In 2007, Mr. Issaev staged his very popular ballet “ Chipollino” for Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico. Vladimir Issaev belongs to the Artistic Advisory Council for the Classical Dance Alliance. PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKYCOMPOSER

Born in Kamsko-Votkinsk, the 7th of May 1840, Tchaikovsky was the second eldest of six children. At the age of six he could read French and German and began piano lessons. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1862. Graduating after four years he went on to teach for twelve years at the Moscow Conservatory, where he began to compose. In his first two years there he had already written his first symphony and the opera Voyevoda. In 1868 he met with the famous group of young Russian composers “The Five” - Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. Although he greatly admired them and wrote his second symphony in response to their fervor, he never joined the group. From 1869 to

1875 he wrote three more operas and became music critic for Russkiye Vedomosti in 1872. Tchaikovsky became well regarded in Russia and also in Britain and the United States. In 1885 he moved to a country house in Klin where he lived in virtual isolation and wrote Manfred. 1888 and 1889 brought tours as a conductor to Germany, France and England. After the production of The Sleeping Beauty in 1890, Tchaikovsky went to Florence to work on his opera The Queen of Spades which was produced in St. Petersburg later that year. 1891 brought the very successful tour of the United States and Tchaikovsky’s appearance at the opening of the Music Hall (renamed Carnegie Hall), followed the next year with the premiere of The Nutcracker, commissioned by the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa. Upon completion of the score in the summer of 1892 Tchaikovsky wrote that the music he composed was “infinitely poorer than The Sleeping Beauty” (which he had composed and premiered in 1890). In March of 1892 Tchaikovsky premiered the music for The Nutcracker Ballet Suite before was ballet was even produced. This eight-part concert version of the ballet music was a success. At least six times, the audience demanded immediate encores of specific music selections. Because of the Suite’s instant success, the score was published even before the ballet premiered. On December 18 of 1892 The Nutcracker World Premiere took place at the Maryinsky Theater in St Petersburg, Russia with choreography by Petipa/Ivanov. The first review of the Nutcracker did not look too favorably on what would become the most attended holiday ballet ever produced. In 1893 he received an honorary doctorate of music from Cambridge University. The sixth symphony, having been begun in 1891 but abandoned, was completed in 1893. Tchaikovsky believed it to be his best work. The critics were not too kind. A few days later, November 6, 1893, Tchaikovsky died of cholera. Tchaikovsky raised the status of ballet music to previously unknown distinction. Such a revolution, however, did not happen instantly. In his lifetime his ballet music was considered too symphonic, much as some of today’s critics claim his symphonies are too balletic. Tchaikovsky loved danceable music, particularly that of Mozart who was one of his favorite composers. Tchaikovsky’s music, imbued with its sweeping lyricism, richness, and danceable qualities is a frequent choice of inspiration for choreographers.

THE NUTCRACKER

COMPOSER: PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY

CHOREOGRAPHER: VLADIMIR ISSAEV

SYNOPSIS

FIRST ACT

It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum home. Family and friends gather around the beautifully decorated tree; it’s a night of rejoicing, exchanging gifts, and dancing. The joy is suddenly interrupted when Herr Drosselmeyer enters. He is a strange, but kind old man who brings beautiful life-size toys for Clara and Fritz, which dance at the touch of his wand. Drosselmeyer has another present for Clara: a Nutcracker.

When the party is over and all the guests leave, Clara sneaks down to the living room in her nightgown to take another look at the Nutcracker. The clock strikes midnight and as Clara goes to fetch the Nutcracker, pandemonium breaks loose; toy soldiers come to life along with the mice. A great battle takes place as Clara huddles in her chair. The Mouse King fights with the Nutcracker. Clara saves the Nutcracker by hitting the Mouse King’s head with her shoe. The battle is over and Clara is now transported to the Kingdom of Snow where she meets the Nutcracker, transformed into a prince.

SECOND ACT

After dancing with the King and Queen of Snow and the Snowflakes, Clara and her Prince are taken to the Kingdom of Sweets where they are met by the Dew Drop Fairy and her Cavalier. The celebration begins in their honor, and dances representing Chocolate from Spain, Tea from China, Coffee from Arabia, and Marzipan follow. The Flowers delight them with a waltz and to top it all, the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier honor Clara and her Prince with a beautiful Pas-de-Deux. Afterwards everyone joins in the dancing of a spectacular Coda.
