Dean of Students [email protected] SCHOOL OVERVIEW Oaks Christian School is a private, independent, college preparatory school located in the beautiful, suburban city of Westlake Village, CA (40 miles northwest of Los Angeles). The school was founded in the fall of 2000 and graduated its first class in June of 2003. In the fall of 2011, Oaks Christian Online School was launched with the purpose of providing a Christian, college preparatory program without geographic limitations. Understanding the growing trend of online education, Oaks Christian School desires to be in the forefront, setting the standards of excellence in online education while training “minds for leadership and hearts for service.” ACADEMIC PROGRAM Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) provides a comprehensive, college preparatory program for full-time, online students as well as part-time, online courses for the main- campus students of Oaks Christian School and other high school programs. The program is based on standards and best practices as outlined by the International Association for K12 Online Learning as well as the WASC regional accrediting agency. Best practices for OCO include weekly, virtual instructional periods, proctored mid-terms and finals, and online course content that is aligned with the content and rigor of Oaks Christian main-campus courses. All core courses are also University of California and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) approved. MISSION STATEMENT “To dedicate ourselves to Christ in the pursuit of academic excellence, artistic expression, and athletic distinction, while growing in knowledge and wisdom through God’s abundant grace.” GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) is a fully accredited, diploma granting institution. Full-time students are required to complete 23.0 units in order to receive an OCO diploma. Students must complete the last 5 units (equivalent to 1 full year), while with OCO. Students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. An honors diploma will also be awarded to students who maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher and have completed honors and AP level courses. A typical course of study would include: English: 4 years Mathematics: 3 years (through Algebra 2) Lab Science: 3 years Foreign Language: 3 years (through 3rd language level or 2 languages for 2 years) History: 3.5 years Bible: 4 semesters Fine Arts: 1 year (continuous course) Physical Education: 4 semesters Health: 1 semester Spiritual Life: 4 years College Counseling: 4 years Electives: 1 year

ADVANCED COURSE OFFERINGS

Students are restricted to 3 Honors or AP classes per year unless they are granted permission to take additional courses by petition.

Students also have the opportunity to take dual-enrollment courses in the 11th and 12th grades through Berklee College of Music, Grand Canyon University and King’s College in NYC.

In 2016 there were 22 AP exams taken in 6 subjects. The average score was a 3.9.

FACULTY

Oaks Christian Online School (OCO) employs Christian teachers, and 74% of OCO teachers hold advanced degrees in their subject area. The majority of OCO teachers also hold a single-subject teaching credential and degree in their teaching area as well as online high school teaching experience.

STUDENT LIFE AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Oaks Christian Online (OCO) students can participate in student government and other club opportunities. Many of our students have chosen to attend OCO due to their pursuits outside the classroom. Our students are engaged in a variety of endeavors, including high levels of athletics, acting, music and the arts.

Community service is at the heart of OCO. All students are required to complete 20 hours of service each year.
