The property lies between Kashaweogama Lake and Armit Lake, approximately 25 km NNW

of the town of Savant Lake. Access during the summer months is by boat from the launching

site on the Saugeen First Nation reserve, just off highway 599, at the east end of Kashaweogama

Lake. Boats can be taken through the narrows between Kashaweogama Lake and Fairchild

Lake, except in times of very low water. During the winter months, access is by snowmobile

from highway 516 at a point 16 km west of its junction with highway 599, via old logging roads

which lead to the narrows between Kashaweogama Lake and Fairchild Lake.

HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK

The first reported work on the property consisted of a program of diamond drilling on the

"Queenston" gold zone in 1958, by Queenston Gold Mines Ltd. Sixteen EXT holes were drilled,

totalling 1,967 feet. Drill logs were filed for assessment work, but no assays are available. It

appears that the gold-bearing quartz vein zone drilled by Queenston had been originally

discovered in the 1920's or 1930's, based on the apparent age of trenches as they were examined

in 1972 by Messrs. Thorsteinson and Cox (Nolan Cox, pers. comm.).

In 1965, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. carried out reconnaissance magnetic and vertical loop

E.M. surveys over the north-west part of the property, covering ultramafic rocks mapped by the

Ontario Department of Mines (Hudec, 1965).

In 1972, Nolan Cox and David Thorsteinson sampled the old trenches on the Queenston gold

zone. Channel sample results ranged up to a maximum of 6.34 ounces of gold per ton (across

20 inches).

In 1976, B.B.M. Investments Ltd. carried out tractor stripping over the Queenston gold zone,

and reportedly resampled the old trenches. Since their sample plan is identical to the Cox-

Thorsteinson map of four years earlier, no credence should be given to this alleged sampling.

In 1985, Dome Exploration (Canada) Ltd. carried out ground magnetic and horizontal loop E.M.

surveys over an extensive grid covering the Queenston gold zone. The following year, Dome

put down 8 diamond drill holes totalling 906.5 metres in the area of this grid. Only two of these

holes were drilled on the one good conductor outlined by the E.M. survey, one of which

returned the only significant assay of the program. Hole 232D-7 cut 2.05 g/t Au over l metre

in a sulphide-bearing iron formation. Three of the Dome holes appear to have been drilled in

the immediate area of the Queenston gold zone, although there is no evidence in the drill logs

that a known gold occurrence was the target of drilling.

In 1987 and 1988, Northern Dynasty Explorations Ltd. carried out an extensive reconnaissance-

level program over a claim group extending from the west boundary of the Dome property to

Armit Lake, as well as several other properties in the Kashaweogama Lake area. The highlight

of this work was the discovery of the "Willie Lake Zone" (also referred to in later work as the

DC Creek nickel occurrence). Surface samples were reported as containing up to 1.63% Ni.

Soil samples were also reported as having extremely anomalous nickel (up to 53709 ppm), cobalt

(up to 2607 ppm), gold (up to 4175 ppb) and silver (up to 3747 ppm). In view of the soil

geochemical results obtained during the present program, these extreme values should be

regarded as suspect.

In 1992, G. Gorzynski and H.E. Ewen carried out a joint OPAP program, revisiting and re-

evaluating numerous mineral occurrences in the Savant Lake region. During the course of this

work, they inspected the Queenston gold zone, where they took four rock samples. One of these

contained 9650 ppb Au (0.28 oz/ton).

They also carried out limited magnetic and VLF surveys as well as a soil geochemical survey

over the DC Creek nickel occurrence. In addition, they took chip samples across the nickel

occurrence, which gave an average of 0.65 Jo N i over 6.5 metres.

In addition to private sector exploration, the Ontario Geological Survey has carried out a

helicopter-borne airborne magnetic and EM survey of the Savant Lake area (OGS, 1990).

