aircraft, Мі-24В helicopter, and МіG-23 jet fighter.
