Velkommen til Nuuk Welcome to Nuuk The capital of Greenland - is a facinating city filled with con-trasts, and packed with culture and experiences. Here we live in mutual respect with one another and nature, where modern Greenlandic society meets old traditions.

The nature that surrounds Nuuk, is characterized by the sun spreading life and nourishment during summer, and the green northern lights dancing across our Arctic sky, giving us renewed energy during the dark winter evenings.

A wealth of nature and unique Greenlandic culture awaits you in Nuuk.

Grønlands hovedstad - er en fascinerende by, fyldt med kontra-ster, og fyldt med kultur og oplevelser. Her lever vi i gensidig respekt med hinanden og naturen, hvor det moderne grøn-landske samfund møder de gamle traditioner.

I Nuuk finder man et veludviklet vejnet med busforbindelser til alle bydele - med 3 ordinære busforbindelser fra tidlig morgen til sen aften. Med flere udbydere i byen, er der også gode muligheder for at tage en taxa

Er man mere til brug af to hjul eller to ben, så findes der ligeledes gode cykel- og gå-stier. Selv snescootere har deres egne afmærkede vinterspor.

I Nuuks naturskønne bagland findes flere afmærkede vandre-ruter, for de som ønsker at undslippe byen i nogle timer.

Til søs er der både mulighed for at benytte en af byens mange bådchartre, samt kystskibet Arctic Umiaq Line. Sidstnævnte besejler Nuuk 2 gange om ugen, hvor det enten tager pas-sagerer med enten Nord- eller Sydgrønland. Sidst, men ikke mindst, findes der daglige afgange/ankomster via lufthavnen i Nuuk, som beflyves af hhv. Air Greenland og Air Iceland. Herfra er der flyforbindelser til/fra andre byer i Grønland, samt direkte forbindelse til/fra Island, og ligeledes er der faste flyv-ninger mellem Nuuk og Iqaluit, Canada, om sommeren.

Transport

På Grønlandsk betyder Nuuk ”næsset” og deraf navnet. Byen ligger yderst på en stor halvø ved mundingen af det vidstrakte fjordsystem ”Nuup Kangerlua”.

Samtidig er Nuuk den ældste etableret by i Grønland. Den blev grundlagt i 1728 af missionæren Hans Egede efter at han havde forladt sin første bosættelse ved ”Håbets Ø”. Hans Egede’s hus står stadig den dag i dag, på det selv samme sted hvor han i sin tid opførte det, i det idylliske område ved den gamle bydel i kolonihavnen. Huset bliver i dag benyttet af Grønland’s Selvstyre til repræsentative formål.

Lidt om Nuuk

In Nuuk you’ll find a well-connected road network with bus connections to all districts - with three regular bus services from early morning to late evening. With several companies in the city, there are also good opportunities to catch a taxi.

If you prefer to use two wheels or legs, there are3 good cycling and walking paths. There are even marked trails snowmobiles.

In Nuuk’s scenic backcountry there are several marked hiking trails for those who want to escape the city for a few hours.

At sea, there is the opportunity to use one of many boat- charters, as well as the coastal ship Arctic Umiaq Line. The lat-ter ports at Nuuk two times a week, and it takes passengers to either North or South Greenland. Finally, there are daily departures / arrivals through the airport in Nuuk, operated by Air Greenland and Air Iceland. From here there are flights to / from other cities in Greenland, as well as direct connections to / from Iceland. During the summer there are regular flights between Nuuk and Iqaluit, Canada.

Transportation

Nuuk means ”the headland” in Greenlandic and hence the name. The city lies at the edge of a large peninsula at the mouth of the vast fjord system ”Nuup Kangerlua”.

Nuuk is also the oldest established city in Greenland. It was founded in 1728 by the missionary Hans Egede after he left his first settlement at the ”Island of Hope”. Hans Egede’s house still stands to this day, at the very same spot where he built it, in the idyllic area near the old town in the colonial harbor. The house is now used by the Greenland Government to host special events and honored guests.

Greenland is nature, history and culture - all in one, in close collaboration. The 56,000 inhabitants that live on the biggest island in the world, are determined to build the begining of an independent nation in the years to come. During this tour to Nuuk - the capital of Greenland - you will get first hand insight into the building process of the nation – seen from a historic and contemporary view as well as the hopes and expectations, of the inhabitants, for the future.

There are several packages to choose from – Nuuk – Nuuk and Qooqqut – Nuuk and Ilulissat, Nuuk – Qooqqut and Ilulissat. Below is the ”basic package” that the other tours are built on. Visit our website www.tupilak.gl for a closer look.

This package starts with a departure from Reykjavik. Guests will be picked up upon arrival to Nuuk Airport and here-after followed with a check-in at the place of accommodation. The rest of the day will be free for guests to discover Nuuk on their own.

The following day is ”the historic day” where you will spend all day learning more about Greenlandic history. After lunch you will visit, by boat, the old abandoned settlement, Kangeq, and Hope Island. Return to the city will be in the late afternoon.

The next day is ”Greenland, now and the future” where you will be visiting the Parliament and City hall. After lunch there will be a guided bus tour of the city, followed by a ”kaffemik” hosted by a local family.

On the following day the departure to Reykjavik will be around mid-afternoon.

