Toenhancepatientandcommunityeducationandtoinformmothers-to-beandtheirspousesaboutprenatal,antenatal,intrapartumandpostpartumcare,theWomen’sHealthCenterattheAmericanUniversityofBeirutMedicalCenter(AUBMC)heldthefirstinaseriesofworkshopstitled“MyPathtoMotherhood,”atthePhoeniciaHotelinBeirutwith140attendeessharingexperiencesandcontributingtotheinteractivesessions.ChairmanoftheDepartmentofOBS/GYNatAUBMC,Dr.AnwarNassar,welcomedtheparticipantsbeforethelaunchingoftheworkshop,organizedontheoccasionofInternationalWomen’sDay(March8th).ExpertsfromacrossthediversebranchesoftheAUBMCfamilyincludingDepartmentsofOBS/GYN,Nutrition,Anesthesiology,PsychiatryandtheHaririSchoolofNursinggavelecturesontopicsincludingpreconceptionalcounseling,nutritionduringpregnancy,intrapartumexpectations,epiduralanesthesia,postpartumcare,breastfeeding,postpartumbluesanddepressionandbirthcontroloptions.

December18,2013wasadaytorememberatAUBMC.Thedaywitnessedtheinaugurationofthenewly-renovatedDr.KhaledIdrissDeliverySuite.ThroughthecontinuedgeneroussupportoftheIdrissfamily,theDeliverySuiteunderwentathoroughface-lift.Thismajorrenovationintroducedextraordinarystyleandwarmthtotheunit,andhasalreadybeenwellreceivedbyalmostallprospectiveparentswhohaveentrustedAUBMCwiththebirthoftheirpreciousones.Additionally,thenewunitfeaturestwolabor,delivery,andrecovery(LDR)rooms.Thisapproach,whichallowsparturientstolabor,deliver,andrecoverinthesameroom,hasbeenacornerstoneofmodernobstetrics.ThegatheringincludedPresidentPeterDorman,DeputyVP/Dean,Dr.ZiadGhazzal,representingDeanMohamedSayegh,AUBMCdirector,Dr.AdnanTahir,ChiefofStaff,Dr.HassanElSolh,AssociateDeanforFacultyAffairs,Dr.GhaziZaatari,Idrissfamily,AUBMCfaculty,DepartmentofOBS/GYNandfriends.

TheDepartmentofOBS/GYNhastouchedthelivesofthousandsofpregnantwomenovertheyears.Throughthenewstate-of-theartDr.KhaledIdrissDeliverySuite,westrivetocontinuethislegacyinamoreelegantandmodernwaythaneverbefore!

CHRISTMAS DINNERTheDepartmentofOBS/GYNmadesurethateveryonehadaMerryChristmasbyhostingitsthirdAnnualChristmasDinner.Againthisyear,theinvitationwasopentoallstaffacrossalltheDepartment’sunits.Atotalof165physicians,nurses,technicians,administrators,assistantsandclerksattendedtheeventwhichwasheldatthe“LeMaillonClub.”InviteesenjoyedanexquisitedinnerwithadiverselivemusicshowwhichincludedChristmascarols,internationalandorientalsongsanddancers!BecauseChristmasisatimetorememberthelessfortunate,$1810wasraisedfromthesaleoftombolaticketstosupporttheHERFund,acharitablefundraisinginitiativeatAUBMCthathelpscoverthemedicalexpensesofneedywomenwhosufferfromcriticalandlifethreateningobstetricalandgynecologicalconditions.

Dr.GeorgeR.Saade,agraduateoftheDepartmentofOBS/GYNatAUBMCin1987,hasbeenrecentlyappointedtotheNationalAdvisoryChildHealthandHumanDevelopmentCounciloftheNationalInstitutesofHealth.Ofthe18-membercouncil,Dr.Saadeisoneof12individualsselectedfromtheleadingrepresentativesofthehealthandscientificdisciplinesinUSArelevanttomaternalandchildhealth.Inthisrole,Dr.SaadewillworkwithothercouncilmemberstoadviseandconsultwiththedirectoroftheNationalInstituteofChildHealthandHumanDevelopmentonresearch,supportactivitiesandfunctionsoftheinstitute.Dr.Saade,JennieSealySmithDistinguishedChairintheUniversityofTexasMedicalBranchDepartmentofOBS/GYN,isconsideredoneoftheworld’sleadingexpertsinMaternalFetalMedicine.Hisbasicscienceresearchfocusesonfetal-maternalphysiologyanddevelopmentalprogrammingwhichhasculminatedinmorethan300articlespublishedinpeer-reviewedjournals.Heisalsoinvolvedinanumberofmulticentertrialsaddressingvariouscomplicationsofpregnancy,includinghypertension,pretermbirthandintrapartumhypoxia,andhasbeenvotedasBestDoctorandselectedtoSuperDoctorsseveralyearsinarow.

