Sail Team SeattleNY YC Invitational Cup 2013

Presented by Rolex

Seattle Yacht Club Finishes 2nd in the IC Qualifier!

SYC was invited by the New York Yacht Club to put a team on the water for the 2012 Qualifying Regatta for the Invitational Cup in Newport last September. The Invitational Cup has become the premier international sailing event in keelboats crewed by amateur sailors from yacht clubs around the world. It is sponsored by Rolex and run by the New York Yacht Club, which founded the Cup under NYYC Commodore David Elwell.

SYC Commodore Chuck Lowry, along with the Bridge and Board enthusiastically supported the team entry. The intense competition was held in J-70s and Sonars. SYC faced what would seem like insurmountable odds: only the top three out of 24 teams from outstanding yacht clubs around the U.S. would qualify to race the main event in September 2013. The team, which consisted of Andrew Loe (skipper), Michael Karas (tactician), Anthony Boscolo and Lindsay Bergan did extremely well, finishing in second place out of a fleet of 24 U.S. competitors in the elimination event, held September 7-8, 2012. This earned SYC an invitation to return in 2013 to compete for the Invitational Cup. Thank you Andy, Michael, Anthony

and Lindsay for your stellar performance and securing a berth for SYC to compete this September.

A major effort has been launched to send our team to Newport – to go back there and win! We invite you to join your fellow SYC members and to be part of this historic and important event in SYC’s long history of yacht racing.

Let’s Be First Across the Line!In order to win the Cup, we must launch the best team

with the best training. Our SYC team will be racing against some of the best yacht clubs in the world…the best from Europe…the best from Australia…the best from North America…the best from Asia. What an honor it would be to bring the Cup home to the Northwest. But your help is needed.

Financing Our TeamSailing big boats is expensive. The effort requires

11-person crews plus coaches, travel, lodging and other challenges 2,400 miles away. The all-in cost to fund Sail Team Seattle is budgeted at $150,000. The primary source of funding will be Top 150 Club member donations of $1,000 or more. Funds will be a combination of member donations and sponsor monies and will cover race entry fees, travel, lodging, the charter of Interlodge for the race, and for one or two other practice events.

All contributions will flow through the Northwest Amateur Sailing and Racing Association, which is the fiscal agent for the committee. Your contribution will be tax deductible. NASRA is an IRS approved 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Your donation will be a charitable gift and will be specifically designated to the Sail Team Seattle effort.

Sail Team Seattle Organizing CommitteeThe Committee in charge of organizing the effort, in addition

to the hard work of our manager, Steve Hall, and our Sailing Director Brian Ledbetter, includes Chris Otorowski, Chair; Jack Sullivan; Roger Pawley, Fund Raising Chair; Lon Davidson, SYC Fund Raising Communications Chair; Brian Watkins, Fleet Captain Sail; Steve Hazlerig, Fleet Captain Power; Kim Lorenz; Chuck Lowry; Dave Rice; Mary Anderson; Fred Woodard; Stan Nelson; John Chuta and Michele Shaw in addition to Commodore Rob Rothe, Vice Commodore Chris Warner and Rear Commodore Roger Anderson. The Committee welcomes anyone who is interested to sign up, support, participate and enjoy this enriching yachting experience, unique in the history of our Club.

Please contact: Chris Otorowski at [email protected] or (206) 369-6302 or

Roger Pawley at [email protected] or (425) 890-2751.

The NYYC Swan 42SYC has chartered the Swan 42, Interlodge, to compete in the Swan 42 Nationals in July as well as the main event in September. Part of the team will go back in June to scope out the 42s as they race in the NYYC Annual Regatta and potentially to sail on one of the other boats. At the time of the regatta in September, all boats will be identically tuned by race officials. Each boat will sail with identical mainsails, large jibs and spinnakers to ensure an absolutely even fleet. Crew weights are limited and all boats are identically constructed to class specifications.

Newport: A Sailor’s ParadiseThe Historic Baldwin Cottage in Newport

has been leased for the main event in September. This will provide sleeping accommodation for the team and will be a great home for the team.

Once the crew is set, we will produce a training plan which will include some on-the-water time in Newport. Once that is arranged, supporters will be invited to join the practice sessions on spectator boats. Many SYC members have expressed a desire to travel back to Newport to cheer on the team, take in historic Newport, visit Harbour Court and partake in the festivities. There are many accommodations available in

Newport, but they fill up fast. A fact sheet on accommodations can be obtained on the SYC website.

It is anticipated that there will be a full social schedule in Newport for all of those who attend, including VIP boats, on the water spectating, libations at Harbour Court, and social events with the crew and your fellow SYC members…and don’t forget about the Gilded Age and touring the mansions on Bellevue Avenue. This is an experience not to be missed!

If you want to take in the Newport International Boat Show, it happens September 12-15!

Top 150 ClubThe event committee is soliciting donations,

including 150 individual donations of $1,000 each. This effort is already underway and we have firm pledges and checks in excess of $40,000. All donations to the Top 150 Club will be made to Northwest Amateur Sailing and Racing Association (NASRA), which is a a 501(c)(3) IRS approved charitable organization and your gift will be tax deductible. NASRA is dedicated to the support of amateur sailboat racers in and from the Northwest. NASRA currently owns and manages a fleet of J22s that are available to amateur sailors in the greater Seattle area. NASRA is a cosponsor of the Sail Team Seattle effort and agrees to donate 95% of the funds raised to the Invitational Cup effort. This will leave NASRA with $5,000 to $6,000 to use to fund its local operations devoted to amateur sailing. Donations in any amount may be made via Club accounts, which will flow directly to a separate account dedicated exclusively to the Invitational Cup effort.

Top 150 Club donors will be recognized by:• Sail Team Seattle custom pin demonstrating your support of the Top 150 Club• Plaque at Mainstation with names of members and spouses• Personal plaque of appreciation• Recognition in the Binnacle

And best of all…the satisfaction of winning against many of the best yacht clubs in the world!

SponsorshipWhile the Top 150 Club will provide most of the funding, we also plan to retain professional advice in

seeking one or more significant commercial sponsors to raise additional funds for the team. In the event that the combined effort raises more than is needed to fund the Team Seattle Yacht Club effort, the excess funds would be used to enhance other SYC on-the-water activities.

In addition to placing the Seattle Yacht Club name on the perpetual trophy, we hope to create an ongoing sponsorship program that will allow us to raise substantial funds for SYC on a continuing basis. Other clubs, such as New York, Chicago and St. Francis, regularly raise substantial sponsorship monies each year for their events.

Club SupportSail Team Seattle and the effort to head back to Newport and return with the Invitational Cup is

enthusiastically supported by the Bridge, Flag Officers, Board and the Club. This is a unique opportunity to compete as a club, against some of the finest yacht clubs and amateur sailors in the world, in a highly visible and prestigious event that simply cannot be overstated. We hope you will join the effort and support our team, both financially and by coming back to Newport to cheer on the team and have fun with your fellow members.