The journey starts with a flight from Reykjavik to Nuuk, where the guests will be landing in Nuuk in the late after-noon. The guests will be picked up from Nuuk airport and transported directly to the place of accommodation to check-in. The rest of the day is at your own disposal.

The first day in the program is ”the historic day” where you will spend all day learning more about Greenlandic history. After lunch you will visit the old abandoned settlement, Kangeq, and Hope Island. Return to the city in the late afternoon.

Next day is ”Greenland, now and the future” where you will be visiting the parliament and the city hall. after lunch there will be a guided bus tour of the city, followed by a ”kaffemik” hosted by a local family.

På grønlandsk betyder ”Kaffemik”, ”kaffe, tak”. Til en kaffemik bliver der tilbudt drikke som te og kaffe sammen med lækre godbidder i form af kager og andet sødt. I mange tilfælde er et sted defineret af de mennesker som bor der og hvil-ken bedre måde til at opleve Nuuk, end ved at dele mad og drikke med Nuum-miutterne!

Ikke alene vil du få et indblik i den hjemlige liv et grønlandsk hjem, men kaffemik er også en glimrende kulturel udvekslings lejlighed.

Du kan være interesseret i den lokale kultur, men dine værter vil være lige så nysgerrige efter dit!

“Kaffemik” means “coffee please” in Greenlandic. At a kaffemik beverages such as tea and coffee are served with tasty treats in the form of cakes and sweets. In many instances a place is defined by its people, so what better way to experience Nuuk than by sharing food and drink with the locals!

Not only will you get a glimpse into the domestic life of a Greenlandic home but the kaffemik is also an excellent cultural exchange opportunity.

The tour begins at the Greenland National Museum & Archives, the top museum in the country. You will learn about Greenland’s diverse and fascinating cultures and also get to see the Greenland mummies.

Following the museum you will visit the oldest part of Nuuk by the Old Harbour, where your guide will illuminate the contrasts between the past and present lives of the people of Nuuk. If you’re interested in politics you’re in luck, as your tour in-cludes a visit to the Parliament where you will get a first-hand look at where the decisions are made that affect how Greenland is run.

Ukkusissat, det imponerende fjeld med udsigt over Nuuk, er en lang tur. De, der erobrer den 760-meter høje fjeld, belønnes med en helt enestående udsigt over byen og det omkringliggende fjordsystem.

This trip is definitely for those who are in good physical condition, and who are ready for an adventure!

Ukkusissat, the imposing mountain that overlooks Nuuk, is a great hike. Those who conquer the 760-metre (approx. 2,500 feet) summit are rewarded by an absolutely unbeatable view of the city and the surrounding fjord system.

As Ukkusissat is a challenging peak, only the physically fit should attempt this hike. No particular climbing experience or equipment is needed just sensible footwear and clothing! The path to the top is marked and an experienced guide will be on hand.

This hike around the beautiful mountain of Quasussuaq lets you experience pristine, quiet wilderness without venturing too far from the Capital. It takes guests over rugged terrain, across a granite rock face that’s almost 4 billion years old. It passes brooks and streams cascading with fresh, clean, drinkable water, and takes in spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the fjord.

Good walking shoes or boots are a must, as is a light windbreaker jacket and mosquito repellent. A small light rucksack is recommended for your belongings – and remember to bring a water bottle so you can sample fresh, cold water from a mountain stream.

Denne vandretur tager en rundt om det smukke fjeld Quasussuaq og lader dig komme til at kende en uberørt, tavs vildmark uden at du behøver at vove dig for langt fra hovedstaden. Turen tager gæster over ujævnt terræn, på tværs af en granit klippevæg, der er næsten 4 milliarder år gammel. Vi starter med at bestige Ukkusissat der tårner op bag Nuuk-for-staden, Qinngorput, og fortsætter langs fjeldryggen mod nord-øst til kædens højeste punkt (800 meter). Undervejs nyder vi udsigten over Nuuk og øerne, mod Kangerluarsunnguaq fjorden, Kingittor-suaq toppen og gletsjerne, og slutter af med et storslået kig over Nuuk fjorden, og Storø og Sermitsiaq.

The ultimate sightseeing tour in Nuuk’s immediate backcountry.

We start climbing Ukkusissat which looms behind the suburb of Qinngorput, and continue along the mountain ridge to the north-east towards the chain’s highest point (800 meters). Views of Nuuk, the Kangerluarsunnguaq fiord, Mt. Kingittorssuaq and glaciers, can be enjoyed along the way. The tour ends up with a spectacular view of the Nuuk fiord, and the mountains of Storø and Sermitsiaq.

Kun 30 minutters sejlads fra Nuuk ligger en af områdets bedste vandretursoplevelser og venter; Kingittorsuaq, hvis spektakulære top kan ses fra hele Nuuk by.

Vi sejler med åben jolle og bliver sat af ved den sydlige fod af fjeldet, hvorfra vi be-gynder opstigningen. Frokosten (som man selv skal sørge for) tager vi et godt stykke oppe af fjeldet med udsigt ned over gletsjeren, inden vi begiver os mod toppen i 1188 meters højde. Nedstigningen foregår på solsiden, på den nord-vestlige side, hvor vi bliver samlet op af jollen.