GEOLOGY

The geology of the Savant Lake area has been described by Trowell (1986, 1988). The property

occupies a small WNW-trending arm of the Savant Lake greenstone belt. It is underlain by

rocks of the Jutten Group, comprising mafic volcanics, ultramafic volcanics, and chemical

sediments. This last rock type includes chert-magnetite iron formation, silica-grunerite iron

formation, and cherty units without iron but often containing fuchsite. The ultramafic volcanics

are probably the same units mapped as dunite by Hudec (1965).

The volcanics and associated rocks of the Jutten Group form a 2-3 km wide belt trending WNW

from the west end of Kashaweogama Lake to the south end of Armit Lake. The belt is bounded

by granitic rocks of the Dickson Lake Stock to the north-east and the Fairchild Lake Intrusion

to the south-west.

1997 EXPLORATION PROGRAM

A brief program was carried out in October 1997 with the purposes of (a) re-locating,

resampling and examing the Queenston gold zone to assess its economic potential, and (b)

verifying the existence of the DC Creek nickel occurrence and gaining some basic geophysical

and geochemical data on the occurrence and the surrounding area.

QUEENSTON GOLD ZONE

The Queenston gold zone was located and examined in as much detail as possible in the time

available and in the prevailing weather conditions. The old trenches were partly filled in with

soil and vegetation, much of which seems to have resulted from the BBM Investments tractor-

assisted stripping program. This work moved a good deal of overburden around but resulted

in very little new exposure, and in fact seems to have partially covered or filled some of the

older trenching.

The host rocks of the Queenston gold zone are massive, medium-grained mafic metavolcanics.

In places near the veins they are foliated, sometimes sufficiently intense to be described as

shearing. Minor amounts of disseminated pyrite occur in the vicinity of the veins. About 20

metres to the south-west of the mineralized zone are a few outcrops of ultramafic rock.

The trenches are shown on the accompanying plans. They have been numbered from l to 15,

from WNW to ESE. Trenches l, 2, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are full of overburden and/or water.

The other trenches were mapped and sampled.

Trench 3 is a cross-trench 10 metres long. It exposes two patches of minor disseminated

sulphides and a 30 cm wide shear containing a narrow lens of quartz with chalcopyrite. A chip

sample across the shear assayed 0.79 g/t Au. Grab samples of the two sulphide lenses gave

assays of ^.03 and 0.24 g/t Au respectively.

Trench 4 exposes a 15 cm wide shear containing a 7 cm wide quartz vein, both lightly

mineralized with pyrite. A chip sample across the shear and vein assayed 0.03 g/t Au and a

grab of mafic volcanic with minor disseminated pyrite contained 0.10 g/t Au.

Trench 5 is a 10 metre long trench following a 50-70 cm wide shear mineralized with

disseminated pyrite and hosting quartz veins and stringers up to 30 cm wide. Both the shear and

the contained vein bend sharply to the north at the west end of the trench. Sample 97QTR5-1

is a grab of a 10-15 cm vein with pyrite, chalcopyrite and visible gold. It gave erratic results

on conventional assays, and a pulps-and metallics assay gave 11.70 g/t Au. Sample 97QTR5-2

was taken from the 70 cm wide shear zone at the same point, and assayed 1.28 g/t Au. Sample

97QTR5-3 was taken from a 30 cm wide quartz vein. A pulps-and metallics assay gave 18.86

g/t Au. Sample 97QTR5-4, from the shear at the same point, contained ^.03 g/t Au.

Trench 7 exposes a 50-60 cm shear with disseminated pyrite, hosting a 25-30 cm quartz vein

with pyrite and chalcopyrite. A chip sample across the shear and vein assayed 0.03 g/t Au.

Trench 8 was opened on a 20 cm quartz vein with no visible sulphides. Sample 97QTR8-1,

from the vein, assayed 1.48 g/t Au, and sample 97QTR8-2, from a patch of disseminated

sulphides in the volcanic, assayed 0.07 g/t Au.

