Communion Services July 19th-23rd While the friars will be away at Extraordinary Chapter, July 19th-23rd, we will have daily Communion

Services in the church at 8:15am. There will not be Masses held this week. The Friars will celebrate a daily

Mass for the intentions while on retreat.

Mistaken Identity—Saint Mary Magdalene’s Story

Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron

of the slandered, since there has been a persistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the

feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Magdalene, that is, “of

Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication at the worst, of extreme demonic

possession or possibly, severe illness.

Writing in the New Catholic Commentary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven demons” “does not mean that Mary

had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke

7:36.” In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Edward Mally, S.J., agrees that she “is not...the same as the sinner of Luke

7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.”

Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those

who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first

awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the “Apostle to the Apostles.”

Please Pray For The Franciscans As We Meet For Extraordinary Chapter St. Bonaventure’s Prayer For The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Peace & Love,

Fr. Tom

Gospel for The Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time (July 25th) John 6:1-15

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

to glorify you in all things, almighty Father, whose mercy is not less than your power,

through Christ our Lord.

He appeared in the garden and revealed himself to Mary Magdalene,

who had loved him in life,

witnessed him dying on the Cross, sought him as he lay in the tomb,

and was the first to adore him, newly risen from the dead.

He honored her with the office of being an apostle to

the Apostles, so that the good news of new life

might reach the ends of the earth.

O Lord Jesus, through You I humbly beg the merciful Father

to send the Holy Spirit of grace, that He may bestow upon us His sevenfold gifts.

May He send us the gift of WISDOM,

which will make us relish the Tree of Life that is none other than Yourself;

the gift of UNDERSTANDING,

which will enlighten us; the gift of COUNSEL,

which will guide us in the way of righteousness; and the gift of FORTITUDE,

which will give us the strength to vanquish

the enemies of our sanctification and salvation.

May He impart to us the gift of KNOWLEDGE, which will enable us to discern Your teaching

and distinguish good from evil; the gift of PIETY,

which will make us enjoy true peace;

and the gift of FEAR, which will make us shun all iniquity

and avoid all danger of offending Your Majesty.

To the Father

and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit be given all glory and thanksgiving forever.

Amen.

MASS SCHEDULE In The Church

Saturdays at 5:00PM (Vigil)

Sundays at 7:30AM , 9:00AM, 11:00AM and

1:00PM (Spanish)

The schedule for our Livestream Masses is as

follows: 8:15AM on Fridays and Saturdays and at

9:00AM on Sundays.

EMAIL & TEXT SCAMS ARE BACK!

Recently, again, there have been fraudulent emails

circulating through our parish, seeking gift cards. Our

priests at OLG would never solicit funds through any

electronic means! These emails are fake and have

nothing to do with Our Lady of Grace Church. Please

report these to the police and to Jay in the Parish Of-

fice at 537-0806. God Bless and be safe.

ADORATION & CONFESSION In The Church

Join us on Thursdays at 6:00-7:00pm and

Saturdays at 8:45-10:00am

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION 2021-2022

Passing on your faith is one of

the most precious gifts you can give

your children. Registration for Grades 1st to 12th is

now available for Fall 2021 (1st Communion, Confir-

mation and Whole Family Catechesis) Classes begin

in September/October. The registration form is avail-

able in the Parish Office and on our website: http://

www.olgcv.org. Scroll down the homepage and click

on the Faith Formation box. Cost is $120 for the 1st

child and $60 for each additional child in the same

household.

All Children Are Welcome!

FESCO BACKPACK DRIVE

As you know, every summer FESCO,

(Family Emergency Shelter Coalition),

sponsors a backpack drive that our church

generously supports. This drive supplies the

children of the FESCO families with school supplies

they will need for the upcoming academic year. We

are hoping that you will consider participating in this

event.

If you would like to participate, we are asking you

to “adopt” a student. An organization has generously

agreed to donate backpacks, so you would just need to

provide the supplies for a backpack and put them in a

paper bag. For the student you “adopt,” we will give

you the list of supplies specific to your student’s grade

level. After all the supply bags are turned in, we will

transfer the supplies to the donated backpacks. We es-

timate that all of the needed supplies for a backpack

will cost $30 – $50 depending on the grade level and

where you shop.

If you would like to sign-up, please see Jay at the

Parish Office. You will need to return your bag of

supplies to the church or Parish Office on or before

Monday, July 26th. (Parish Office is closed on week-

ends.)

FESCO SHUFFLE—THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the parishioners and friends who

donated to FESCO this year. Team OLG raised $4,713

and the entire virtual event raised $70,205 to date. The

generosity of this community is amazing every year

and the families of FESCO are the beneficiaries.

FRANCISCANS WILL BE AWAY

Next week, July 19th—23rd, our Franciscan priests

will be away to gather for an Extraordinary Chapter to

discuss the future of our Mission in Vietnam. Please

pray for them. During that week, we will have Com-

munion Services at 8:15am in the Church. All Mass

Intentions will be fulfilled by the Friars at their gather-

ing.

PAX CHRISTI QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Let us not tire of preaching love; it is the force that

will overcome the world. Let us not tire of preaching

love. Though we see that waves of violence succeed in

drowning the fire of Christian love, love must win out;

it is the only thing that can.”

-St. Oscar Romero, 1980