Turen er meget stejl og krævende, med 1.188 højdemeter over ganske få kilometer i stærkt uvejsomt terræn.

Only a 30 minute boat ride from Nuuk lies one of the area’s best hiking experiences; Kingittorsuaq, whose spectacular peak can be seen from all over Nuuk.

We will sail in an open boat and are dropped off at the southern foot of the mountain, from where we begin the ascent. After having gone a good bit up the mountain, and before reaching the top of 1,188 meters, we will sit down and eat lunch (you will have to bring your own lunch pack) while enjoying spectacular views of the glacier.

The descent takes place on the sunny side, on the north-west side, where we are picked up by the boat. The ride is very steep and demanding, with a 1,188 vertical meter descent in highly rugged terrain.

A 2 hours hiking trip to one of the prehistoric food stocks at some rock boulders, which our ancestors, through generations and untill the 1960s, have used for storage of their dried food.

Such food stocks have always been placed close to the settlements in thouroughly dry, unapproachable places for birds, foxes and other wild animals.

Today the food stocks hav e been replaced by refrigerators and freezers. Join in, in this exiciting and informative excursion about former well organised techniques.

”Trails and Tales of Nuuk” is a historical guided tour in a theatrical setting. The audience is drawn into a dramatic portrayal of everyday life in Greenland and Nuuk where we hear the tales of the Dorset people, the challenges of the colonial period and the thoughts from the modern and traditional Nuuk.

3 young actors makes history come alive as we walk some of the oldest trails in Nuuk in the colonial harbour’s authentic scenography.

På denne tur, bliver du sat på land ved udgangspunktet for turen (dette vil være på en fredag ). Fra dette punkt skal du følge en afmærket sti i ca 3 km til den første lejr. Efter en god nats søvn under den store himmel oplyst af stjerner, vil du fortsætte turen til den anden lejr. Denne dag kan du forvente at gå 10 km, som vil tage dig ca 5 til 8 timer. På den sidste dag af turen (søndag) vil du gå til opsamlings-stedet, hvor du vil blive samlet op af en båd. Denne del af turen vil være ca 7 km lang og vil tage dig mellem 4 og 6 timer at gennemføre.

Ruten kan variere i hele sæsonen, afhængig af faktorer såsom den smeltende sne og så videre.

Ved lejren vil du finde telte, soveposer, køkkengrej og lignende - alt campingudstyr du har brug for, bortset fra fødevarer, som du skal tage med dig af sikkerhedsmæssige årsager. Af sikkerhedsmæssige årsager udstyres du med en satellitsender, så din vandretur kan spores. Systemet indeholder også redningstjenesterne og sender dine koordinater i tilfælde af en nødsituation.

To-dags selv-guidet vandretur

In this hike you are dropped off by boat at the starting point of the hike (this will be on a Friday). From this point you have to follow a marked path for about 3 km to the first camp. After a good night’s rest under the great sky lit up by stars, you will continue the hike to the second camp. This day you can expect to walk 10 km, which will take you approximately 5 to 8 hours. On the last day of the hike (Sunday) you will walk to the pick-up point where you will be picked up by boat. This part of the hike will be approximately 7 km and will take you between 4 and 6 hours to complete.

The route might vary throughout the season, depending on factors such as the melting snow and so forth. At the camp you will find tents, sleeping bags, cooking gear and the like - all the camping equipment you need, except for food which you have to carry with you for safety reasons. For safety reasons you will be provided with a satellite transmitter, so your location can be tracked. The system also incorporates emergency services and sends your coordinates in case of emergency.

Ønsker du at opleve en af de mest iøjefaldende smukke fjorde i Grønland? Dette er turen at gøre det på. Eksponeret for den ærefrygt-indgydende natur der er omkring dig, begynder turen med en åben båd, hvor man rejse ind til bunden af den fantastiske fjord Nuup Kangerlua. Under turen vil du passere fjelde, som er mere end 1.660 meter høje. De fleste af disse majestætiske bjerge er 2-3 milliarder år gamle. Det er også i disse fjelde at, geologer har fundet de første spor af liv på Jorden.

Efter cirka 2 timer vil du være nået et område i nærheden af bygden, Kapisillit, en bygde der hovedsagligt beskæftiger sig med fangst og fiskeri. Herfra vil man så gå i land og fortsætte på en vandretur i et smuk fladt terræn. Efter vandreturen til isfjorden er det på tide at vende tilbage til båden og drage videre til Kapisillit hvor vi vil tilbringe en time, i god selskab og med kaffemik. Dette giver dig en unik chance for at møde de lokale og det vil give dig er en forståelse af, hvordan livet er for dem som lever og arbejder hånd i hånd med naturen. Efter stoppet i Kapisillit, vil båden bringe dig tilbage til Nuuk. Hjemrejsen tager omkring 2,5 timer.

Ice fiord with hike and kaffemik in KapisillitDo you want to experience one of the most strikingly beautiful fiords in Greenland? This is the tour to do so. Exposed to the awe-inspiring nature around you, the tour begins with an open boat journey to the bottom of the stunning fiord Nuup Kangerlua. During the tour you will pass mountains which are more than 1,660 metres high. The majority of these majestic mountains are two to three billion years old, and some are as old as 3.8 billion years. It is within these rocks that geologists have discovered the oldest known evidence of life on Earth.

