In the Caribbean region, Trinidad and Tobago has taken the lead in developing innovative pro-grammes aimed at enhancing the visitor expe-rience through the implementation of national quality standards.A major initiative in the drive to offer visitors a high quality experience is the Trinidad and Tobago Tourism Industry Certification pro-gramme, or TTTIC(pronounced tee-tick). The programme is designed to ensure that tourism operators and service providers conform to national standards of quality in all their operations. TTTIC was established to provide visitors withthe assurance of quality through a national pro-gramme of standardi-zation and certification.
These standards, which have been developed by the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) and pegged to interna-tional quality benchmarks and criteria, ensure that tour-ism operators and service providers maintain the highest standards of operation.
Developed in consultation with a wide cross sectionof stakeholders, TTTIC addresses issues such as the legal obligations of tourism operators and service providers, their responsibilities, ethics and systems of operations.
It is anticipated that national adoption of TTTICwill ultimately increase confidence in booking tourism
products in Trinidad and Tobago as visitors can be as-sured that certified tourism personnel meet all relevant legal requirements, are qualified, well trained and have effective health and safety systems in place.
The TTTIC programme is administered by the Tourism Development Company (TDC) Limited in Trinidad and the Division of Tourism and Transportation
of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) in Tobago.
The TTBS con-ducts independent third-party audits and provides certification to successful applicants. To achieve TTTIC cer-tification, the TDC and THA provide guidance on the requirements of standard and the certifi-cation process. Advisory site visits are conducted where necessary and applicants undergo an audit by the TTBS.
At present the following tourism operators and ser-vice providers can be certified: Accommodation Providers-Hotels, Guesthouses,
Bed and Breakfast and Self-Catering Facilities Tour Operators Tour Guides Tourist Land Transport Service Providers Short Term Motor Vehicle Rental Operators
When using any of the services outlined above look for the TTTIC mark of tourism quality assurance!

Maracas Bay Beach Facility on Trinidads North Coast has also become synonymous with a tasty treat. One of our favourite local dishes, bake and shark fillets fried to perfection and nestled between two slices of fried dough topped with a variety of vegetables and sauces can always be found at numerous booths located on the beach. In Tobago the traditional beach fare is curried crab and dumplings. The crab is simmered in a thick curry sauce flavoured with coconut milk and the boiled dumplings are flour based.

Trinidad and Tobagos Carnival has spawned similar celebrations around the world but few can rival the raw energy, euphoria and stunning spectacle of our festival. An enormous event that equally embraces people of every colour, creed, class and background, our Carnival also has distinctive components, including Panorama, a national competition where steelbands compete to
be adjudged the best and JOuvert where from 4 a.m. revelers dressed in old clothes, costumed as horned devils, covered in warm mud, paint or chocolate, dance through the streets until the sun comes up.
Carnival climaxes the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the traditional beginning of the Christian Lenten season. On these two days massive masquerade bands with thousands of revelers in shimmering, colorful costumes take to the streets to play mas.

THE PITCH LAKEA gift of nature and a national treasure, material from the Pitch Lake has paved roadways and runways the world over. Discovered by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1595, the lake has fascinated explorers, scientists and locals since. About 250 feet deep at its self-replenishing centre, The Mother of the Lake, it is 40 percent pitch, 30 percent water and 30 percent colloidal clay. There is also a museum exhibit at the site. For tours and information, call the Tourism Development Company Limited (868) 675-7034.
ARGYLE WATERFALLArgyle Waterfall, Tobagos highest, is located on the Roxborough Estate, a thriving sugar estate up to the 1870s when, sparked by the Belmanna Riot of 1873, sugar estates on the island crumbled. Following sugar, the estate was revived with cocoa and banana and the town of Roxborough bustled as vessels were loaded with a wide variety of produce at the depot for transportation to Trinidad. Guides are recommended and there is an admission fee.
FORT KING GEORGEBuilt in the early 1700s, Fort King George is one of Tobago's best-preserved historical sites. Its approaches take you past the current hospital facilities, the prison and onto the immaculately manicured grounds where
several cannon emplacements, the barracks and officers' mess and even sculptures and more recent artifacts await your discovery. The grounds offer majestic views of the coast and are a popular venue for art displays.
MAIN RIDGE FOREST RESERVEThe oldest in the Western Hemisphere, the Main Ridge Reserve was established in April 1776 as a means of preserving the watershed of the island. Local tour operators offer rainforest excursions into the reserve, primarily along the Gilpin Trace trail giving nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers the opportunity to walk into relatively undisturbed forest and feast on the flora and fauna there. Recommended as a group activity, tour operators should be contacted for excursion planning.
LITTLE TOBAGO OR BIRD OF PARADISE ISLANDAt one time home to transplanted Birds of Paradise, the 250-acre wildlife sanctuary formerly known as Bird of Paradise Island, now Little Tobago, is one of the most important seabird sanctuaries in the Caribbean. Home to, among others, the Red Billed Tropic Bird and the Brown Booby, tours can be arranged through area hotels, via concierge/front desk staff at the hotels/guesthouses and local tour operators.