Dr.ElieHobeikareceivedhisMDdegreefromtheLebaneseUniversityin2002followedbythreeyearsofresidencytraininginOBS/GYNatAUBMC(2002-2005),followedbyafour-yearresidencyatEasternVirginiaMedicalSchool(2005-2009).Duringhisresidency,Dr.Hobeikaacquiredskillsinminimallyinvasivesurgery,robotics,pelvicreconstructivesurgeryandurogynecology.Dr.HobeikawasappointedasanattendingphysicianattheDepartmentofOBS/GYNatSutterCoastHospital(2009-2014)whereheservedasMedicalDirectoraftergoingthroughmultipleleadershiplabs,andsafetytrainings.

Dr.HobeikaisaDiplomateoftheAmericanBoardofOBS/GYNandafellowoftheACOG.Heisalsoamemberofseveralprofessionalsocieties,includingAmericanAssociationofGynecologicLaparoscopists,AmericanInstituteofUltrasoundinMedicineandSocietyofLaparoendoscopicSurgeons.InadditiontohisclinicaldutieswhichwillbeprimarilyinaffiliatedKeserwanMedicalCenter,hewillbeinvolvedinresearchandtheeducationofmedicalstudentsandresidents.PleasejoinusinwelcomingDr.HobeikatoourDepartment.

AftergraduatingfromAUB,Dr.JoelleAounpursuedaoneyearresidencyintheDepartmentofOBS/GYNin2009-2010atAUBMCandiscurrentlyafourthyearresidentatRiversideOBS/GYNresidencyprogram,NewportNews,VA.ThismonthshewasfeaturedinReutersHealthforastudythatshepublishedinthegreenJournal(ObstetricsGynecology),ajournalwiththesecondhighestimpactfactorintheOBS/GYNdiscipline.Herstudyshowedthatintrauterinedevices,usedforcontraception,areaseffectiveforadolescentsastheyareforwomenintheir20sandearly30s,andcomplicationratesaresimilarlylow.WeareproudofyouJoelle.

ACADEMIC NEWS• Dr.AbdallahAdrawasaninvitedspeakerinthe6thadvancedIanDonaldUltrasoundcourseinOBS/GYN,fromDecember6-8,2013heldinAthens,Greece.Hegavetwopresentationsentitled“Valueofantenataldiagnosisinplacentaaccreta”&“Softmarkersoffetalaneuploidyinthe2ndtrimester.”

• Dr.AdrawasalsoaninvitedspeakerattheInternationalAnnualMeetingofLSOG,heldonNovember15-17,2013,wherehedeliveredalectureentitled“Preventingthefirstcesareandelivery”.Inaddition,hewasthecoursedirectorofapre-congressCMEaccreditedcourseentitled“HotTopicsinDay-to-DayObstetrics.”Dr.AdrawasalsoaninvitedfacultytotheHemostasisRounds,amultidisciplinaryactivityorganizedbytheCMEofficeatAUBMC,onchallengesinthediagnosisandmanagementofbleedingemergencies.

• Dr.AnwarNassarwasaninvitedspeakeratthe5thAnnualPediatricsUpdateSymposiumheldinIssamFaresLectureHallonFebruary28-March1,2014wherehedeliveredwithDr.RoseMarieBoustanyalectureentitled“Trisomy21Trilogy:BeforeandAfterBirthandAllLifeLong.”

• Dr.JohnnyAwwadwasinvitedtojointhefacultyoftheHarvardMacyInstituteinBostonforathree-weekseminar:“ProgramforEducatorsintheHealthProfessions”inJanuaryandMay2014.Dr.Awwadhasdirectedapre-congresscourseatthe“EuropeanSocietyofHumanReproductionandEmbryology”ESHRE2013inLondon:“OptimizingIVFOutcome”;duringwhichhepresentedonthreetopics.Hehasalsobeeninvitedtochairandcoordinateapre-congresscourseatthe“EuropeanSocietyofHumanReproductionandEmbryology”ESHRE2014inMunich:“Fertilitypreservationinwomen:Factsanddilemmas”,duringwhichhewillbepresentingalecture.Inaddition,Dr.Awwadhasbeeninvitedtochairandcoordinateapost-graduatecourseatthe“AmericanSocietyforReproductiveMedicine”ASRM2014inHonolulu,Hawaii;duringwhichhewillbepresentingonthreetopics.