After approximately 2 hours you will reach an area near, a small fishing and hunting settlement, Kapisillit. Here you will come ashore and go out on a hike that is set in a beautiful and very flat terrain. After the hike to the ice fiord it is time to return to the boat and travel to the settlement Kapisillit, where we will spend an hour in good company and with kaffemik. This gives you a great chance to meet the locals and it will help you to understand how life is for those who live and work close to nature. After the stop in Kapisillit the boat will bring you back to Nuuk. The duration of the return journey is approximately 2 hours.

Helikopteren er lejet fra AirGreenland. I en AS350 helikopter kan der sidde 5 passagerer. Den kan lande på klipperne nær indlandsisen eller på de lokale bjerge omkring Nuuk for en picnic.

Partenavia P68 flyet er et ideelt og meget sikkert 2-motoret propelfly. Flyet tilbyder komfortable siddepladser til 5 passagerer, der alle har et stort vindue for optimal fotomulighed. Since 2010, AirZafari Greenland has offered sightseeing flights out of Nuuk by helicopter, and now the company offers tours by airplane.

Both options offer passengers a unique platform for taking photos and filming the Greenlandic nature and wildlife. It’s up in the air that one really realizes the enormous size and beauty of the Nuuk fiord complex. Various wildlife such as whales, seals and eagles are often spotted during the tours.

The helicopters are rented from AirGreenland. The AS350 helicopter can seat 5 passengers. It can land on the rocks near the icecap or on the local mountains around Nuuk for a picnic.

The Partenavia P68 airplane is an ideal and very safe two-engine high wing sightseeing aircraft. It offers comfortable seating for 5 passengers with a big window at each seat for optimum photo opportunity. Each passenger has electronic noise cancelling headsets for direct communication with the pilot. The headset also provides an option to listen to soft music along the flight.

At this moment the Partenavia airplane doesn’t land in the mountains. However it does cover a bigger area for the same amount of money.

The helicopter and the airplane both fly at an altitude of 150 meters or above, from where one can clearly witness the stunning nature around Nuuk.

Oplev en fantastisk sejltur dybt ind i Isfjorden. Vi sejler så vidt isforholdene tillader det. Se de fantastiske isflager, fugleliv og det turkisblå hav. Nyd din sandwich bestående af grønlandske specialiteter (røget hellefisk, laks, røget kød osv.) og drikkevarer (te, kaffe, juice), med en fantastisk udsigt over til Fuglefjeldet, hvor alke, måger og andre havfugle har deres reder. Hvis vi er heldige, kan vi observere havørne i luften over fjorden samt grupper af grønlandssæler, som kan blive opdaget blandt isflager.

Vi drager videre til at besøge den nedlagte bygd Qoornoq der ligger ideelt i fjorden. Vi går i land på det smukke sted, hvor du har en chance for at besøge den charmerende og nyrestaurerede Qoornoq kirke, inden vi sejler tilbage til Nuuk.

Enjoy a sandwich of Greenland specialties (smoked halibut, salmon, smoked meat etc.) and drinks (tea, coffee, juice) with a wonderful view over the Bird-mountain where razorbills, seagulls and other sea-birds nest. If we are lucky, we might observe white-tailed eagle in flight over the fjord, as well as groups of harp seals, which can be spotted among the ice floes.

We go further to visit the abandoned settlement of Qoornoq lying ideally in the fjord. We land in the beautiful settlement where you have a chance to visit the charming and newly restored Qoornoq church before we head back to Nuuk.

Båden sejler ud og om Nuuk og man vil kunne se byen fra søsiden. Herefter sejles der videre ind i fjorden, via ”Qoornoq” passagen. Her vil der være gode chancer for at se hvaler. Så sejler båden om øen ”Sermitsiaq”, forbi de næsten lodrette vægge på østsiden, og om på den anden side af øen hvor der er udsigt til toppen med gletcheren. Når båden er ankommet til vest-siden af Sermitsiaq standses der ved vandfaldet, som altid er et betagende syn. Så går det hjemad igen mod Nuuk stadig med chancen for en hval på hjemvejen.

The boat sails out from Nuuk and you will be able to see the town from the sea. Thereafter the trip goes further into the fiord, through the ”Qoornoq” passage. From here there will be good chances of seeing whales. The boat sails around the island ”Sermitsiaq”, past the nearly vertical walls on the east side and onto the other side of the island where there is view of the top and the glacier. When the boat have arrived at the west side of Sermitsiaq it stops at the waterfall which is always a breathtaking sight. Then it’s home again to Nuuk with more chances of whale sighting on the way back.

Ved udmundingen af ”Nuup Kangerlua” finder man den nedlagte bygd ”Kangeq”, som har været ubeboet siden 1960-erne. ”Kangeq” er fødestedet for den berømte grønlandske kunstner Aron (1822 - 1969), der malede historier fra de traditionelle myter og legender.

This tour starts from Nuuk city and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel by boat to Kangeq. Along the way you might be lucky to see wildlife such as birds, seals and whales. Have your camera at the ready, as you never know when one might swoop in from above or peer up from under the waves!

