NUTS NOTES Vol. 18 No.3 June 1980 Editor: Tim Lynch-Staunton, Meadowbank, Eydens Avenue, Walton-on-Thamee, Surrey KT12 3 JP. This is the third issue of NUTS NOTES to go on sale to the general public* For the last twenty or so years it has been available to members of the NUTS on a quarterly basis, thanks mainly to the untiring efforts of Andrew Huxtable, who was editor for many years until last year. We hope this issue will be of interest to athletics fans, in particular those who like athletics' statistics, although it will not in future be entirely a statistical newsletter, and will encourage those who compile lists and other data for their own amusement to submit compilations for consideration for inclusion in future issues. T.L-S. BRITISH BEST PERFORMANCES OF ALL-TIME - 10 MILES (ROAD) One of the most frequently contested yet least documented distance events is the 10 miles. So far as I am aware, no one has previously attempted to produce an all- time list for road performances. There are, of course, certain inherent problems. It's an event which, like the marathon, is subject to considerable variation in the severity of courses; and it is sometimes difficult to establish for sure the accuracy of distance for races advertised as being at 10 miles. But there are several very good reasons for establishing a statistical record of the event. First, almost all top-class distance-runners contest it during their career. Second, it brings together trackmen, cross-country runners and marathoners. Third, it has also produced a significant number of performers who have not achieved major recognition in other events. The following list contains more than 100 athletes who have beaten 48 minutes. To the best of my knowledge, all the marks have been achieved over genuine 10-mile courses, and where events have been known to fall short such marks have been excluded. There are bound to be additions and corrections, and these would be welcomed by the compiler at 35 Alderley Road, Hoylake, Wirral, Merseyside, 147 2AT. Note: * indicates performance made during a race over a longer distance, Rose's 47*12 was set during a half-marathon; Hill's 46:50 came in a 20-mile race and his 47:45 en route to a marathon. This is the third issue of NUTS NOTES to go on sale to the general public*For the last twenty or so years it has been available to members of the NUTS on a quarterly basis, thanks mainly to the untiring efforts of Andrew Huxtable, who was editor for many years until last year. T.L-S.

BRITISH BEST PERFORMANCES OF ALL-TIME - 10 MILES (ROAD)

One of the most frequently contested yet least documented distance events is the 10 miles.

Note: * indicates performance made during a race over a longer distance,Rose's 47*12 was set during a half-marathon; Hill's 46:50 came in a 20-mile race and his 47:45 en route to a marathon.

Most Athletes under 4 minutes in same race:7 on 31 Aug 79 at Crystal Palace.

G.B. Athletes have recorded 4'8ub fours' in one year on eleven occasions, with Frank Clement and Steve Ovett achieving the feat in three separate years.

Ovett recorded his 4 in 1979 in the space of 29 days} while Alan Simpson recorded 3 in 8 days in 1965-

Valter Wilkinson spread his 11 over a period of 12 years and was under 4 minutes in seven successive years.

Mike Kearns holds the accolade of being Great Britain's 50th sub four minute miler, and Mike Downes was the World's 300th.

Evidence of the neglect the Mile used to receive in Europe is proved when you find that it was not until 1965 that a Briton bettered four minutes in Europe and the next occasion was in 1971•

In making a comparison one can obviously make almost any base. I have chosen to list 10th, 20th and 50th performances as recorded by the NUTS. I make no apologies for ignoring the sprints and the high hurdles - the combination of manual and automatic times gives a different ratio one year against another.

Observations: most of the running events appear to be an improvement on 1976. At 400m at long last an overall move forward. At 800m significant improvement at the top with stalemate lower down the order.

The 1500m is the reverse; last year was golden at the top and this level haB not been maintained but the lower echelons are better. At 5000m again an overall improvement but as I have written previously this firm base has not thrown up an outstanding leader. The 10Km has an odd middle with polarised betterment. Steeplechase much as it was, similarly low-hurdles.

All the jumping events are either in a rut or going marginally rearwards although it is recognised that in vertical jumping major improvement is difficult to scale because of "fired" bar movements.

The Shot and Discus seem to be going into recession - perhaps understandable as International success at these events would appear to require a commitment of unreasonable proportions. Hammer and Javelin similarly stalemated as is Decathlon. All in all this particular quantification gives no major cause for satisfaction but are there other views?

POT-POURRI

1. 1979 was the first post-war year in which a British men's outdoor field event record was not broken. In fact, excluding the war years 1940-44, one has to go back to 1933 to find a blank year.

P

2. Andy Ripley, apart from being a great rugby player, is a fine 'fun' athlete. Thanks to the Polytechnic Harriers club lists compiled meticulously by David Barrington, I see that his 1979 bests range from 100 metres in 11.4, 400 metres in 50.1, 400 metres hurdles in 54-3 to a marathon in 3:55:58. Also a 10.94Triple Jump and 12.21 Shot.

3* Geoff Capes has to the end of the 1980 indoor season competed in 65 full internationals for Great Britain. He has overtaken Howard Payne's total of 61 and seemB set to beat Mike Bull's record 66.

Geoff has competed in more internationals than, for example, Brendan Foster,Mike McLeod, Steve Ovett, Sebastian Coe, Dave Moorcroft and John Robson combined!

Leslie Cranfield wishes to dispose of a great deal of athletics literature - old copies of "Athletics Weekly" (1962-72), "World Sports", "British Athletics Annual" (1959-71), "International Athletics Annual" (1961-72), various programmes and other items. Please contact him at 27 Cranleigh Road, Feltham, Middx, TW13 4PZ,

MORE STATS

Capes's 21.68 is his 17th British record. This equals the most at one event, record held by Geoff Elliott (P.V.) and Bill Tancred (D.T.). However Elliott's total includes only 6 increases (11 equallings) while Capes has 16 increases, and Tancred 17.

Correction to G.B. Sub 4 minute Milers list on page 5:Both Alan Simpson and Mike Wiggs should appear between Andy Green and Tony Harris.
