Objectives The First International Meeting on Environmental Biotechnology and Engineering (1IMEBE) will be held in September 6-8, 2004, in Mexico City, Mexico. Environmental problems require an interdisciplinary solution and both engineers and scientists require information on a wide range of issues. This conference promotes discussion and debate based on the sharing of experiences at an international level. Speakers and delegates can exchange up-to-date information, and consider the current status of, and future developments in several issues dealing with hot subjects of Environmental Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering. The broad background of our delegates together with the informal and friendly atmosphere of the Meeting makes the networking opportunities as important as the technical sessions. The 1 IMEBE will focus on many topical areas of knowledge and technology that demand attention at local and international levels. This Meeting is intended to provide delegates with up-to-date information on: advances in Remediation of Soils and Aquifers; Microbial Ecology and application of Molecular Biology to solve environmental problems; potential future issues in Waste Management and Treatment; innovations in technology and practical experiences with novel and proven technologies; among others. The main activities of the 1IMEBE will consist of: -Guest lectures -Oral Symposia -Oral Sessions -Poster Sessions -Roundtables -Short Courses -Competition of Best Presentations -Competition of Best Graduate Thesis 2002-2004 Themes Papers are invited on all aspects of Environmental Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering disciplines, and particular themes for this conference are as follows: -Soil and Sediment Remediation -Aquifer Remediation -Solid Waste Management and Treatment -Hazardous Waste Management and Treatment

Please be aware that in general, multiple presentations by the same and one registered author are not possible. Each different abstract should have a different registered author. Proceedings Acceptance letters will include information on submitting manuscripts in-extenso for publication in the Proceedings. THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR THE PROCEEDINGS PUBLICATION WILL BE JUNE 14, 2004. The Proceedings will be published as a CD volume. Publication in Journals Selected oral and poster presentations will be submitted to the following international journals for review and publication:

l Waste Management and Research (International Solid Waste Association, Denmark)

l Water Environment and Research (Water Environment Federation, USA).l Acta Biotechnologica (John Wiley, Germany). l Interciencia (The Journal of Science and Technology of the Americas,

Interciencia Association).

These journals have agreed to devote special issue numbers to our 1IMEBE, in 2005. Please note that all these journals are international, with a strict peer-reviewing process, and indexed in the Science Citation Index. Also, it is worth highlighting that Interciencia publishes the articles either in Spanish, Portuguese, or English. Instructions to authors of these journals will be available in the journals' links in our web site or provided by e-mail upon request. Authors of pre-selected articles will be asked to re-submit to us their manuscript, formatted according to the journal of their choice. THE DEADLINE FOR THIS RESUBMISSION WILL BE AUGUST 15, 2004.

Objectives

The First International Meeting on Environmental Biotechnology and Engineering (1IMEBE)will be held in September 6-8, 2004, in Mexico City, Mexico. Environmental problems requirean interdisciplinary solution and both engineers and scientists require information on a widerange of issues. This conference promotes discussion and debate based on the sharing ofexperiences at an international level. Speakers and delegates can exchange up-to-dateinformation, and consider the current status of, and future developments in several issues dealingwith hot subjects of Environmental Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering. The broadbackground of our delegates together with the informal and friendly atmosphere of the Meetingmakes the networking opportunities as important as the technical sessions.

The 1 IMEBE will focus on many topical areas of knowledge and technology that demandattention at local and international levels. This Meeting is intended to provide delegates withup-to-date information on: advances in Remediation of Soils and Aquifers; Microbial Ecologyand application of Molecular Biology to solve environmental problems; potential future issues inWaste Management and Treatment; innovations in technology and practical experiences withnovel and proven technologies; among others.

The main activities of the 1IMEBE will consist of:
