OHIO REGULATION
Ohio Automobile Insurance Planwww.assignedriskohio.com
Ohio FAIR Planwww.ohiofairplan.com
Ohio Insurance Guaranty Associationwww.ohioga.org
Ohio Department of Insurancewww.insurance.ohio.gov
The Ohio Automobile Insurance plan was organized on August 16, 1943. It is an agreement among insurancecompanies to provide automobile insurance to those unable to secure it on their own. This plan applies tobodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, physical damage coverages and any othercoverages required by law.
The Ohio FAIR Plan is supported by all insurance companies licensed to transact fire insurance businesswithin the state. Each company shares in the losses of the plan in direct proportion to its premium volume ofbusiness in the state. The Ohio FAIR Plan was established in 1968 to provide essential insurance coveragefor eligible property unable to obtain insurance through the voluntary market. Initially, the plan applied to alimited number of metropolitan areas. By 1977 the entire state was eligible for basic property insurance, including farm coverage, through the plan. Ohio's FAIR Plan is one of 32 such programs operating throughoutthe U.S.
Each state's insurance department monitors the financial health of insurers licensed to transact business inthe state. The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) is the state's regulator of insurance transactions. Toassure that policyholders aren't abandoned, each state has a guaranty association to ensure payment topolicyholders who have claims against insolvent insurers.
To assist regulators in monitoring the financial condition of insurers, all licensed insurance companies filedetailed annual financial statements with state insurance departments. The Ohio Insurance GuarantyAssociation ensures payment (up to $300,000) to those policyholders who have claims against the insolventcompany. These could be typical insurance claims from damages caused by a covered peril under aninsurance policy or a claim against the insurer for unearned premiums.
The Ohio Department of Insurance regulates the insurance industry in the Buckeye state. From licensing torate filings, the department oversees all lines of insurance operations.

Like most true believers in insurance, Chris Amrhein stumbled upon this business accidentally; specifically, aftergraduating from college and needing a job. Those years found him traveling about the countryteaching seminars on everything from agency management to the claims made CGL. It has also taught him theabsolute truth of Jimmy Buffet's famous observation about those who make a career of the property-casualtybusiness: "If we weren't all crazy we would go insane."
Amrhein is now a speaker, consultant, seminar leader and training developer, and resides in Lorton, Virginia. Hisemail address [email protected] and website www.insuranceisfun.com, say it all.
