Also, inside the media center there are twenty computers. Located across from the media center is a Parent Center that is open for the public.

B. Topic Area Selected

This assignment focuses on 8th Grade Georgia History. All students in the 8th Grade at RMS are required to take Georgia History. In the class, students learn about the formation of Georgia, its history, its economics, and the politics of Georgia. The average age range of these 8th grade students are 13-14 years of age. Out of the 965 students at RMS, 338 are in the 8th grade. Out of the 338 students in 8th grade this year, there are 40 students with disabilities, and 3 ESOL students that are taking the course. 60 students are enrolled in the Gifted Program. According to the previous year’s CRCT scores, on an average, the students were reading on an 7th Grade level. Due to the inaccurate CRCT scores for 6th and 7th grades, social studies scores are unavailable.

III. Collection Evaluation

A. General description

To begin evaluating the material I needed for this assignment, I examined the RMS media center, its procedures and its collection. Since the school is fairly new, few print or non-print items have been weeded due to its appearance or condition. With its use of Dewey numbers, keyword labels, and hanging signs the locations of the sections are easily accessible. The media center is visually appealing to students and adults with its current posters, and multitudes of student works displayed throughout. For this assignment I primarily examined the Geography and History (900-20, 970, and 990) Dewey sections of the media center. The primary emphasis was placed on the 970s. On an average, the age of this section is 10 years old (1999). A total of 1,165 items are included in the section. It is 11.04% of Redan Middle’s media center entire collection. Compared to other sections, the Geography and History section contains the largest selection of items next to the General Fiction section. The Reference and General Fiction sections were analyzed also. Included in my collection are maps, atlases, and references pertaining to Georgia History. The RMS media center lacks reference materials that specifically relate to Georgia. The items in the Geography, Maps, and Atlases sections are 96% beyond age range. 52 items are in the section, and 50 of the items are beyond an acceptable age. However, only three items could be found in this section relating to the Georgia History curriculum. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and atlases were ordered to include in this weak section. Although teachers have access to PBS and unitedstreaming, a lot of times there are technological problems. Downloading and streaming may be stalled. At the beginning of the year there was no access to unitedstreaming at RMS. A glitz was found and we are connected again. For this reason videos were included. Also, including relevant up-to-date videos are recommended. RMS has a total of 428 videos housed in the building. The majority of the videos deal with Civil Rights and African American pioneers. There is a need for videos that cover the Georgia History standards. Also, there is a need for eBooks. RMS has no eBooks in its media center. The eBooks could benefit all students, especially the growing level one population of students.I found that my topic could be located in multiple areas.

Page 12: O. Ingram - Collection Development

B. Dewey and description

Material was included from the 300s (Social Sciences), 800s (Literature and Rhetoric, and the 600s (Technology). The RMS media center was lacking in Fiction material that is related to my topic. Fictional items were added, also.

990 General History of Other Areas 2000 15 items and only 3 in circulation.Reference 1995 939 items, lack an appropriate amount

for specific Georgia standards.

Weaknesses in the CollectionsAfter thoroughly examining Redan’s media center collection, I determined there were several weaknesses that I needed to address in building my collection:

Select current and up-to-date maps that specifically depict the state of Georgia Select current and up-to-date atlases that specifically represent the state of Georgia Select reference materials that specifically describe Georgia, it’s people, geography, and

history Adding up-to-date material for the Geography and History section that addresses the

Georgia History standards. Adding multicultural and multi-language print and non-print material that address the

Georgia History standards. Adding eBooks and videos that address the Georgia history standards and assist the

learning of the going special needs population at the school. Select material for a future growing non-African American population. Adding literary material that influences Georgia’s history.

Page 13: O. Ingram - Collection Development

To address the need of having a multicultural collection, I included print and non-print items of different cultures, and different beliefs. Also, included is material identifying with the physically handicapped. These items are lacking in the RMS media center. I have always had a difficult time assigning research and book reports that relate to the Georgia History standards. The work should appeal to the middle school student and meet the state’s standards. For this reason, I choose several works of fiction that had no reviews: Brothers of the Heart by Joan W. Blos, Parcel Of Patterns by Jill Paton Walsh, and Small Steps by Louis Sachar and several others. The three works of fiction respectfully dealt with the physically handicapped and Native Americans, Great Britain and rampant spread of the plague, and juvenile delinquents, rehabilitation and the physically handicapped. Sensitive areas that are discussed in class, integrated with the need to address and connect with students with disabilities. Multicultural items are highlighted below:

The world-wide web is used by everyone, but everyone does not always have access to the web. You can curl up with a book and you can carry it with you. At Redan Middle, the teachers and staff understand having insufficient technology. There is a lot of technology in the building, but a lot of the time it is not functioning properly. Books will function properly. The media center has to be maintained with appropriate material to meet the standards of every discipline. Also, it must have the appropriate materials to grab all students. I needed $3757.82 to update the Georgia History unit on Statehood at Redan Middle School. The media center is highly functioning and up-to-date however, it can always make improvement to meet the needs of the students. I purchased a database that would enhance not only the learning of the 8th grade student but all social studies students. Magazines were purchased to catch the student’s attention as they walk through the door. The magazine Stepping Stones will reach out to our multicultural students as well as their friends. Encyclopedias, maps, and atlases were added to assist students with locating Georgia’s counties and locating Georgia in relation to other states and countries.