Trench 9 is 23 metres long, with the eastern 15 metres following a shear zone whose central

portion is mineralized with disseminated sulphides and contains a single 30-40 cm quartz vein.

Both the vein and shear seem to terminate abruptly against a massive volcanic unit at the west

end of the trench. Three samples were taken of the vein material: 97QTR9-1 and 97QTR9-2

contained 1.62 and -c 0.03 g/t Au, and 97QTR9-3, which gave erratic assays, was re-assayed

using the pulps-and-metallics method, returning 15.81 g/t Au.

Trench 14 exposes a l metre wide zone of disseminated sulphides containing a 5-15 cm quartz

vein. A chip sample across the full l metre assayed 0.07 g/t Au.

Trench 15 exposes a 30-35 cm shear zone with heavy disseminated sulphides. A grab sample

assayed 0.10 g/t Au.

DC CREEK NICKEL OCCURRENCE

The DC Creek nickel occurrence was examined and sampled. In addition, the old grid lines

over the area were re-cut and re-chained, and additional lines were cut at 50 metre intervals, to

give a survey grid 300 metres by 300 metres. This grid was surveyed with magnetometer and

VLF, and a soil geochemical survey was also carried out.

Sampling of the Nickel Occurrence

The DC Creek nickel occurrence occurs in an outcrop of massive ultramafic rocks ("dunite")

on the east side of DC Creek. The rocks are green, soft and apparently composed mainly of talc

and serpentinous minerals. Minor amounts (l-2%) of disseminated pyrrhotite occur throughout

the outcrop. The main body of mineralization is 1.5 metres wide and is exposed for 5 metres

in a WNW-ESE direction. It consists of heavy sulphides along a series of fracture planes

running along or slightly oblique to the mineralized zone. The sulphides consist of a white

mineral that resembles pentlandite, and pyrrhotite. Thre chip samples were taken across the

zone: 97NSH-1 assayed 1.51ft Ni and 0.45 g/t Au over 1.5 metres; 97NSH-2 assayed 1.32ft

Ni and ^.03 g/t Au over 4.5 metres; and 97NSH-3 assayed 1.86ft Ni and -C 0.03 g/t Au over

1.3 metres.

Two samples of fuchsite-bearing chert were taken, more or less on strike with and to the east

of the nickel occurrence. Both 97NSH-4 (2500W/075S) and 97NSH-5 (2475W/080S) assayed

Q.04% Ni and < Q.03 g/t Au.

Soil Geochemical Survey

Samples of "B" horizon soil were collected wherever possible, and analyzed for nickel, gold and

silver. All the gold contents were low, the majority being < 5 ppb, with the highest value being

10 ppb. Similarly, most of the silver contents were ^.2 ppm, with a maximum of 0.4 ppm.

There are no anomalous values for either of these elements, and this tends to suggest that the

very high gold and silver soil contents reported by Northern Dynasty Explorations Ltd. in 1988

may have been the result of analytical error, sample misidentification, or possibly contamination.

The nickel values show a wide range, from a low of 5 ppm to a high of 2000 ppm. Background is considered to be ^0 ppm, and anomalous values are considered to be > 100 ppm. There is a strongly anomalous sample (1400 ppm Ni) about 10 metres east of the main showing, on strike with it and up-slope from it. Together with some threshold anomalous valus along strike to both the east and west, this suggests the possibility of a strike extension of the mineralization.

There are a cluster of highly anomalous samples, with a maximum of 2000 ppm Ni, in the north-west corner of the grid. When compared with the magnetic survey (see below), they appear to be clustered around the edges of the magnetic anomaly extending from 2550W/12.5N to 2650W/37.5N, which has not yet been explained. This group of nickel anomalies is open to the west and tails off to the east, where it appears to join with the anomaly running east from the main showing.