The abandoned settlement ”Kangeq” lies at the mouth of ”Nuup Kangerlua”. The settlement has been uninhabited since the 1960s. ”Kangeq” is the birthplace of the famous Greenlandic artist Aaron (1822 - 1969) who painted stories from traditional myths and legends.

Departing from Nuuk at 5 pm via open boat provides the perfect opportunity to take in the marvellous natural beauty around you. During the boat journey in the Nuuk Fiord you will have the chance to see some spectacular wildlife.

After an hour the boat will arrive at Qooqqut where you will have around 2 1/2 hours to enjoy delicious food in the Qooqqut Nuan restaurant. The chances are high that this restaurant is unlike anything you have experienced before. Situated in an isolated location, the restaurant is surrounded by an awe-inspiring natural landscape as far as the eye can see, with untamed expanses of land and majestic mountains that you’ll definitely want to photograph. Make sure you have a camera with you as this is a dining experience that is guaranteed to delight!

If you have a passion for fishing this tour is the perfect opportunity to merge your passion with your taste buds. The trip can be combined with an hour of fishing before arriving at the restaurant and your catch can then be brought to the restaurant where the chef will prepare it as the main course. However, before the fish is delivered to the chef you will need to chop it up in preparation for use. Fish&Dish er en heldags udflugt til Qooqqut med sjovt og spændende fiskeri, samt stor gastronomisk oplevelse.

Vi giver os god tid på vej til Qooqqut, så vi kan hilse på eventuelle hvaler, se nærmere på isfjelde, vandfald og særligt smukke steder undervejs.

I Qooqqut fjorden kaster vi snørerne ud for at fange rødfisk og torsk. Lige før middag ankommer vi Qooqqut Nuan, hvor vi sørger for at fiskene bliver renset og tilberedt.

De friskfangede fisk serveres med tilbehør i restauranten på Hotel Qooqqut Nuan, hvor der også er kaffe og kage indtil vi midt på eftermiddagen sejler derfra, for så at være tilbage i Nuuk sidst på eftermiddagen.

We make sure to take our time on the way to Qooqqut so we can greet any whales there might be along the way, and to take a closer look at the icebergs, waterfalls and beautiful places along the way.

In Qooqqut fjord we throw the fishing lines out to catch redfish and cod. Just before midday we arrive at Qooqqut Nuan where we clean the fish and get it prepared.

The fresh fish is served with accompaniments in the restaurant of Hotel Qooqqut Nuan, where there is also coffee and cake until the mid-afternoon when we sail away, to return to Nuuk in the late afternoon.

Gold & Fish is a day excursion where we sail into the fjord to an indescribably beautiful place near the ice fjord, which also has lots of beautiful icebergs.

After half an hour of sailing we arrive at ABC’s gold mine where half of the participants will come ashore and be equipped with a pickaxe, shovel and washing pan and of course guidance in the noble art of panning for gold - and mind you, it is genuine native gold. Obviously, we can not guarantee the discovery of gold, but there is really good chance to find gold.

The other half of the participants will stay on board the boat and continue to a fishing spot nearby. Here we will haul gold from the sea in the form of beautiful big redfish.

At midday we will have lunch and the teams swap so everyone gets the opportunity to try both gold panning and harvesting the (red) fruits of the sea.

Gold&Fish er en heldagsudflugt hvor vi sejler ind i fjorden til et ubeskriveligt smukt sted i nærheden af isfjorden, hvor også er masser af smukke isfjelde.

Efter halvanden times sejlads ankommer vi ABC’s åbne guldmine hvor halvdelen af deltagerne kommer i land udstyret med hakke, spade og vaskepande, samt naturligvis vejledning i den ædle kunst at vaske guld - vaskeægte naturligt forekommende guld, vel at mærke. Vi kan naturligvis ikke garantere fund af guld, men der er virkelig god sandsynlighed for at finde guld som man kan få med hjem.

Den anden halvdel af deltagerne bliver ombord og kommer med hen til fiskestedet lige i nærheden. Her vil vi hale havets guld ombord i form af store flotte rødfisk.

Midt på dagen holder vi frokost og holdene bytter, så alle får lejlighed til at prøve både at vaske guld og høste havets (røde) frugter.

With this tour you can enjoy both food and fishing, through a combination of fishing at open sea and a tasty barbeque. Your guide will bring you by open boat to a good fishing spot in the open sea, and after an hour or two of relaxing fishing surrounded by the beautiful waves, you will sail back to shore with your catch.

On land, the guide will prepare your catch in a traditional Greenlandic manner. You can feel proud that you caught your meal (and you know it’s going to taste really good because you caught it!) and in addition you can enjoy your meal in stunningly beautiful surroundings.

One of the best ways to take in the stunning scenery of Greenland is to view it at your leisure by boat and this is exactly what you will do on this tour. Unlike most of our other tours, this trip is not in the Nuuk Fiord but is south of Nuuk. Your adventure begins with an hour-long boat journey, during which you will travel through a truly breathtaking archipelago towards the abandoned settlement of Nuup Narsaa or Little Narsaq.

This small settlement south of the Nuuk Fiord is an abandoned settlement which lies deserted for most of the year. However, from June to October the settlement comes to life thanks to the exuberance of excited children who travel from Nuuk in order to take part in the settlement’s summer camp.

