AFTER THE SUCCESS of the inaugural NewcastleMusic Festival in 2016, we are delighted to invite you

to join us in August 2017 for another feast of great music,in which brilliant local musicians share the stage withinspiring guests in world-class instrumental and vocalperformances, and some unique collaborations.

Guest artists include the stunning Hyeseoung Kwon, lyricsoprano with “exquisitely pure tone”, who has performedMadame Butterfly to great acclaim for Opera Australia,for Opera Queensland and for companies overseas;award-winning violinist Anna da Silva Chen, and British-based contralto Sylvia Clarke.

We also welcome the dazzling Orava Quartet, hailed byLimelight magazine as “fully deserving of a place atchamber music’s top table,” and featuring Newcastle-bornviolist Thomas Chawner. Cellist and another local,Anthony Albrecht, returns from London to perform at theFestival. Anthony was the first Australian to graduatefrom The Juilliard School’s Historical Performanceprogram. He performs two concertos and a solo Bachprogram, and joins with Orava Quartet to performSchubert’s gorgeous String Quintet.

The wonderful Deborah Humble (mezzo-soprano), whoseopening concert in the 2016 Festival received a standingovation, returns to perform a range of works, includingElgar’s Sea Pictures in collaboration with the OravaQuartet, pianist Claire Howard Race, and bass player GlenScribner, an event not to be missed. As a special newtreat, we are thrilled to present John Paul Young, one ofAustralia’s best-loved singers.

Newcastle Music Festival takes pride in creating a stagefor our finest local performers and this year includesperformances by Sally Walker (flute), Christopher Allan(baritone), Terence Koo (piano), Rosalind Halton(harpsichord), Dungeon Big Band with vocalist HeatherPrice, and the Newcastle Youth Orchestra. Singers fromthroughout NSW are invited to come together in theinaugural Festival Choir, directed by Kim Sutherland,joined by Hyeseoung Kwon and Newcastle YouthOrchestra for a performance of John Rutter’s sublimeRequiem. The Festival will end in grand style with theChrist Church Camerata joined by Anthony Albrecht andthe annually formed Festival Strings orchestra, with anopen invitation to string players from the community tojoin in this inspiring event in the beautiful Christ ChurchCathedral.

An exciting innovation of the 2017 Festival will be acollaboration with the University of Newcastle and artistBrett McMahon, whose installation, Baroque and Beyond,will be the setting for a number of festival events.
