Another Studio is an English craft-design practice creating original products for the desk, home and workplace. At the heart of the studio is the notion that a creative idea combined with playful material exploration will result in brilliant designs. A project is often started with a question they’re intrigued by. For example, the question: “how could you make a greeting card come alive?” resulted in the well-regarded PostCarden growing kit.It takes the form of a miniature brass pineapple-style plant pot, complete with a tiny living cactus or succulent. The body of the plant pot is made from a single sheet of etched brass, which was folded and shaped by hand to create a pineapple-like design. Each pot is 8 cm high and holds a cactus or succulent in a little 5.5 cm pot.

New Zealand designer Luke Calder has always been fascinated by globes and maps, exploring the true value of land and the experience of place. As a result, he creates exclusive handcrafted, gilded copper globes that embrace the spirit of minimalism. In his youth, Calder had a fascination with cultures far removed from his upbringing in Mt Roskill. He spent many hours looking through National Geographic magazines and referencing locations in an equally ancient atlas. This began his fascination with maps, globes and travel, which has continued with Luke collecting vintage tin globes, each unique in appearance with their own stories and history.Luke Calder‘s copper globes start off as two flat sheets of aircraft grade aluminium. They are hand spun to form two hemispheres, which are then welded together to form a complete sphere. Internally, two sealed bearings attached to the inner wall allow the globes to spin smoothly with the lightest touch. Once painted, Calder begins the process of gilding the copper land forms, resulting in a globe with incredibly detailed and accurate islands and continents. Each piece Calder creates is unique in its patina finish, which will change over time due to its sensibility to context and interactions of people with the item. The globes are finally fitted to a steel base, accurately reflecting the earth’s spin axis tilt of 23.5 degrees.

Lenka Míková

Often, the use of black in bathrooms can make them feel dark and closed in, but in this Prague apartment, local architect Lenka Míková combined black with brass, white, and wood to give it a contemporary, luxurious feeling.Black hexagonal tiles cover the walls and are only broken up by the brass taps above the bath and in the glass enclosed shower. The brass carries on through to the built-in backlit mirror surround and shelf, essentially highlighting them in a wall of black.A white sink, bath, and toilet add to the brightness of the bathroom, while a wood vanity, sliding door, and cabinetry add a softer, more natural touch to the room.

Melbourne studio Lightly has released a homeware range featuring spindly floor lamps shaped to resemble Pinocchio, and ceramics in a range of earthy hues. The Cinnamon Collection expands the studio’s range of handmade brass pieces with vintage-style office stationery—including scissors, bulldog clips and a card-holder—as well as tableware such as small bowls and trays.Highlights from the collection include the Pinocchio lamp, which has been in development since 2010. The light recreates the outline of a puppet’s stick arms and legs with its spindly branches and stem, while its cone-shaped lamp makes reference to the character’s distinctive nose.Brass features in accents added to the collection’s side tables, which rest on a trio of slender legs, and in the supporting stems of the Zenith table lamp. Its circular base is made from a loop of brass, while its domed shade is designed to evoke the arc of the moon’s journey throughout the night.

NAC Restaurant is the latest project estudiHac has developed in Ontinyent (Valencia). The main concept for this new interior project has been promoting the image of a specialist in the world of rice dishes and Mediterranean Tapeo restaurants.NAC is famous for its variety of specialised rice letters. This has been worked into a concept of textures and graphic elements inspired by the development of these dishes, with many unique details such as micro-perforated copper discs, warm clay textures and grey marble. This special palette of materials, colours and textures detailing inside gives a sense of refreshing and traditional NAC elegance. The front wall of the restaurant is an installation of more than 200 perforated copper discs that appear to float on the wall, together resembling a large palette for working on rice. This sculpture wall gives essence and personality to the restaurant.

