Waterways of New York
New York has many bodies of water, from large rivers to small lakes. They help New York with communication,
transportation, and transporting goods.
Hudson River
The Beginning, Middle, and End!
• All rivers have a source, or a beginning. • As the river makes it’s journey away from
the source it grows because it has smaller river and streams
called tributaries that flow into it. • Like all rivers the Hudson River has an
end, or a mouth, where the water empties into a large body of water like the Atlantic Ocean.

Along the Coast…
• A coast is the land next to an ocean.
Long Island and New York City are at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
• A bay is part of an ocean that cuts deeply into the shore.
• A harbor is a place where ships dock.
