From the Pastor’s Pen…
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children- of all ages. Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth.” Those words have been heard for decades when the circus comes to town and the big show begins.
Children are wide-eyed by death-defying acts, parading animals, and entertaining clowns. Nearly all the senses are involved with sights,
sounds, smells, and emotions as a good time is had by all. The experience is so good that you want to leave with a memento, tell everyone about it, and make plans to return again.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children- of all ages, there’s
a show on the horizon that dwarfs “the greatest show on earth.” It’s THE event that changes lives and has the potential to change the world: The Resurrection of Jesus. It is my prayer that you will
experience Jesus in a very real way this Easter season. It may mean giving up something as a spiritual sacrifice. It may mean opening your
life to God’s direction in a new and exciting way. It may mean opening your Bible and following the sacrificial steps of our Savior as gave up His life for you and me. Thankfully, His death is not the end of the
story, for the end is just the beginning. As Jesus rose from the grave he gave to all who would call upon His name the gift of everlasting life.
And what He gives, He does not take away.
In preparation for Easter we will be experiencing The Bible in a very special way. The husband and wife team of Roma Downey and Mark Burnett have produced the miniseries, The Bible, for the History
Channel. It will be shown on Sunday evenings in March. We will be looking at the same themes in worship on Sunday mornings, as well as
in a group study time on Monday nights beginning March 4. The study will begin at 7 pm with a light supper served beginning at 6:30. Join us in worship and fellowship as we look at God’s love letter to us.
By the time you read these words, preparations will be in full swing for
our annual fish fry and auction for missions on Saturday, March 2. Don’t miss it. Invite and bring a friend for a non-threatening entry point to the ministry and love experienced at Oakland Baptist Church...
Blessings to you... He is risen, He is risen, indeed!!
It’s a joy to serve Jesus as your pastor, Rev Kev

Throughout the year, the Oakland Baptist WOM Groups will be collecting items for the Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes. Specific items have been designated for each month. For March, we will be collecting Hair accessories: combs, brushes, hair clips, hair bows, hair bands, etc. The collection boxes will be on the tall table across from the old kitchen. Please place your items in
these boxes. If you need assistance getting your items downstairs, please see a member of the WOM Evening Group – Teresa Groome, Pat Groome, Lesley Alford, Sherry Alston, Shirley Bath, Angie Wright or Sharon Kincaid. In November, we will sponsor a Church-wide packing party. Information regarding this event will be posted as we get closer to the date. Thank you for supporting our on-going mission project.
MORE THAN NETS
Virginia Baptists have entered into a 2 year agreement with the Ghana Baptist Convention
to complete the “More Than Nets” project. Our goals are simple yet significant. We want
to significantly reduce the cases of malaria in a northern region of Ghana known as Yendi.
We will do so by distributing 100,000 chemically treated mosquito nets within the Yendi
municipality. We will also provide vital education for the proper use of the mosquito net
as well as additional education on health, awareness and prevention of malaria.
At the same time we will assist the Ghana Baptist Convention in meeting one of their visions by planting a church in
each village in the Yendi municipality. There are approximately 454 communities in Yendi with 145 already have a
church so we would need to plant 309 new churches.
For the low cost of $10, you can provide an entire family safety from deadly malaria and help plant churches. For
more information, please see the Goshen November newsletter or speak with any WOM member. May God bless
this ministry.
The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering® supports missionaries in North America---right here in the United States and Canada. People like Kay Bennett at the Baptist Friendship House in New Orleans, where she ministers to homeless women and children. The Super Bowl was held in New Orleans this year. Kay states that during events like the
Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, sex trafficking increases. Homeless mothers and young children are especially vulnerable to predators. In the Baptist Friendship House’s transitional housing programs, women gain skills and find jobs. Please pray for Kay and her ministry. The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering® is much more than an offering envelope and an annual missions-giving emphasis. When people give to the offering, 100 percent of their gift will be transformed into missionary salaries and ministry supplies. Those missionaries and supplies will help others hear the message of Christ and respond in faith to His offer of salvation. Time and again our missionaries relate how the offering is their lifeblood. They know that behind each penny given, there is a Southern Baptist who believes in what they do and are affirming the need to equip them to share the gospel with those who need a Savior. Week of Prayer Guides and Offering Envelopes are in the vestibule. Oakland’s goal is $1,000.