BEACHESWhether you plan a long refreshing swim or if you prefer to lounge on the warm sand all day, Trinidad and Tobago has no end of beaches waiting to be explored.
On Trinidads North Coast, Maracas, Las Cuevas and Blanchisseuse are popular haunts, while the East Coast offers a variety of experiences, from surfer worthy curls at Toco to gently lapping breakers at Salybia and Manzanilla. Tobagos beaches are among the best in the Caribbean. The warm, pristine waters of Store Bay, Pigeon Point, Mount Irvine and Englishmans Bay are great for swimming and snorkeling.
For the adventurous at heart, the coastlines of both islands are dotted with secluded coves accessible only through thick forests or by boat.
MARACAS BAYMaracas is a 30 minute drive from Port of Spain to Trinidads premier beach. Lifeguards patrol daily from 10am to 6pm with warning flags guiding swimmers from danger. As part of the beach experience, enjoy the famous Bake and Shark, fried filets served in hot fried bread. Truly an indigenous culinary experience, the sandwich is served hot with your choice of sweet and savoury sauces made from fresh local fruits and vegetables. Changing rooms and shower facilities are available to visitors. There is also secure parking.
LAS CUEVAS BAYApproximately three and a half miles east of Maracas Bay is the popular Las Cuevas Bay. A snack bar, picnic tables, benches, changing rooms and shower facilities are available to visitors and lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. There is also secure parking.
MANZANILLA BEACHManzanilla is famed for the miles of coconut trees and the constant breeze that blows in from the Atlantic. Facilities for visitors include changing rooms, food concessions, washrooms, showers and are located on the northern end of the beach. Care should be exercised when swimming at Manzanilla as there are currents and rip tides. Lifeguards are on duty in the area of the beach facility.
VESSIGNY BEACHA popular venue for excursions and beach parties, Vessigny Beach boasts of fine beige sand and calm waters. Located just south of the village of La Brea, the Vessigny Beach Facility includes a spacious car park, changing facilities and food concessions.

PIGEON POINTIn your minds eye, when you picture a Caribbean beach, its Pigeon Point that you see, its powder white sands and iconic thatched roof jetty is the internationally recognized symbol for Tobago, thus making it Tobago's most famous beach and a source of longing for any visitor who has reluctantly left its shore trailing sand and taking memories.
STORE BAYJust over 200m long, Store Bay is one of the most popular on the island, ideal for swimming and one of the major departure points for tours to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool. Several restaurants dot the surrounding area offering excellent food, none more highly recommended than the curry crab and dumplings served by the vendors in the food huts at the beach facility - a highlight of any visit.
BUCCOO REEF/NYLON POOL/NO MAN'S LANDA marine park, Buccoo is the largest coral reef in Tobago. Along with the beauty of the reef and its marine life, a major feature of the excursion is Nylon Pool, where legend has it that a swim will make you look five years younger. A barbeque and beach party on No Man's Land, a sandy spit jutting into the lagoon, is also an excellent option. Seek recommendations or referrals for service providers and rates.
