A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Whew.

The state of Florida had four genre events last month.

They were all interesting.

Animation Supercon had most of the stars of Futurama

and the show’s head writer. The convention also had game show

host extraordinare Nick Roche. I got to be Nick’s Vanna for his

Wheel of Fortune. It was cool to see people playing the new

Rock Star with the Beatles.

Spooky Empire had a track devoted to writing and

literature. Owl Goingback helped organize this track. Max

Brooks, writer of World War Z, gave a talk which was standing

room only.

Necronomicon was a blast. Thanks to Patty, Steve, and

Arthur for help with the room party. It was great to see our

friends at Stone Hill. The trivia team Arthur and I were on won

this year with a comfortable margin. Great panels, great guests,

great company. (Check out the pictures on page 3)

Hurricane Who seemed to go well. I attended a fan

panel and a writers panel On Friday. There were a lot of

costumes. The panel on Doctor Who comics was really good

with writer Tony Lee. Dr. Lynnette Potter talked about the

mysteries of Lost. I saw a one man show called Moths Ate My

Doctor Who Scarf by Toby Hadoke. It was a very funny and

poignant look at Doctor Who fandom. I had a good time

working and attending the Guardians of Gallifrey/OASFiS party.

As I write this I plan to go see Louise Jameson and see a talk on

the great Douglas Adams. This was very good for a first time

convention.

Next month maybe some book reviews and election

info.

Barry Letts

One of the guests at my first convention, Omnicon II,

was Barry Letts. I was told that he was the Executive Producer

of Doctor Who. I kind of knew what a producer was from Star

Trek. I saw Letts do his Q&A session with his good friend and

script editor Terrance Dicks. He was very interesting and funny.

what an important man I had met. Barry Letts was the producer

of Doctor Who between 1969-1974. Under his direction the

show became an enormous hit. He and Dicks got really good

stories out of the writers and directors. Letts also cast Tom

Baker as The Doctor. Baker would become on of the most

popular and successful Doctors.

I really liked the inside info Letts gave out in the DVD

commentaries and documentaries. This showed his love and

respect for the show and his work.