Magnetic and VLF-EM Surveys

The surveys were carried out by Dusan Dmitrovic using an EDA Omni Plus magnetometer-VLF system. This instrument combines a proton magnetometer and vertical gradiometer, with the capability to store a day's readings in digital form. A base station magnetometer was also used. When coupled for dumping into a computer, the two instruments automatically perform diurnal corrections. The VLF receiver uses three coaxial coils and a tilt-meter to synthesize readings of total field strength, in-phase dip in percent gradient, and quadrature in percent of primary field. Readings were taken at 12.5 metre intervals.

Data processing and map construction were carried out by the writer using the Geosoft system. Seven maps are presented at a scale of l :2500: total field magnetic postings, total field magnetic contours, vertical magnetic gradient postings, vertical magnetic gradient contours, VLF in-phase and quadrature postings, VLF in-phase and quadrature profiles, and VLF Fraser filtered in- phase. The VLF profile map has interpreted conductor axes sketched on it. Each conductor is labelled, from A to E.

The magnetic survey shows that the DC Creek nickel occurrence does not have an associated magnetic anomaly. It appears as a magnetic low, but this may simply reflect its position

between two more magnetic units. There are a number of scattered magnetic anomalies, ranging in amplitude from 1000 to 18000 nT. These probably reflect the presence of magnetite, and based on the records of previous work in the area, magnetite is most likely to occur in chert- magnetite iron formations. The widespread amphibolite-facies metamorphism has meant that much of the magnetite has reacted with the associated silica to form grunerite; therefore the magnetic anomalies reflecting iron formations are often discontinuous and erratic.

The VLF survey has outlined five conductors. Conductor A has low to moderate in-phase amplitude and strongly sympathetic quadrature indicating very poor conductivity. It is probably caused by a shear zone or possibly a schistose sedimentary unit. It follows the north side of the very strong magnetic anomaly running from line 2550W to 2650W.

Conductor B occurs only on line 2650W. It has moderate in-phase amplitude and weakly sympathetic quadrature suggestive of poor conductivity. It is probably caused by a shear zone.

Conductor C runs across the whole grid, at an angle to the regional strike. It has low to moderate in-phase amplitude and neutral conductivity suggesting moderate conductivity. It is provisionally interpreted as a cross-cutting shear with sulphide mineralization.

Conductor D appears to parallel conductor C. It has lower in-phase amplitude but similarly neutral quadrature. This suggests a similar type of conductive body but greater depth of overburden cover. It passes only 10 or 15 metres south of the main DC Creek nickel occurrence, and is therefore an important exploration target.

Conductor E runs parallel to the regional strike. Its very low in-phase amplitude and strongly sympathetic quadrature suggest a very poorly conductive source. Since it runs along the north side of the magnetic anomaly from line 2500W to line 2350W, it is provisionally interpreted as reflecting a schistose sedimentary unit.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONSThe presence of gold mineralization in the Queenston gold zone has been confirmed, although the very high grades reported by previous operators have not been reproduced. However, the trenches are partly filled with debris and the vein is hard to sample thoroughly. A positive feature is the presence of low gold values in sheared and mineralized volcanics hosting the gold- bearing quartz veins.

The Queenston gold zone should be thoroughly stripped and washed to expose it fully. Stripping should also be carried out along strike and across the strike to explore for possible extensions and parallel zones.

The presence of nickel at the DC Creek nickel occurrence has been confirmed. A soil geochemical survey has outlined possible strike extensions of the zone, and has also defined a strong nickel anomaly to the north-west of the main showing, which is as yet unexplained. Two VLF conductors (C and D) in the vicinity of the nickel mineralization are likely to be caused by sulphide mineralization.

A program of prospecting and stripping should be carried out on the DC Creek nickel occurrence and on the geophysical and geochemical anomalies around it. In addition, the grid should be extended both east and west to cover the bulk of the property. The expanded grid should be mapped, prospected, and surveyed with magnetometer and VLF, and soil geochemistry for both nickel and gold.

Respectfully submitted,

C. R. Bowdidge, M.A., Ph.D.
