What is Nutrition?

What are the 3 Main Components of Our Food?

2. Proteins

3. Fats

1. Carbohydrates

Group 1:Carbohydrates

Carbs are the main source of energy in the human diet.

• They are found primarily in foods derived from plants.

Carbs are found in plants and their seeds. Can you give me an example?

• In human beings they are primarily stored in the liver and muscles but in limited quantities.

Group 2:Proteins

• Proteins compose the structural components of all living organisms) among their other functions.

Can You Name a Few Protein Containing Foods?

Sources include meats, eggs, milk and legumes such as

beans.

Group 3:Fats

Can You Name a Few Fat Containing Foods?

Fat is the preferred form of long term storage for humans.

• Fats are stored in special fat cells called lipocytes a.k.a....

Our Stomachs and Butts!

Unlike carbohydrates the storage space is unlimited!

The human body is a biological machine and like

all machines, it needs fuel to do work like running,

thinking, even reading this!

This fuel comes from our food, primarily from Carbohydrates (short term) and fats (long term)

• We burn this fuel when we use our body. Generally, if we eat more than we burn we gain weight, if we burn more, we lose weight!

A car is a machine. Why doesn't it gain weight?

• Cars don't have the ability to store gasoline! That alone shows us how inferior our technology is to natures.

• If they could take gasoline and change it to a storable form such as fat then cars would get chubby!

• The dietitian can approximate your daily caloric expenditure (energy used) and then adjust your caloric intake (energy taken in via food) which will result in weight loss (the body will pull the extra energy you need from your fat stores)

The Result?
