Chapter 1:
Introduction to Diamond Microdermabrasion
The skin is the most visible part of the human body. When imperfections appear, the choices for recovery are natural healing or cosmetic correction. The skin’s natural healing process depends on the structure and condition of its three major layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer (see Figure 1). The epidermis is the top layer of the skin, and in itself contains several layers. The dermis lies just under the epidermis and is comprised of connective tissues, collagen, nerves, sensory receptors, hair follicles, and several types of glands. The subcutaneoous layer of the skin, also known as the oil gland, contains many blood vessels that are responsible for providing nourishment to the skin. Because of the depth of the skin, it can take as long as 14 days to eliminate the visual signs of a superficial blemish. Imperfections that are more severe than this can take even longer. The time it takes for the skin to renew itself depends on the depth of the imperfection as well as the condition of the upcoming skin cells.
Figure 1: Skin Layers
There are many cosmetic processes available to correct skin imperfections and enhance the quality of the skin. Microdermabrasion is considered one of the most effective systems to improve the skin with the fewest possible side effects and complications. The process of microdermabrasion involves using a mechanical device to remove the epidermis and stimulate the area to produce rejuvenating effects. The abrasion part of the process involves the use of aluminum-oxide crystals. The crystals are swept across the skin to remove the epidermis layer of the skin. The machine then sucks the crystals and dead skin cells back up through a vacuum. Microdermabrasion is effective, but the oxide crystals can cause problems. Diamond microdermabrasion is the latest generation of microdermabrasion. The exfoliation of the epidermis is performed with a diamond-tipped wand instead of crystals. With even, steady pressure, a diamond-tipped wand is swept across the treatment area. During the process, the skin must come in close contact with the diamond-tipped wand. Like microdermabrasion, there is a vacuum “action” that eliminates dead skin cells and promotes healthy skin renewal.
Benefits There are several key benefits associated with using diamond microdermabrasion, including the following:
No exposure to dangerous crystals or dust particles
Can treat delicate areas surrounding the nose, eyes, and mouth
Significant control of the treatment process, which promotes accuracy
No crystals to clog up machine
Subcutaneous layer
dermis layer
epidermis layer
Introduction to Diamond Microdermabrasion 5
NV-902 Diamond Dermabrasion System
When Not to Use Diamond microdermabrasion is effective for just about everyone. The following are the most common situations in which diamond microdermabrasion is not recommended:
Pregnancy
When certain skin conditions exist, such as dermatitis, psoriasis, or active eczema or rosacea
On individuals with undiagnosed skin lesions or unstable diabetes should contact their medical physician for advice
If you are presently using an acid skin peeler or other skin treatment, you should not use the diamond microdermabrasion procedure
On skin that is sensitive, swollen, or that contains a scar that is under a year old
Side Effects There are a few minor side effects associated with diamond microdermabrasion. Exfoliating the epidermis level of the skin may temporarily result in slight redness and/or soreness. Applying a small amount of moisturizer after treatment can help to soothe the skin. When treating acne, exfoliating the epidermis may result in some bacteria coming to the surface of the skin. The client may notice tiny spots, but these are temporary.
Usage Options Diamond microdermabrasion is effective for superficial skin conditions, as well as skin conditions that involve deeper damage. The following are a list of some of the usage options for diamond microdermabrasion.
General Skin Care A lot of factors can affect the quality of an individual’s skin. Genetics plays a big part. However, the environment, stress, nutrition, and cleansing regimen can also contribute to unhealthy skin. There are many products on the market that are designed to cleanse the skin. However, they are typically ineffectual at penetrating deep enough into the skin to make a difference in its quality. Often, the cleansing is just superficial. By resurfacing the epidermis, diamond microdermabrasion is an effective tool for combating these effects and can actually help to restore the skin to a healthy state.
