As a social case worker, Penny has had many experiences dealing with the devastating effects of these problems. Please join us for this important program. . Please also remember to bring items for the South Suburban Crisis Center. Many of the women helped through our donations are victims of the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. Paper products, personal care items and clean, used clothing are always welcome. If you are unable to attend dinner, plan on joining us for the program and business meeting. Our fashion was a huge success although it followed the worstwinter storm of the season. The wonderful entertainment byMaurice, the inspirational words by Gayle Guthrie, and the beautifulfashions of Annie's Ltd. and Bellissimo combined to make this eventvery special. Many, many thanks to all who sold tickets, to thosewho donated and solicited raffle prizes, and to our beautiful models.The greatest reward will come in August when we are again able topresent our scholarships. Special thanks to Ginger Morgan, LucyCrocilla and Andrea Wulff for co-chairing Imagine You.

Connections and our very successful/DCProgram certainly helped the DistrJct win that award. StephanieGrayson (Chicago Heights), our District 2 IDC winner, was therunner-up in the state competition. Seems hard to believe the summer is quickly corning to aclose. We hope you all had a restful, albeit wann summer.Plans have been made for an exciting new year. As weapproach the year 2000, there are many issues still facingwomen in the work place. There will be important electionsthis year and there is even talk of putting the Equal RightsAmendment on the table again. BPW is the best place tokeep up with all these issues. Growth Thru Diversity is theemphasis for the lllinois Federation ofBPW. With the helpof everyone in our local, we can grow, personally andprofessionally.

Our two summer events were very successful. Thanks toGeorgine Deacon for making all the arrangements for thetrip to the Empress Casino. We haven't heard of any earlyretirements, but everyone had a great time.

Thanks to Virginia Berna for hosting our Annual GardenParty. Thanks also to Jo Anne and Mary Anne Bart fortheir help with reservations and everyone who broughtgoodies. It is always a delight to see our scholarshiprecipients and their families.

We appreciate all the work ofJean Laird and thescholarship committee for excellent choices. Our returningrecipients are Mary Oliver, studying nursing in Joliet; AnneButler, at Illinois State; and Kelly Galassi, in education atSt. Mary's at Norte Dame, Ind. Our two new recipients areChristina Zwirkoski, who will be going to Olivet Universityto study language arts and Jennifer Wittleder who will begoing to University of lllinois to study business.

At the start of our 1998-1999, we are still looking for a fewcommittee chairs: Chamber of Commerce Liaison and YoungCareerist. If you are interested in helping please callCathryn lana.

On October 20th, District II presented Connections for

Women. While we did not have quite as many participants,the event itself was very successful. The Radisson HotelAlsip were very gracious hosts. Once again, the efforts ofall four locals were rewarded, Kudos to Linda Kozloski andher committee.

At the District II, the next night, our own Gaile Sprisslerwon the IDC speak-off Gaile will represent our District atthe lllinois State Convention this spring. Congratulations!'Lucky Dolittle, second vice-president of the lllinoisFederation ofBPW was the guest speaker.

She will discuss theproperties and uses ofechinacea, St. John's Wort, garlic,ginseng and ginko bilobo. On Monday, November 23 rd at7:00pm, Robert Walsh, ofthe Cook County Sheriff'sDepartment will speak on Safety Awareness, both personaland property.
