Education and basic awareness drive at Shantipalli, Bhubaneswar
Shantipalli is a big slum situated at Shahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar, near ESI Hospital. The total population of the slum is around
3500 people where 1296(42.66%) of them are literate. The male to female ratio is almost 50:49. The major part of the male
population consists of daily labourers and that of female population consists of day workers. Looking at the low literacy level,
we have planned an education drive with the help of Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar, New Horizon (NGO).From the statistics, it
is observed that women in the age group 15 -30 are almost double of the men. Hence, as a matter of fact more women need to
be motivated and educated. Our involvement in the education drive will span across two months post which this will be taken
forward by the NGO. During this span, we tend to raise the literacy bridging the gender literacy gap and motivate the local
communities by involving them in the drive. The emphasis will be on maximum enrolment of girl children to eradicate the
problem of prevalent gender disparity in the region. Last but not the least, we would motivate the residents to avoid social
issues like dowry problems and sex exploitation due to illiteracy and monetary dependency. This will be achieved by various
steps which are mentioned below.
We need to first build connect with the people of Shantipalli. We are in talks with Rotary Club, Bhubaneswar the said proposal. After the initial icebreaking, we will conduct an informal assessment of the woman of the people to develop an understanding
of their awareness level. In between, we will try to raise some funds for the drive by approaching the corporate and other nodal
governmental agencies. Then, we will start the process of continuous awareness building and education. We plan to develop a
sustainable model which can go on even when we are not around. We will train people on basic mathematics, health and
hygiene, and promote the spirit of education among children there, so that they choose to go to school rather than drop out at an
early stage of their life.
At the end we want to develop a self sustaining model for enabling people of Shantipalli to use basic education in their
everyday life. With basic mathematical knowledge they would be able to avoid being cheated during payment of wages or
during other financial transactions. People will become aware of cleanliness and maintain personal hygiene, which would helpthem lead a healthier life. Lastly, we want the children be motivated to continue their education in the long run.