During the tour there is the opportunity to spot fantastic wildlife including birds, seals and whales. In addition to nature’s wildlife marvels, on the return journey from Little Narsaq one will pass Akilia Island which contains some of the world’s oldest rock, dating to over three billion years old.

En af de bedste måder at nyde den fantastiske natur i Grønland er at se på en sejltur. I modsætning til de fleste af vores ture, så går denne tur ikke ind i Nuuk Fjorden, men lige syd for Nuuk. Panorama byrundtur

A two hour tour of Greenland’s capital, past and present. Historic, picturesque neighbourhoods and modern buildings nestle side by side in this almost 300-year-old city, the largest in Greenland. An experienced guide will field questions and offer fascinating insights into Nuuk’s history, architecture and way of life.

Highlights include four photo stops with panoramic views of the fiord, visits to the main harbour, the marina, and the old and new campuses of the University of Greenland.

The tour also takes you past the shops in the centre of the city, concluding at the Old Colonial Harbour, site of the National Museum of Greenland.

The tour provides a good impression of the overall scale of Nuuk, some-thing not immediately apparent from a wander around the Old Harbour and the city centre.

Turen starter ved havnen, hvor turisten vil mødes med guiden. Herefter går man samlet op til nærmeste offentlige busstoppested. Undervejs får man historien om havnen og dens tilhørende industri.

Man kører herefter med den offentlige bus, sammen med de lokale, rundt i Nuuk og dens til-hørende forstæder og hører her om dens udvikling gennem tiden. Man stiger af i Nuussuaq, hvor man tager ned til svømmehallen Malik (betyder ”bølge”). Herfra tager man endnu en bus videre til den nyeste forstad, Qinngorput.

Efter en udstigning inde i bycentrum og en mindre byvandring, afsluttes turen i kulturhuset Katuaq’s café ”Café Tuaq”.

Get ready to set sail as your guide will take you via open boat to different places near Nuuk where Arctic Char are known to frequent. These places make for great fishing. You can fish for Arctic Char that weigh up to five to six kg, all within the most fantastic surroundings.

Typically people fish for Arctic char at the mouths of rivers or at the boundary between rivers and lakes. As a rule, char are found where the concentration of food is greatest, the water is deep enough to cover their dorsal fins, and where the water is relatively still. Depending on how far into the fishing season you are, you may have to walk quite a long way upriver to find the best fishing spots. You can get so close to the fish that you may be able to catch them with your bare hands after a short lesson.

Although we cannot guarantee the size and amount of your catch, nor how successful your trip will be, you can be sure that the experience will be one to treasure for the rest of your life.

Lige nord for Oriartorfik, der ligger syd for storøen, er der et sted med masser af rødfisk og torsk. Båden sejler fra Nuuk direkte ind til det gode fiskested. Herfra fiskes der efter rødfisk og torsk i et par timer og derefter sejles der hjem til Nuuk igen.

Der er næsten fangstgaranti, det eneste problem man kan støde på her er hvis der er for mange små torsk, så kan det være svært at komme ned til rødfiskene som holder til ved bunden. Hvis det sker er der andre muligheder i nærheden

Lige før man drejer ind ved Qooqqut er der et vandfald hvor man kan fange både torsk og rødfisk.

I 2011 blev der her fanget nogle af de største rødfisk på mellem 3 og 4 kg. Enkelte ture var der op til 4-6 store fisk ombord, men det sker ikke hver gang.

Just north of Oriartorfik, located south of Storøen, there is a place with plenty of redfish and cod. The boat sails from Nuuk directly to the good fishing spot. From there, we will fish for redfish and cod for a few hours and then sail home to Nuuk again.

The catch is almost guaranteed, the only problem one may encounter here is that it could get hard to reach the redfish that are dwelling at the seabed if there are too many of the small cods around. If that is the case, there are other opportuni-ties in the vicinity

Just before the turn in to the Qoqqut bay there is a waterfall where the fishing oppotunities for cod and redfish are really good.

In 2011, some of the biggest redfish, weighing between three and four kg, were caught here. During some trips there were up to four to six big fish on board, but it does not happen every time.

It may happen that there is strong wind which causes the boat to drift too fast. If it is the case the boat will sail into the Qoqqut bay and fish at the Redfish spot there

Siden den første bølge af indvandring via Thule omkring 4000 til 5000 år siden, har inuit-ter i Grønland været afhængige af naturens ressourcer i form af fisk, fugle, landpattedyr og havpattedyr. Jagt og fiskeri har derfor altid været et spørgsmål om overlevelse i et land, hvor sommeren er kort og klimaet uegnet til effektivt landbrug.

Denne tur er virkelig en autentisk tur, der giver stor indsigt i en grønlandsk fanger og fisker’s daglige liv (oftest, de er de begge dele). På denne tur vil du opleve den måde, hvorpå jægere jager på havet.

Når du går på fangst du skal huske, at dette er en del af dagligdagen i Grønland - ikke alt kødet i de grønlandske hjem kommer fra supermarkeder. Befolkningen i Grønland er tæt på naturen og ser sig selv som en naturlig del af fødekæden.

Since the first wave of immigration via Thule around 4000 to 5000 years ago, the Inuits in Greenland have been dependent on nature’s resources in the form of fish, birds, land mammals and marine mammals. Hunting and fishing have therefore always been a question of survival in a country in which the summer is short and the climate unsuitable for effective farming.