Treat Skin Conditions The skin can become afflicted with numerous skin conditions. Diamond microdermabrasion is most effective for those conditions that affect the outermost layers of the skin, including the following:
Acne
Rosacea
Hyperpigmentation
Aging Skin
Photoaging
Acne There are many myths about acne and how it develops. It is actually a disorder that stems from the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the dermis layer of the skin. Acne is linked to three possible causes: follicular hyperkeratinization, bacteria, and the production of sebum. Either of these causes the production of androgen to increase. Under the epidermis layer of the skin, oil and dead skin become trapped, which causes inflammation. The inflammation eventually reaches the epidermis in various forms, including whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, and cysts.
Introduction to Diamond Microdermabrasion 6
NV-902 Diamond Dermabrasion System
By exfoliating the epidermis layer of the skin, diamond microdermabrasion is able provide room for the skin to breath to unclog the pores. The process also kills the bacteria under the epidermis. These are two of the biggest culprits in the formation of acne. The recommended treatments for acne is every 7-12 days; 8-10 treatments.
Rosacea
The cause of the redness and swelling of the skin that is characteristic of rosacea is unknown. The condition is typically considered chronic. Rosacea may strike anyone, but the typical sufferer is fair-skinned and between the ages of 30 and 50. Rosacea most often affects the face, but other parts of the body, especially the back, may be affected. The classic symptoms of rosacea include the following:
Flushing on the face and neck
Red lines in affected area
Bumps covering the nose
Face burning or itching
Dry skin
Pimples There are several forms of rosacea that are characterized by the symptoms. Diamond microdermabrasion is a viable solution as long as the rosacea is not active. The sooner a diagnosis is made and treatment started, the better the outlook.
Hyperpigmentation
Skin that consists of uneven dark spots is characterized as being plagued by hyperpigmentation. The causes of this condition vary and typically include sun damage, side effects from medication, and skin inflammation, and acne scarring. Diamond microdermabrasion is ideal for hyperpigmentation because the exfoliation of the epidermis will also remove any excess melanin, a general cause of the condition.
Aging Skin The normal process of aging can cause mild to sever visual signs on the skin. Over time, the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin lose their elasticity and become thinner. The skin also starts to produce collagen less often. These natural processes most often cause wrinkles, but can also result in the following skin conditions:
Age spots
Hyper-pigmentation
Spider veins
Enlarged pores Changes in the epidermis and dermis are typically based on genetics, but may also be caused by other factors, such as stress, the environment, smoking, and health issues. The effects of these can break down the skin’s natural renewal process. Diamond microdermabrasion is effective for treating aging skin. Mild to moderate signs of aging skin will require a less intense treatment than those that are more severe.
Photoaging
Photoaging refers to a disorder of the skin that results from exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sun rays, for example). The visual signs of the disorder are very similar to those of aging skin. Both conditions can cause wrinkles, coarse skin, and fine lines. The main difference in the two conditions is that a chronic inflammation of the skin is linked to the breakdown of collagen and elastin. In addition, photoaging can damage DNA and increase an individual‘s risk of developing cancerous skin cells.
Introduction to Diamond Microdermabrasion 7
NV-902 Diamond Dermabrasion System
In mild to moderate levels of photoaging, superficial diamond microdermabrasion can have effective results. Individuals with advanced or severe levels of photoaging will require treatments that penetrate more deeply into the skin. While diamond microdermabrasion is safe and effective for treating severe photaging, more attention is required to prevent scarring.

(Optional) Eye pads for patient
User’s Guide
System The machine must be prepared for each treatment.
1. Make sure the system is properly connected.
2. Cleanse and sterilize the accessories you plan to use during the treatment.
Client It is very important that the client’s skin is properly prepped for diamond microdermabrasion.
1. Evaluate the client’s skin to determine the function that is most suitable for the area being treated. If using the Diamond Dermabrasion function, determine the vacuum setting according to the depth of resurfacing you need to perform on the skin. If this is the client’s first treatment, lower settings are recommended to determine the skin’s level of tolerance for the treatment.
2. The area to be treated should be cleansed with water and a mild cleanser.
3. The procedure is most effective when the skin is free of any oil. Applying a solution that contains
alcohol will do the trick. For patients with excessively oily skin, a steamer is recommended
4. Dry the skin completely.
5. (Optional) Cover the patient’s eyes.
