NWA J36 - Monthly Machinery Sale

Saturday 2nd April

The monthly machinery sale at J36 saw a reduced entry with both lambing time and the horrendous weather playing a part in this. Small tools sold very well, with the dispersal on behalf of Bob Airey, Coniston starting the sale a Wood Laithe sold to £300 and a Pilar drill to £155.

In the large Machinery section, Cambridge Rollers sold to £1400, an Ifor Williams TA5 Sheep trailer with decks realised £1180 and a Vicon Fertiliser Spreader realised £750.

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs at Lancaster had an entry mainly consisting of hill bred hoggs with continental and Suffolk hoggs short of numbers to meet demand from buyers. A market average of 176ppk. Plenty of pens of continental and Suffolk hoggs selling between 180 and 195ppk. The trade was topped by heavy weight hoggs from RS & IM Kellet of Mill House at £95.50. Friday 1st April A good show of Cast Cows this morning with 118 forward, selling to a top of 174.5p/kg for a British Blue Cow from GR & A Foy, Parkside Farm. The top Overall price was £1130.94 for a Limousin from P Cummings, Holme Field.

Friesian Cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg from KE Robinson, Kiln Hall. Friesian Cows overall averaged 96.35p/kg. An overall average was of 103.47p/kg was achieved for all cows forward. Beef calves sold to £300 three times for British Blue bulls from DW Cottam of Hagg Farm and Limousin bull calves from Brian Wilson of Spout House. A selection of very young black and whites where eagerly bid for. A consignment of September born Limousin Heifer stirks from GJ & CA Penellum of Millom sold to £500. Even with the poor weather, once again a busy ring of buyers at J36. Aged Texel ewes with well grown smart twins sold to a top of £172 from Messrs Young of Lindale. Aged Mule ewes sold to a top of £165 from D & J & A Freeman of Troutbeck. More sheep required week on week to fulfil buyers requirements.

Tuesday 19th April - Show & Sale of Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs at Foot Judging at 10am

A very mixed entry of Prime Hoggs at J36 in keeping with the time of year. Better bred continental and Suffolk hoggs were in very short supply, many more could have been sold to the advantage of vendors and required at J36 to fulfil the requirements of a very busy ring of buyers. Better types of continental hoggs selling in excess of 200ppk topping at 220ppk for Texel hoggs from Peter Cummings of 5 Holme Field. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £107 from B J Bowness of Blea Tarn. Hill bred hoggs sold around 180ppk regularly.

A good entry of Spring Lambs forward once again at J36, with 30 being sold this week. Dependant on the quality of the lambs, trade varied from 210ppk to just shy of 300ppk. Butcher quality lambs sold 280ppk plus and topped at £119 for a trio of Charollais lambs weighing 41kg. More lambs required and could have been sold to the advantage of vendors. Best Texels in £95-£110 with an average of £81. Heavy Mules sold in advance of £85, topping at £98 from JB, L & I Ellis, New Hutton. Smaller fit ewes £78-£82 with plainer sorts a fraction less. Hill sheep sold to £103 for big strong Cheviots from Underley Estates, £71 for a pen of 4 Swales from FI & ME Little, Barrows Green. Roughs to £70 from TJ Winder, Gaisgill.