This tour provides authentic insight into the daily life of a Greenlandic hunter and fisherman (more often than not, they are both). In this tour you will experience the way in which hunters hunt at sea.

When going hunting you have to remember that this is a part of daily life in Greenland - not all the meat in Greenland homes comes from supermarkets. The people of Greenland are close to nature and view themselves as a natural part of the food chain.

At bo i ”Inuk Hostels” er i sig selv en stor kulturel oplevelse. Smukt beliggende med udsigt ud mod byens vartegn - øen med det smukke store fjeld - ”Sermitsiaq”, som betyder ’fjeldet med et stykke is’ (gletcher) samt ud mod det enorme fjordkompleks ”Nuup Kangerlua” med adskellige isbræer i bunden af fjorden.

Med den smukke udsigt foran sig, grilles der på sten og tilberede mad på traditionel vis over stenko-gestedet. Dette foregår lige udenfor ”Inuk Hostels”. Specielle grønlandske råvarer, såsom ammassaat (lodder), ørred, sælkød og/eller rensdyrkød, blive skåret i små bidder og tilberedt.

Her bliver fortalt om grønlandske råvarer og om planternes betydning i madlavningen fra ældre tid.

To stay at the ”Inuk Hostels” is in itself a great cultural experience. Beautifully situated with a view of two of the city’s landmarks: the island with the beautiful high mountain - ”Sermitsiaq” which means ’the mountain with a piece of ice’ (glacier) and the enormous fjord complex”Nuup Kangerlua”, home to numerous glaciers.

While watching the beautiful view, we will barbecue on stones and cook the food traditionally over a small bonfire with a large thin rock on top. This takes place just outside ”Inuk Hostels”. Special Greenlandic ingredients such as ammassaat (capelin), trout, seal meat and/or reindeer meat will be cut into small pieces and cooked.

One will learn about the importance of Greenlandic ingredients and plants in cooking. Knowledge passed down from the old days.

Whenever you visit a place as a tourist, the chances are that you’ll find no shortage of tourist-designated areas and activities. Now there’s no denying that these can offer an entertaining way to pass the time on your trip but often they only present a very specific viewpoint of the location you are in – namely, the part that is catering to outsiders. If you really want to discover what a place is like, the best way to do so is to experience it as a local would. If this is the kind of genuine connection and understanding you are seeking, the Atammik tour of-fers first-hand experience with three days of daily life in a small Greenlandic settlement.

During your stay you will discover a way of life that is probably vastly different from your own. The memories and experiences you will have by the end of the trip will be something to treasure when you are back home and will hopefully help you to relax and unwind even when you are miles away from the small settlement that provided those cherished memories.

The boat trip which lasts 2 1/2 hours will travel through a mix of narrow straits and open ocean. Along the way you might encounter whales frolicking in the water or eagles and foxes in search of food along the coastline. Have your camera close to hand because you never know what delightful creature might make an appearance.

Atammik is a typical Greenlandic settlement and one that only sees a few tourists each year. The 250 inhabitants make a living by hunting and fishing. They don’t get a lot of guests so be prepared to be the center of attention!

There is a small shop in which you can buy everything from a loaf of bread to a hunting rifle. However, this trip is about being disconnected from the world at large. Find a sunny spot out of the wind where you can read a good book and enjoy one of the last places on Earth where the minutes extend leisurely after one another without the frenzy of city living and there’s plenty of time to do nothing at all except relax. Let the cares and stresses of your work and life back home fade away and instead focus on the here and now, surrounded by the truly magnificent natural landscape. Alternatively take a stroll through Atammik with its cheerful, brightly colored houses and let the charming calm of the settlement wash over you. Converse with the locals and discover the joy of “you time” free from distractions and worries.

Bygden er et fangst og fiskeri samfund, der ligger dybt inde i den smukke Nuuk Fjord, ca 75 km fra Nuuk. Navnet Kapisillit betyder direkte oversat ”laks” og det hentyder til det faktum, at en elv nær bygden er Grønland eneste gydeplads for laks. Området er perfekt til fiskeri og vandre-ture. This tour is an experience of a lifetime where you will get to see life in a small settlement out-side of Nuuk. You will feel almost as if you are stepping back in time, as the settlement only has one shop where you can buy all sorts of things, ranging from baby diapers to cinnamon to guns! The pace of life in Kapisillit is slow, giving you a great chance to take a break from your daily life and to unwind and relax.

The transport to Kapisillit is a combination of closed boat and open boat. The boat tour takes about three hours depending on the weather.

In this tour you are on your own in the settlement for three to four days. However don’t worry about being stranded with nowhere to sleep! We can help you arrange accommodation in a B&B or a small house.

The village is a hunting and fishing community that dwells deep in the beautiful Nuuk Fjord, about 75 km from Nuuk. The name Kapisillit directly translated means “salmon” and it alludes to the fact that a river near the settlement is Greenland’s only spawning ground for salmon. The area is perfect for fishing and hiking. If you’re keen to hike, the most popular trek is undoubtedly the route that leads to the edge of the Kangersuneq fjord.

On this 2-hour bike ride one will learn facinating information on the history, past and present culture of Nuuk, while seeing beautiful architecture as the wind ruffles through your hair.

