Running through this year’s concert season is Flying the Flag, a series exploring the concept of nationhood and music. Spanning two centuries, it explores widely contrasting national styles, lost nations and turning points in nations’ histories, both musical and political, exemplified by Beethoven’s revolution-era Symphony No. 3. The series starts, however, with Rameau, whose distinctive style influenced French and European music through the 18th century and beyond – and concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, the result of a commission to write a symphony in a new ‘American’ style. Complementing the series is our annual study day, allowing you to explore Flying the Flag in more depth.

Our study day this year gives you a chance to delve deeper into our season theme of Flying the Flag. In the morning session we’ll take a look at a variety of composers and national styles, before moving on to an in-depth look at Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and the Russian identity to complement our concert featuring the music of these composers on 15 January. In the afternoon we’ll move on to France, looking at just what makes French music sound French, how the rhythm of the French language influences French musical style and the international impact of French composers such as Rameau. The afternoon session will include vocal performance to highlight aspects of the study day, as well as a demonstration of Baroque dance.

CONCERT 1FLYING THE FLAG: L’AMOUR—Thursday 9 October 2014Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm

A double bill of short operas by one of the Baroque’s great radicals, Rameau, including his rarely performed 1754 version of Anacréon.

Both operas tonight explore the power of the arts: Pigmalion finds love through sculpture, and in Anacréon, Batile and Chloé fall in love after having been inspired by the beauty of Anacréon’s poetry.

A radical innovator, later accepted as a true French great, Rameau’s music still speaks to audiences with incredible directness and clarity today, making these two performances, performed tonight with Baroque dance from Les Plaisirs des Nations, an all-too-rare must-see.

Tonight we touch on three nationalities, two radicals and one lost genius. The lost genius is George Onslow. This Anglo-French composer was a huge figure in his time, indeed nicknamed ‘The French Beethoven’. The radicals are Berlioz and Beethoven – Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was shocking in its day, one critic calling it a ‘crass monster’. Today it vies for status as one of the greatest symphonies ever written.

A fascinating mix of Italian and French operatic styles and a work of high drama, Les Martyrs started life as a very different opera – Poliuto, composed for Naples where it fell foul of the censors on account of its religious content. 

In response, Donizetti refashioned the work for Paris – adding an elaborate and startling overture, ballet music, new arias and innovative ensemble pieces.

Conducted by Sir Mark Elder, Opera Rara’s Artistic Director and OAE Principal Artist, this performance will be realised by a superb cast featuring Michael Spyres, Joyce El-Khoury and David Kempster, and is the latest instalment of the highly successful collaboration between the OAE and Opera Rara.

Supercharged with musical inspiration, it’s no surprise that Handel’s Messiah was one of the first pieces of music to be ‘revived’ back in 1784. Until then classical music, believe it or not, was always about what was new, and not what was old.

Handel’s extraordinary musical vision was luckily not lost to music’s back catalogue, and tonight’s concert is the perfect way to experience this visionary, ecstatic piece of music, with a superb line-up of soloists. What better way to start the festive season?

Famed violinist Richard Tognetti, Artistic Director of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, leads us in music ranging from the zesty freshness of Haydn through to the rich sonorities and melancholic beauty of Dvořák’s Serenade. Along the way there are two rare and intriguing miniatures – Elgar’s achingly beautiful Sospiri and Grieg’s intriguingly named Erotique.

Night on the Bare Mountain is one of those pieces which hi-fi shops use to impress customers, but it’s better with no hi-fi in the way – live. It’s an explosive start to tonight’s programme which includes dramatic scenes from Mussorgsky’s dark-hued opera Boris Godunov with star baritone Sergei Leiferkus, and concludes with Tchaikovsky’s first symphony, a work inspired by Russian life and folk music and of which the composer himself said was “better than any of my other more mature works”.

Earlier this season our string section had their time in the limelight (25 November) so this concert showcases the wonderful sound-world that the period-specific instruments of the OAE’s wind section provide. Tying into our season theme of Flying the Flag there’s a central-European Bohemian focus, including music from a close friend of Mozart’s, Josef Mysliveček, whose dynamic personality shines through in his music. The concert opens with Mozart’s masterpiece for 12 wind instruments (plus a rogue double bass), known especially for its heart-melting adagio.

This last concert in our Flying the Flag series straddles the Atlantic, and in doing so offers audiences the best of both worlds, old and new. There’s an energetic Slavic start, before Brahms’ lyrical Violin Concerto. At its premiere the composer, who was conducting, suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction – something which will hopefully be avoided this evening. The concert is rounded off with Dvořák’s Symphony, written in the USA, but expressing the composers longing for home. And of course made famous in the Hovis advert…

One of the iconic pieces of the classical canon, Bach’s St Matthew Passion retains its huge emotional impact even 300 years on from its premiere. Performed on period instruments to reveal the original colours and textures of the music, it is here sung by a top-drawer cast, led by the great Bach interpreter Mark Padmore.

CONCERT 10 THE ROUGH WITH THE SMOOTH—Tuesday 12 May 2015Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm

At the centre of this concert is a brand new piece by the acclaimed composer Stevie Wishart, whose track record encompasses both early music and cutting-edge electronics. Unusually, the piece puts the double bass centre stage, and is inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. Here our Principal Double Bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku plays between two ‘concertanto’ groups, the soave (smooth) and the ruvido (rough), with the rest of the Orchestra behind. Complementing this new work are pieces by Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi.

DAY SEATS A number of seats will go on sale at 12 noon on the day of a concert, giving you the opportunity to purchase tickets for a performance even if it has otherwise sold out. Royal Festival Hall concerts: 40 seats at £9; Queen Elizabeth Hall: 20 seats at £9. These seats are sold on a first come, first served basis and are available online, by phone or in person.

These are the very best seats in the hall, with excellent views and acoustics. Please note that series discounts do not apply.

PREMIUM BOX SEATSMake your night really special by booking Premium Box Seats. Priced at £60 or £70 and only available at Royal Festival Hall concerts, these seats offer you the exclusivity of a box, plus the ticket price includes an interval wine reception. Boxes seat 4 and seats are sold individually. Details of the reception will be left on your seat on the night.