Treatment Instruction 16

Treatment This section explains the recommended way to treat the face and body using the system. Repeat the treatment process no more than twice. The neck area should receive a single pass. Refer to the accompanying images for assistance.
Treating the Face When treating the face, it is best to use short cross-hatching or circular motions, as shown in Figure 4. In a smooth and even motion, start at the forehead and work downward to the neck. The skin must come in close contact with the selected accessory (dermabrasion function) for maximum effectiveness. Use your finger to stretch the skin to gently pull it close to the accessory. Keep an eye on how the skin reacts to each motion. Note: Make two passes when treating the facial area. The following are recommendations for treating specific area of the face.
Forehead
Use cross-hatching when treating the forehead area. The ideal motion is upward strokes that move toward the crown of the head and cross strokes that move toward the edges of the face.
Eye Area
The same motion used for treating the forehead is
recommended for the eye area. However, use short cross motions that sweep toward the edges of the face
Nose
Use straight, even upward strokes when treating the bridge of the nose, and circle motions for the area just outside the nose.
Mouth Area
Use small cross-hatching motions when treating the mouth area.
Chin Follow the natural shape of the chin when using small cross-hatching motions in this area.
Treating the Body
Treating the body with diamond microdermabrasion is very similar to treating the face. The ideal is to follow the natural direction of the body’s natural muscular structure as you move from one area to the next. Unless treating a specific area of the body, long and straight strokes are best for treating large areas of the body.
Figure 2: Sample Face Treatment
Treatment Instruction 17

Torso
Starting from the back, use long and straight strokes when treating the torso. Refer to Figure 3 for a demonstration.
Figure 3: Torso Treatment
Chest
Use long and straight downward strokes to treat the chest area, as shown in Figure . Safety Warning: Never point any of the system accessories directly at the chest.
Figure 4: Chest Treatment
Back Treating the back is identical to treating the torso, except that you use long and straight strokes that start from the front of the body. Figure 5 shows the ideal movements.
Figure 5: Back Treatment
Buttocks
Depending on the client, the buttocks can consist of a significant amount of fatty tissue. Several circular or upward sweeping motions, shown in Figure , are recommended for treating this area of the body.
Treatment Instruction 18

Figure 6: Buttocks Area Treament
Arms and Hands
The recommended flow of movement for the arms hands is to work from just below the nail toward the shoulder, as shown in Figure . Use long and straight strokes when treating the arm area. Important Note: Do not treat the arm area if there is a significant amount of hair present.
Figure 7: Arms and Hand Treatment
Treatment Instruction 19
NV-902 Diamond Dermabrasion System
Legs
The legs can vary in muscular composition from one client to the next. Use cross-hatching for softer areas, such as the inner thigh and the back of the leg. Long and straight strokes are ideal for the sides and front of the legs. Circular motions are recommended for the back of the calf. Figure and Figure show the ideal flow of motion when treating the legs.
Figure 8: Leg Treatment
Figure 9: Back Leg Treatment
Treatment Instruction 20
NV-902 Diamond Dermabrasion System
Feet
You use the same motion to treat the feet that you would use to treat the hands. Using strokes that follow the natural structure of the feet, work from just below the toenail toward the ankles, as shown in Figure.
Figure10: Feet Treatment
Post-Treatment Each client is different and will require different post-treatment. The following are some general guidelines to follow after treating a client’s skin with diamond microdermabrasion:
After the skin is treated with diamond microdermabrasion, use the Cold Hammer to treat any temporary redness. A moisturizer or ointment can also help reduce the redness. The redness should disappear in a couple of days.
The removal of the epidermis can leave the skin more vulnerable to harsh sunrays. A sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 7 is recommended to protect the skin from hyperpigmentation.
The following should be avoided after the skin has been treated with diamond microdermabrasion:
o Acid skin peeling products o Sun exposure (for at least three days) o Other skin treatments such as hair removal o Medical preparations that exfoliate the skin, such as Retin-A (for at least a week after
treatment) o Heavy cosmetic foundation and/or pressed powder that is applied to the face