Your guided tour will take you past the city centre, shops, charming neighbourhoods and diverse architecture and will conclude at the Old Harbour where you will see the National Museum of Greenland. Along the route you will also see the Parliament and City Hall. Your guide is a friendly source of information and insights into the past and present within Nuuk, so ask questions if you have them! Also don’t forget to bring a camera as there will be many sights you’ll want to capture and there will be stops along the tour so don’t worry about balancing precariously and wobbling down the street as you attempt to take blurry images of the sights whizzing past!

Grønlændere, har som andre inuit frænder, altid elsket at fortælle og videregive historier fra deres forfædre. Flere historier fra oldtiden er identiske med de historier, som vores inuit frænder i Sibirien, Canada og Alaska også stadigvæk for-tæller deres efterkommere. Historierne har næsten altid haft en opdragende rolle.

Storytellings foregår i naturen - udenfor Inuk Hostels - og indendørs i caféen ved mindre godt vejr. Historierne fortælles af en dygtig storyteller og lytterne har derefter mulighed for at spørge til den historie, de netop har lyttet til.

Greenlanders, like other Inuit kinsmen, have always loved to pass on stories from their ancestors. Several stories from ancient times are identical to the stories that our Inuit kin in Siberia, Canada and Alaska still tell their descendants. The stories have nearly always had an educational purpose.

The storytelling takes place in nature - outside of Inuk Hostels - and indoors in the café when the weather is bad. The stories are told by a skilled storyteller and listeners will have the opportunity to interact and ask questions.

The Kangerluarsunnguaq Ski Center have 3 cabins, and each cabin have room for 5-6 adults. In each of these there are a heaters, beds and small kitchenettes with all ”normal” cooking equipment.

I det gamle koloniområde i Nuuk, lige overfor Grønlands National Museum, ligger skindsystuen, Kittat.

Medarbejderne i Kittat arbejder til daglig med at bevarer og opretholde den grønlandske kulturarv. Man arbejder derfor specielt med fremstilling og vedligeholdelsen af den traditionelle grønlandske nationaldragt.

Udover arbejdet med nationaldragten, så arbejder man også på andre traditionelle accessories såsom dametasker, punge o.a. Samt kan man leje de traditionelle dragter til kvinder og piger, og kamikker til mænd og drenge.

Kittat blev i 2013, i samarbejde med Économusées Northern Europe, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, Grønlands National Museum og Greenland Tourism & Business Council, omdannet til et Economuseum. Dvs. at det i dag fungere som et levende museum som er med til at bevare de gamle traditioner. Et sted hvor man kan komme ind og se syerskerne i gang med traditionelt grønlandsk skindarbejde.

In the old colonial area of Nuuk, just across the National Museum of Greenland, lies Kittat, the fur sewing workshop.

The work of the employees at Kittat are helping to preserve and maintain the Greenlandic cultural heritage. The work that are done here is mostly with the production and maintenance of the traditional national costume.

Besides the national costume, they also work on producing other traditional accessories such as hand bags, purses, etc. And one can rent the traditional costumes for women and girls, and kamiks for men and boys.

Kittat was in 2013, in close collaboration with Économusées Northern Europe, the Municipality of Sermersooq, Greenland National Museum and Greenland Tourism & Business Council, transformed into a Economuseum. Meraning that today the work-shop serves as a living museum which helps to preserve the old traditions. A place where you can come in and see the seam- stresses working with traditional Greenlandic skin work.

Der er spændende vandremuligheder i alle sværheds-grader lige i Nuuks umiddelbare bagland.

Kortet på næste side viser de fire officielle vandreruter i Nuuk’s bagland, hvoraf to har skilte ved starten af sporet. Hver rute er markeret med hver deres farve: grøn, gul, pink og orange.

Det er tilrådeligt, at når man er i den grønlandske natur at være forberedt hurtige vejrskift. Husk altid at følge de råd, der gives på kortet.

There are exciting hikes of all difficulty levels right in Nuuk’s backyard.

The map on the next page shows the four official hiking routes of the Nuuk back-country, two of which have signs marking the start of the trail. Each route is marked by a different colour: green, yellow, pink and orange.

It is advisable that when in the Greenlandic nature it is best to be prepared due to rapid weather changes. Always remember to follow the advice that is given on the map.

THE HIKING ROUTES - DEGREES OF DIFFICULTYRoute A: Class 1 = easy hiking, mostly on good tracks. Route B: Class 2 = hiking includes walking off tracks over uneven terrain. Route C & D: Class 3 = hiking with easy climbing over uneven terrain.

GOOD ADVICE - these instructions apply equally to beginners and experienced hikers- Note that the different routes have different degrees of difficulty.- Be alert to signs of fatigue in your fellow hikers.- Start together - hike together - return together.- Check the weather forecast - a fog can develop very quickly.- Carry extra clothing (and some food) just in case the weather should

change for the worse.- Don't forget to notify which route you are taking, who you will be hiking

with, and when you expect to return.- In an emergency, keep calm.- In the event of an accident, alert the emergency services.- AMBULANCE: 344 112- POLICE: 32 14 48

NOTE: - Compass imprecision in the Nuuk area is about 29°W (2012)- Preserve the natural environment - don't litter - future hikers on the route