MEET THE ALUMNI

LocatedintheSabraandShatilarefugeecamp,oneofthemostunderprivilegedareasofthecityofBeirut,istheTahaddiclinic.Tahaddiclinicwasinitiallyestablishedtoprovidegeneralmedicalservicesforthoseinneed,especiallypediatriccare.However,withtheSyrianconflict,manyofthefemalerefugeessoughtmedicalcareattheclinic.Andthusasofthisacademicyear2013-2014,OBS/GYNresidentsstartedtheirweeklyvisitstotheclinic.Servicesprovidedincludeprenatalandgeneralgynecologycare.TahaddiisagreatopportunityfortheOBS/GYNresidentstogetmoreinvolvedinvolunteerworkandtohelpthosewhoarelessfortunate.

ThefourthclinicalseminaroftheWHC“Vaccinationprotocolsacrossadolescent,maternalandreproductivehealth:WhateveryOBS/GYNshouldknow?”washeldonFebruary13,2014incollaborationwithLSOG.Dr.AnwarNassaremphasizedonthegrowingimportanceofhavingavaccinationprotocolinwomen’shealthcaresettings,andthatWHCisadoptingafullrangevaccinationagendaforwomenofallages.Threepresentationsweregiven:Dr.AliKhalilupdatedtheaudienceaboutHPVvaccinationforthepreventionofcervicalcancer,Dr.IhabUstahighlightedthelatestrecommendationsofTdap(Tetanus,DiphtheriaandPertussis)andFluvaccinationduringpregnancy,andDr.ElieHobeikareviewedthelatestCDCrecommendedimmunizationprotocolforadultwomen.Theseminarwasthenfollowedbyadiscussionandacocktail.

*Dr.AlfredAbuhamadreceivedtheMDdegreefromAUBanddidhisresidencytraininginOBS/GYNattheUniversityofMiami(UM).HepursuedafellowshipinMaternal-FetalMedicine(MFM)atUMandanotherinUltrasoundandPrenatalDiagnosisatYaleUniversity.Dr.AbuhamadcurrentlyservesasProfessorandChairmanoftheDepartmentofOBS/GYNandViceDeanforClinicalAffairsatEasternVirginiaMedicalSchoolinNorfolk,Virginia.HeisthecurrentChairoftheNationalPatientSafetyCouncilinWomen’sHealthCare,servesontheBoardoftheSocietyofUltrasoundinMedicalEducation,andontheExecutiveCommitteesoftheInternationalSocietyofUltrasoundinOBS/GYNandtheSocietyofMFM.Heistheimmediatepast-PresidentoftheAmericanInstituteofUltrasoundinMedicineandtheNationalPerinatalQualityForum.Heholdsthreepatentsandhaspublishedmorethan100peerreviewedmanuscripts,receivednumerousnationalawardsandhasauthoredthreetextbooksinfetalechocardiographyandofficeprocedures.HeestablishedtheInternationalSocietyofUltrasoundinOBS/GYNOutreachCommitteeandledseveralultrasoundtrainingmissionstothedevelopingworld.Dr.Abuhamadiswellknowninternationallyforhisworkinultrasound,prenataldiagnosis,globaloutreachandpatientsafety.

*Dr.AminJurdireceivedtheMDdegreefromAUBin2005.HethencompletedhisOBS/GYNresidencyatAUBMCin2009.Aftergraduation,hedidatwo-yearfellowshipinReproductiveEndocrinologyandInfertilityattheUniversityofGlasgow,UK.HereturnedbacktoLebanonin2012andstartedhiscareeratBellevueMedicalCenterandEveFertilityCenter.In2013,hewasappointedastheChairpersonoftheDepartmentofOBS/GYNatAinWazeinHospital,whereheisintheprocessofestablishingaReproductiveMedicineUnit.Dr.JurdialsodedicatessomeofhistimetoteachingcoursesattheLebaneseUniversityandatWestwoodschoolthatwasestablishedbackin1986byhislatefatherandheisalsoontheboardoftrustees.Dr.Jurdihasalwaysenjoyedtravelling.Hisrealpassionishistoryandstudyingdifferentculturesofcountrieshevisitswheneverhefindsfreetime.

Q: What are your main duties?A:ThereareseveralambitiousideasthatbasicallyaimatshapingWomen’s

Healthasacomprehensiveintegratedpracticediscipline.Hence,IaminvolvedintheintegrationandexpansionofclinicalservicesattheWomen’sHealthCenter,organizationofclinicalseminarsandpublicoutreachactivities,andinresearchbasedonregistry,utilization,andprevention.

Q: Prior to joining this Department, what were you doing?A:PrivateclinicalpracticeatTradHospital,andcoordinatorofOBS/GYN

servicesatBekaaHospital.IamalsoaseniorlecturerintheFacultyofHealthSciencesatAUBsince1997.

frameworkofhumanrightsandsocialjustice,withapoliticalcharge.