London design studio Kinnersley Kent Design recently completed Bandol, a new 70-seat restaurant on Chelsea’s Hollywood Road, featuring copper, distressed oak, steel, concrete, brick, smoked glass and artful lighting, as well as a large central olive tree. When you first enter the restaurant, you have a clear sightline through to the back of the space. When you enter the bar area of the restaurant, there are small tables along the wall.A series of four cantilevered copper panels form the small tables, and continue one meter (three feet) up the wall. The tables are lit by custom copper pipe pendant lights. The bar area is lit by a display of 24 glass pendants of varying sizes, types and lengths. It is also home to a custom copper bar top.The flooring is aged oak, with hexagonal concrete tiles that surrounds the bar.Copper pendant lighting in the main restaurant space continues the feeling of warmth throughout.

American architect Carney Logan Burke has extended a house in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to provide its residents with a workspace that boasts sweeping views. The extension—known as Trader Studio—provides a home office connected to the main house, but located a few metres away to benefit from the extra peace and quiet. Its south and east walls are constructed from rammed earth. The technique involves densely compacting layers of soil inside formwork, creating thick partitions with a high thermal mass.Rammed earth was also recently used to build a house in a Portuguese vineyard and a meditation centre at Stanford University.Carney Logan Burke paired the material with bronze-clad windows and steel shingles, all chosen to contrast with the main house, which is built from logs in a style more typical of the region.Stained concrete is used for the floors, while copper panels cover the whole ceiling. The north wall of the office space is entirely glazed, so a picture of the forest and mountains beyond is framed from the desk.

Barber and Osgerby’s Universal Design Studio recently unveiled a new London boutique for the fashion brand J&M Davidson. Spread across two floors, the architects wanted to convey the brand’s signature shapes and colours by employing soft and feminine colours. Decked out in a muted palette of dusty taupe, earthy grey and blushing pink, the interiors are anchored by clean, minimalist lines, stone flooring and brushed brass fixtures. The centrepiece is a cantilevered staircase crafted from solid terrazzo marble, featuring a luxurious leather-wrapped handrail. Brushed brass fixtures feature across the store, including clothes rails and wall-mounted lighting. The terrazzo flooring continues throughout the space, coupled with bespoke cast-glass plinths and heavy concrete countertops. Ethereal qualities resonate further in the store’s soft, rounded fittings and vintage furniture pieces, sourced in collaboration with interior designer Nicholas Chandor.

In a recent collaboration with Ketel One Vodka for Alexander McQueen’s Sarabande educational foundation, Dutch artist and designer Tord Boontje has created a copper clad bar installation.Taking inspiration from a number of elements—including Dutch style, key design elements of Ketel One Vodka and Alexander McQueen designs—Boontje has created a unique yet practical artistic installation. With a curved wooden body covered in a skin of reflective copper scales, the bar station will be a permanent fixture in the Sarabande Studios. The studios, which provide young designers with opportunities they wouldn’t find elsewhere, will play host to a number of functions and events over the years, all of which will feature the scaled copper bar station as their striking backdrop.

Architecture 49 12

Heritage Space Canadian design team Architecture 49 recently refurbished a historic banking floor in central Montreal.A massive skylight with brass details illuminates the newly revitalised trading floor for the National Bank of Canada, which was formerly a “dark and uncomfortable” space. The room is an exceptional heritage space, with features such as columns, marble cladding, a ceiling lavishly decorated with gold and bronze leaf and a large skylight. Despite these rich details, the trading floor was dark and unwelcoming. It had been 20 years since the space was last renovated, and it needed to be modernised. The Montreal office of Architecture49 won the architectural contract to design a well-lit, comfortable, technologically modern space for 256 traders and managers. The integrity of the unique space had to be safeguarded at every stage from design to construction. The designers opted for the targeted use of colours and bronze elements as a means of highlighting the room’s historic character. The impressive glass skylight was cleaned, restored and fitted with more efficient lighting fixtures. It now delivers ample light to the floor. The restoration and enhancement of the ceiling details, columns and bronze railings finally returned the space—built in 1917—to its rightful glory.
