The grant requires a 10% local match by the HLSA and will fund a preliminary engineering and environmental study of the Markey wastewater treatment facil- ity. The treatment facility is located in Markey Township and is over 25 years old. “This grant is the first step towards updating the facility so it can serve the community for the next 20 years,” HLSA Chairperson Diane Randall said. The grant funding will allow the HLSA to prepare a “Project Plan” to identify all of the repair and upgrade needs at the treatment plant and evaluate several improvement options. “Once the authority selects a preferred option, we will conduct a public hearing to present our findings to the sewer cus- tomers,” Randall said. “If the authority decides to proceed with improvements, we will submit the Project Plan to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for additional project construc- tion grants and loans.” The study will be performed by Gos- ling Czubak Engineering Sciences, Inc., Traverse City. Randall said the grant money is expected in October. Houghton Lake Sewer Authority Receives Study Grant Prudenville resident June E. Walter “Luke” Lukasavage, 90, Benson, AZ, died July 19, 2013, at the VA Medical Cen-ter in Tucson, AZ, with his dear friend by his side.

A service was held July 25 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Benson. In-terment was in the Veterans Cemetery in Sierra Vista. Following was a gathering at the Benson VFW Post 6271, featuring a 21-gun salute.

He was born in Detroit July 22, 1922. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a para-trooper in September, 1942. He was a proud member of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles.” He was seriously wounded on Hell’s Highway in Holland. He received numerous awards and com-mendations, but he was most proud of his Purple Heart.

Upon returning home to Houghton Lake, he began a new chapter in his life. He loved all sports, but his favorite was fishing. No matter what season, he would fish.

Mr. Lukasavage was active in the VFW Post 4159, Roscommon, for many years. He held many important positions

and was named Michigan’s “Veteran of the Year” in 1986. One of his proud-est achievements was donating over 110 units of blood to the American Red Cross.

His love of life was never more evident than when he put on face paint and costumes as “Lonesome Luke” the clown. He cheered up patients at chil-dren’s hospitals, senior citizens and ful-filled any other request that was asked of him, always for free. He wrote and pub-lished his first children’s book.

He moved to warmer weather in Ben-son, AZ, around 1992, starting another new chapter in his life. There he became active in VFW Post 6271 and shared his humor and knowledge with any veteran who needed it. He then wrote his second book and had it published.

He was known for never meeting a stranger, no matter where he went, will-ing to give a person the shirt off his back. He loved to learn and he read anything he could. He touched many lives in his almost 91 years and was considered a soldier to the end.

The Houghton Lake Sewer Authority has been awarded a $67,800 grant from the Michigan Department of Environ-mental Quality.

The grant requires a 10% local match by the HLSA and will fund a preliminary engineering and environmental study of the Markey wastewater treatment facil-ity. The treatment facility is located in Markey Township and is over 25 years old.

“This grant is the first step towards updating the facility so it can serve the community for the next 20 years,” HLSA Chairperson Diane Randall said.

The grant funding will allow the HLSA to prepare a “Project Plan” to

identify all of the repair and upgrade needs at the treatment plant and evaluate several improvement options.

“Once the authority selects a preferred option, we will conduct a public hearing to present our findings to the sewer cus-tomers,” Randall said. “If the authority decides to proceed with improvements, we will submit the Project Plan to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for additional project construc-tion grants and loans.”

The study will be performed by Gos-ling Czubak Engineering Sciences, Inc., Traverse City. Randall said the grant money is expected in October.
